If yall had a choice of a state you could drive to and hunt public land Whitetails - where would you go - that did not have to wait on a draw.

i would go to alaska
Kentucky
nebraska plenty of public land. Go to nebraska game and parks web site. they have a mapping program that is awesome. Shows where all the public ground is at. Over the counter deer tags. reasonable priced i think. With a deer tag you can go to the western part of the state and take either mulie or whitetale.

That was my plan... Was trying to go there the week before gun season... I could only get off Nov 10-16th (Gun opens the 8th)
Got the call today, my hunting partner couldn't get off at all...
I may still be going, but not sure where...
Was thinking about Nebraska, would be nice to hunt Mule deer or WTs. I think everyone goes to Kansas or Missouri these days, not that I blame them, I would like to go there myself. But figure maybe nebraska is more out of the way.
Have not thought about Kentucky? Friends of mine go to Ohio and Illinois every year. Just would lie to go to more open river bottom country (I think!)
How about North or South Dakota?

I have been hunting Northern Missouri, Eastern Nebraska, and Western Kentucky for the last few years. All 3 states have lots of public land and some really big deer to chase. All 3 have over the counter tags and they are not very expensive. I am headed to N. Missouri next week to hunt a little and scout a lot for the first week of Nov.
If you didn't have to draw, I would definately say Kansas. Their public land is incredible. Hunted there alot when I lived in Wichita.
We don't have any Big deer in Missouri, you might as well go to Nebraska or Kentucky and shoot their deer. LOL
Neb. is a sleeper for sure.
New York. Great hunting on public land and good size bucks and Bear.
NJ we have about 500,000 acres of public hunting land
Stick,
We do not have the big deer here but we surly have some of the biggest blackies around. seen several on the scales at 640 - one of those had to be weighed in pieces so he probably was more than that.
Guess I am looking for a area where one can go and hunt from a hotel or pup tent and just chase decent size deer.
BUT I would love to hunt OPEN country, here if you can see more than 30 yards you are in heaven!! LOL so I like the idea of the nebraska or Kansas.

It is the same in NY. Average shot is probably 20 yds or less in the timber.
DOnt mind close shots LOL need em as clase as I can get em. just would like to be able to see the horizon is all. I bet NY be pretty country as well.

South Ga.MUCH public land in prime river bottoms.Deer and hogs.Gods Country,RC.
Ther are units that can be drawn every year in Kansas you have to do the homework and phone calls they are the not so popular units. But still pleanty of big deer and public land to hunt.
I'd hunt some of the Indian reservations in South Dakota and Nebraska. I've hunted spring gobbler on the Santee Sioux and the Rosebud Reservation and some very impressive whitetails live there, the nice thing they set their own seasons and the hunting pressure is nill

you were kidding, right?
I love Michigan! If your not into trophy's and want to put some deer in the freezer, nearly all of the upper peninsula and most of the northern lower is public hunting land. The SLP has great public land too.
