I arrowed a deer this morning at 35+ yards and quartering away. I was slightly above the animal so the shaft entered high on the left lung then just below center on the right lung. The broadhead passed through but the arrow hung up on the 5 1/2" banana feathers so the deer bounded away with orange fletchings sticking out of his upper chest.
I don't know about the rest of you, but for me, at my skill level, that is a long shot. I was feeling really good, a little cocky, so I let'r fly. Normally I won't shoot at game past 30 and would much prefer -20.
If your curious I was shooting a 50# Red Wing Hunter, a cedar shaft spined at about 68#s with a 160 grain Stos head.
Pics?
Are you having backstrap for supper?
Congratulation Doug! Sounds like a great shot.
Deer - it's what's for dinner. Right?
Pics later Dave. All I had w/me was a cheap throw-away film camera. Back-strap maybe if someone else will cook it, I'm pooped!
Story? Did you get it
Great shooting!!!
Lets see the damages!!!
 , good shooting and I'm with O&U lets see the damages
Awesome  , Need pics and story though...
sweet need to the pics !
Sometimes when your feelin` "really good", "a little cocky", it`s because your INSTINCTS are working. A subtle hint that you CAN do what you must.
Ted Nugent even mentions it is the song "Fred Bear". "I had that feeling, comin over me again...
just like it happened so many times before".
Feels good doesn`t it!
Congrats.
Only you know if it is a good shot to make and it sounds like you made the right choice. Back strap on the grill anyone?
 :archer: :coffee:
You are not living up to your name,LOL

About the only pic I can offer immediately is of the bloody arrow. All I had with me at the kill site is a throw-away film camera that I carry in my fanny pack and it takes a week or so to get the pics back from development.
The buck was standing on the opposite side of a large arroya. I've hunted the area before and knew the deer,(and sometimes elk), liked to graze in the deep grass at the bottom of the arroya. I simply sat motionless at the top and waited for the deer to move in. Not much of a story and nothing special about the deer, just a common young buck. :campfire: :archer:
Well done! Good to see a bloody arrow!
:clapper: :clapper: congrats to you
I don't think I've taken a shot at a deer that long with a even a fireatrm :)
Nice shooting! I can't wait to see the hero pic!

Nicely done-shot and kill!
Where were you hunting at? My wife is from the sheridan area. Hope to be hunting out there next year
Congrats on your deer. :clapper: :clapper: Whitetail or mulie?
Uh....question..
If you "wouldn't normally take that shot", what was abnormal about this specific situation that you DID take that shot?
Do you use a rangefinder? If you would normally shoot to 30 just wondering how you knew it was 35.Maybe that was after the shot? From a stand I doubt if I could have told the difference without one.
Well done! When the instincts take over go with it, that's my standard when deciding to let one go. Sometimes when I draw it isn't there, as I've grown over the years, when that happens I just let the bow down and work on getting my shooting/hunting instincts centered. And when you draw and its there, let her go! 35 yards isn't too far for your equipment
:notworthy:
Biggie, "I was feeling really good, a little cocky, so I let'r fly", to quote my original post. No other explanation, it just felt good so I released.
James, no rangefinder. I'll admit I didn't know the distance for sure until after the kill but it was obviously a longer-than-normal shot.
I shoot at 30 yards at a life size deer target in my back yard. When I'm feeling good, I'll smack the kill-zone regularly but when i'm tuckered or sressed-out, the shots stray.
You gonna change your handle.Good job congrats.Kip
I think he should change his handle -
