Title: "Snakey" limbs on new R/D longbow. Pics added
Post by: Red Dwarf on September 13, 2008, 12:12:00 PM
I have recently bought a new longbow that has a pronounced R/D design.
At brace the upper limb has quite a pronounced "snakiness" to it when viewed along its edge from handle to tip. The lower limb has a similar shape but to a lesser extent.
Is this a common shape with a severe R/D design? This is the 1st "higher end" bow that I have bought and am a little concerned.
I have contacted the bowyer and was told not to worry, it wouldn't affect the shootability or durability.  (http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f74/RedDwarf1/IMG_0001_7.jpg)

I paid, what is for me, quite a lot of money for this bow and think that if I should ever wish to sell it the re-sale value may be affected by the uneven bend in the limbs.
I really would welcome opinions from those with way more archery experience than myself.

I have a hybrid and it has the same type of bend in the limbs when strung.  I've had it over 1&1/2 years with no problems.  A friend has basically the same bow for 2&1/2 years and hasn't had a issue.

Looks like defect in the bow form to me.

I'm no bowyer, but I've read somewhere that tape causes this?  I'm not sure if the forms are taped when glueing up the limbs or tape on the limbs themselves.

Personally, I would make sure the bowyer knows that I'm not happy with it, most will go out of there way to make sure you end up happy.  In my opinion, it will not affect the way the bow shoots...Mike

Most hybrids I've looked have the same profile. Is the curve of the limb consistant when unbraced?

looks like the form is not true or uneven clamp pressure.

None of the radical r/d bows I've bought (or built for tha matter) had that funny bend in the limbs!

It could be intentional (ever see the "multicam" recurve limb?) but it definintely looks like a limb design and taper trait.

Jeremy,

Bill Stewart's Multicam limb design for his recurves and his longbows make the limbs on this bow look like a HH bow.       :scared:        ;)      :)

Below is a pic that shows the silhouette of the Stewart Multicam Recurve Limbs.  Although the longbow limbs are only shown with the backside of the limbs up, the silhouette still has the wrinkled effect like the recurve limbs.
