Title: Metal Detector For Arrow Retrieval
Post by: Keuka on September 21, 2008, 08:48:00 PM
Hunting small game in the snow, costs alot of arrows due to the arrow skimming under the snow. Even with judos the arrows seem to skim if the snow is more than just a few inches deep.

Do any of you carry a small metal detector for locating the arrow by the metal point? I'm looking for a small unit to carry in a fanny or day pack.

I've seen the wand type used for locating nails in saw lumber but I have no idea if they have any range. I'm not looking for a big bulky unit.

A guy at one of shoots had one that fit onto a standard arrow insert. Just remove the field tip and screw the arrow onto the detector. Can't for the life of me remember who made it, but there's one out there somewhere.

FWIW: those woodworker nail detectors are only good for a few inches -- maybe a foot.

I use my boy's.  It was $15 in the toys at target.  It is not very big at all.  Never tried it in snow.  Use it in the grass all the time.

The wand type detectors  don't work real well for what you want.  They are used for pin pointing  finds located by a large detector.  I carry my dectector in the truck at all times.  I have found many arrows for archers at shoots.  I like to go to the archery club after the outdoor league season and detect behind targets for arrows.  Usually come out with a handfull and put them on the table in the clubhouse for owners to claim.

EricW, that's the one I was thinking of. I watched the guy use it and it even found his carbon buried in pine duff.

I have one of the Arrecover units and they work pretty good, especialy for alumimum arras....
My yard is Bermuda grass and it sucks up arras pretty quick....
It has definetly paid for it's self....And when friends are over ya can charge $1 a pop for finding there arras....

mike g,
Being from California you most likely never used them in snow but how close do you have to be to get a signal in your yard? I shoot carbons and judos so I'd most likely have to be right on top of the point to get a signal. I didn't know aluminum or non-magnetic metals would give off a signal.

I didn't know they made one that fit an arrow. Have you ever checked it out against the reqular disk type detectors? I have little experience with metal detectors but I've got a bunch of experience looking for arrows under snow and brush.

Thanks to all for the info.
