Title: Hat Trouble
Post by: leewillis92 on September 21, 2008, 09:36:00 PM
Hey everyone.  I plan on hunting with a ball cap I picked up from cabelas this week.  I really like the pattern and shades on it, so I am going to try to stick with it.  The only problem is that by the time I reach full draw, the brim is rubbing against my string and it bugs me a lot.  It was only about ten bucks so it won't be a huge loss if I screw it up, but I want to shorten the brim from the regular brim to a shorter (but still as wide) version.  Thanks a ton everybody, I know this is a dumb question. -Lee

Have you thought about just turning it around when you shoot? I set-up in the shade when I hunt so that's what I do.

Just do like T-Bone, cut a big "V" notch in it!

I had the same hat trouble with every hat I ever tried. I went to a boonie style hat and safty pinned the bill above my right eye. Always out of the way and when I need the bill to keep the sun out of my eyes I just twist the hat around.

this works for me.

I turn my cap around ,or wear a camo bandana, but you could cut the bill down if you could figure out a way to keep it from fraying...

I've got the same problem.  I used to turn it around, but the glare from the sun on my glasses doesn't help any more than the brim.  I just used one of the stitching lines as a guide and kept it flat, then burned the edge with a torch to keep frays to a minimum.

It's not pretty, but no more string/sun issues.

Just turn it backwards and it will work fine.  Ben

I took a knife and cut it down one of the stitch lines.  Then glued strips of cloth all over it to make it a gillie hat.  So far it works when I am shooting. I will be wearing it in less than 2 weeks in the woods.

I just push mine up a little.  If it's cold I have a stocking cap on.

I split the fabric at the seam, Peeled it back, cut the bill to length, then hot melt glued the fabric back and trimmed it.. Since I wear glasses turning around is not an option, Often don't have time to turn it.

Maybe try a Jones style hat with a shorter brim.

I split the fabric at the seam, Peel it back. Then take the cardboard out of the bill. Cut the fabric the size you want. Then sew the fabric back together with no cardboard. If you sew it on a sewing machine with stiches a 1/4" apart it will move out of the way when your strings hits it & is still stiff for sun shading. Been doing it this way for 45 years, works for me.

I shoot with my hat backwards. If not, my string hits my brim, and I cant come to my anchor
