i am going to wildernesshuntinglodge for my first time.i dont know if i should stalk or use treestand/blind.it will be my first big game hunt with my recurve.any tips or info would be great.
I just went on my first hog hunt at ray hammonds place and it was a blast! We did all stalking and boy it was a rush (even when you miss!)lol. Stands were available but i think they were mostly for deer. Im certainly a hog hunting rookie but if your going to be stalking id suggest wearing some comfortable boots that you can walk quietly in. I'm sure some of the pros will chime in with their tricks.
Forgot to say Good Luck and happy hunting!
Best of luck to ya :archer:
i have shot pigs with my wheel bow rfom tree stands but i realy think i am going to try spot and stalk.
The nose knows. You can get buy with a little noise if they are making noise, if they are standing still dont move or make noise. You can get buy with a little movement as long as they are moving, if they freeze and pic there head up freeze and dont move.
But you CAN NOT beat there nose, if the wind is not in your faver, YOU LOSE
Don't wait for em to hold still, they almost never stop scuffling about and shoving each other around.
Aim small, hit the point of the elbow and you will have a short trail.
Good Hunting!
Shooting game from a tree stand is not hunting(go ahead blast away I can take it)that is called harvesting.
If I had a choice it would be spot & stalk every time even if the odds were against me.
Best of luck & enjoy.
Stalking hogs is much more fun.Shooting from the ground gives you a much better angle and you don't have to worry about the sheild on a big boar like you do from a treestand.Be warned however it is addicting. Some think it hooks you worse than crack does.:)I am a hog junky myself. :bigsmyl:
Have a great time!!! I'm going hog hunting in February!

I'm hunting at Ray's in February. Footwear is a big question I have. Do you reccomend rubber boots for the swamps or leather for all the stalking that we will be doing?
Did you see many hogs?
Thanks, Dave

200 years ago it was simply putting food on the table. If sitting in a tree fed your family, so be it.
Besides, I have not found hogs all that easy, even from a stand.

Thanks for your PM. I might be sending more questions your way.
Dave

He's only saying that because they have no trees in Texas.
It takes an immesurable amount of knowledge, skill and time to properly place a treestand for a big whitetail Anyone who says different doesn't have many bowkills.

I'm just razzing a little, I've spent time in stands and blinds just not my preferred way of hunting.
BTW I'm in Texas and we have trees! You must mean
West Texas...different state.
:D
Hah! I was just testing you. You said you could take it :-)
Had a fella tell me once that tree stands were for sissy`s. He`d hunted for over ten years with a stickbow and never used one...I was impressed till he said he had only killed one deer....RC
