Title: NC opener?
Post by: J-dog on September 14, 2008, 10:40:00 AM
Anyone do any good? I wish it would have been turkey season I woulda been set! I dont think I could spell the word "deer" though yesterday. Full moon and all, but being wrapped up with turkeys gave me a lesson in stillness! fun to listen to their calls.

Just wondering if anyone did any good.

I hunted the morning but got busted on the way in near my stand. The roads were lined with deer in the dark and that never is a good sign for a morning hunt.I sit out the afternoon and will wait for the little break in heat mid week before going back.

I went to check my game camera and didn't even take my bow because it was so danged hot.  Even moving along slowly in the shaded canopy of trees, I was absolutely soaked from the humidity.  Came home and shot my bow in the back yard and enjoyed myself.
I think all the deer were up the road at the pool hall drinking beer....

The full moon and the heat are going to slow things down for a while, it seems. A couple of weeks from now things might be much better with less moon light and maybe some cooler weather.

I had 7 deer all around me for about 30 minutes, I waited as much as I could on a decent buck, but he never showed up. I finally dropped the string on a good doe, and after a 45 yard recovery I had my first meat of the season. I don't know how to post pictures, but she looked a lot like Mr. Magoo's doe. I will go hunting again tomorrow. Mystical

Jumped 3 or 4 on the road into my property.  All I could see was flags high tailing it outta there.  Guess those were the sentries cause I didn't see another one all morning.  With the full moon I figured it wasn't going to be an action packed morning but seeing as how it was opening day I had to go.  Congrads Mr.Magoo and Mystical on your does!!!

Good job guys ! I hunted good buck sign but all I got was soaked by the  heat and I beleive every mosquito in N.C. bit me . Went back in to the land today to checks my Dads cows for him and saw two very nice new buck rubs right where I walk into my stand . The buck must have done them late last night or early this morning . We'll get him next time out !

Congratulations you two.

Hunting a new area this year and not seeing much sign.
Be glad for a cool front, like everyone else.  :archer:

I saw one small doe this PM but she was out of range.  As hot as it was I would've been scared to shoot her. She might have spoiled before I got the hide off her!  Hey Woodduck...glad to hear you still around!  I thought you might have traded your bows for a surfboard!  HaHa!

I had a good hunt Sat. I saw 2 does and 2 bucks about 7:00am. I was hunting from my ground blind and they were about 10yards away. I am saving this spot for the rut so I didn't drop the string. In the afternoon I hunted from a tree. I had 2 does come in but didn't shoot. I also saw a hawk catch a squirrel and the biggest ground hog I have ever seen.

J-Dog and Magoo,
Where'bouts in NC do y'all live?
I'm in Wilson....hunt private land, but after 2 seasons, still can't figure out a pattern to the deer's movement there.

Tom - I'm in Raleigh.  Are you hunting fields, woods, scrub ...?

Tom,
I am down in Morehead city, on the coast by Atlantic Beach. I hunt Croatan Game land in Pollocksville, bout an hour drive but worth it - hunting stinks in Carteret though we have a TON of game land.

Guess I am wrong but private land should be a piece of cake compared to GL. Magoo is right, need to knowo the terrain. Also go to google earth get an aerial view as well as getting some USGS topos. It helps alot to figure things out about the land you never knew was there.

Hey Jason,
Lots of deer down Coast Guard Rd.   :)

Jason, I just moved from Cape Carteret last year to here in Wilson.  I know the Croatan well, particularly the Great Lake area.  Problem is, once gun season comes in, the deer become completely nocturnal due to dog hunters (and I used to be one of 'em). I can point you to some exact coords. of some good places there, but you may as well give it up after gun season opens.

Magoo, I'm hunting a combination of fields, swamp, 10-yr old cutover, beaver pond...it's paradise for deer..I killed one every single time I went hunting year before last...with my rifle.   :D

There ARE lots of deer on Coast Guard Rd., for sure.

Slayer, I sent you another PM - be sure your Inbox isn't full.

Saw 3 deer Sat. morning while trail hunting. I missed a good doe. Dang it!

Yeah so you know what I mean! I worked EIFD for years. then went to a more southern department. No wI am back on the Island at PKSFD.

I used to sit and watch a big 9 for three years in a row on the canal behind station one. Him with three other bucks. Yep know CG rd very well. People love the deer but scream bloody murder when they eat the shrubs.

I have a dream of hunting OPEN country at some point in my life, getting tired of having to crawl to some of my spots, just to be able to see 15 yards max!!! LOL

Good to see some from around here.

Tom,
Sounds like you're already familiar with the property.  You just need to determine which routes the deer regularly use when moving through the swamp and cut-over, and how they're approaching the fields (you probably need to hunt at least 20 yards inside the treeline where the deer often hold while waiting to come into the field.)

Frankly, the best way to see how they're moving is to keep your eyes open while your on stand (assuming you're in a stand).  If you're not seeing any deer, scout for sign and move your stand around those areas.

Been caught up this week, going tomorrow afternoon. Going to try a ground attack, that is where I do best most time. Slip till I find fresh sign then sit on it till dark. With the cool weather has anyone been seeing anything.
