Well this was the third day I've used the same old XX75 for stumpin'; about fifty or sixty shots I suppose. Haven't had to take another one out of the quiver. I'm sayin' that's pretty sturdy by golly. :saywhat: :archer:

Yup same here George. I use the same arrow a lot of times when stumping and never have a problem with it. Very rarely do I bend or break an aluminum arrow.
Me too. I use 2018 legacy. I'm good until I hit a rock. :banghead:
I don't bend or break near as many as I used to. I guess I am getting better at picking stumps, and I use hex heads.
Killdeer
That's because you're not getting much penetration. :biglaugh:
Sorry George, couldn't resist. I don't know why, but I was looking to start trouble from the word go today.
Killy....check out this Hex head. I had this on a short b/h adaptor and this is what happened after hitting an oak stump. The arrow was fine and this is the only time I ever had an issue with this head.

I only shoot aluminum, but I have crumpled a few on hard stumps.
Yikes, George! :scared:
I haven't used an adapter yet. I just loaded up 6 arrows with 160 grain screw-ins, hoping to get out of the house soon. Chiggers need feeding.

Come shoot with me George, a lot has to do with where you are stumping. I have done the test and for me carbons hold up way better. Actually I destroyed 4 aluminums for everyone carbon. Also it has a lot to do with the aluminum a 2219 will hold up way better than a 2013. Shawn
George
I like the wood on that riser.
Sorry, no comment on the stumping... :D
Shawn.....I didn't say they were tougher or as tough as carbon!!!! I said, they are not as fragile as some people would have you believe.
Don't take this thread as anti-carbon....I have some of them myself and use them now and then.
And Shawn...I have shot stumps for many a moon, and our landscape is littered with limestone. I've broken aluminum, wood and carbon on them. This is a thread in support of aluminum and the bad press it has gotten....that should be obvious. It's not anti-anything.
Aluminum is far from fragile, they have a whole lot more +'s than -'s. Great looking bow George.
While I'm not starting or participating in any argements; I followed George's recommendation to start shooting aluminum shafts about 5 months ago.
I only have 6 of the 12 1916's I got in April left. Lost 2 and broke 4. I love my aluminums because the are so easy to tune. They don't hold up too well when hitting reed bar in targets or being shot through sideways by another arrow. Other than that....haven't had any problems! I have to say it was a good call. My accuracy has improved quite a bit over the last 6 months. Don't know if it is the arrows or not, but I'm happy. Just need to order some more from Badger if I can get paypal to work. He does nice work!
Regards All,
-Charlie
What kind of bow is that in the pic George?
no argument here.... i will say that carbons like to mushroom on frozen stump direct hits, but aluminum like to bend when glancing off of the target. I like the precise spine and weight of aluminums...If they could make some heavier carbon arrows in the .600 spine then my search would be over... so for now i shoot woodies , aluminums , and carbons....they all have a place in my quiver.
Looks like a lot of fun, George.
 :archer:
Swagged aluminum is all I shoot now for big game hunting and stumpshooting. 2117's hold up very well even on those "rock" shots. For small game, I use my leftover barrel tapered ash. Those old Bear Metric Magnum X7 arrows were very tough.
Stump Shootin' with a Rubber Blunt Tip will help any arrow last a very long time. I kinda like all three arrow materials. They each have a place in my heart. But you can fix a bent 2016 and you had better break a cracked carbon in half or risk injury with your next shot. Wood is cool and quiet and classic for huntin' but needs to be checked for cracks between shots also.
There I'm Done! :p
... mike ...
I must be doing something pretty wrong then. When xx75s hit anything remotely hard the insert, blunt and all tends to get jammed back into the shaft (cracking the aluminum, etc.).
whatever you are doing wrong, I'm doing the exact same thing! (inserts jammed back into the shaft)
I've never had a problem stump shootin' with aluminium arrows untill.....I end up ricochetting them off a tree.....
THEN, They look more like horse shoes!!!!! :banghead:
I shot a few 2514's from a wheel bow I had and only killed a couple on re=bar leg supports in the targets .or getting cut on a sideways shot from another shooter,IF I could find out which ones work in my present set up I would be buying more of them and not as many woodies,NOT knocking wood or carbon, shot them too,but I am having problems with my arrows and tuning now so I am dissapointed with my set up is all.
David out
I shoot 2018 Legacys and love them. I've done a lot of stumpin' with them and they hold up just fine. I like my woodies and also shoot some carbons but my favorites are the aluminums.(nut)
I shoot 2216 Legacy's and they hold up great. I shoot at fallen trees, ferns, stumps... just about anything. I use judo points and flu-flus when I stump. I rarely take shots longer than 20 yards.
The flu-flus and judos help with arrow recovery on that 1 in 100 shot when I miss the target ;) . Ricochets don't travel far and never get buried.
Also, the judos don't penetrate that deep and they are damn near indestructible. To me they seem easier to pull out because of this.
I recently switched from 2018s to 2216s but even when I shot the lighter arrows I was able to get thru a couple seasons without damaging or losing any.
Since this is all about alum. arrows I'd like to ask a question. What Legacy shaft would you use for a 55lb at 28" recurve with an arrow length of 28" BOP and 145gr BH. I was just a mouse click away from ordering half a dozen but I've got my woodies tuned so well I'm afraid to start over so I canceled the whole order.
On another note... George thats a Bear take down isn't it?
Shawn is right Carbon's save you $$$$$ 58
2018s will probably do the trick but you never know. I shoot a 55#@28" Slammer and I have to use 2216s cut to 29 1/4". They are spined for 65-70# but fly perfectly out of my bow.
I use alum for stumping too, no problems either..
