Title: Forgewood Arrows!
Post by: snag on September 09, 2008, 03:09:00 PM
I just finished these this morning. With 160gr. tips they are 880grs!!! These are truly heavy weight champions! They are 280gr heavier than the carbons I shoot and 300gr. heavier than the other wood arrows I shoot. But out of my cut to center Blacktail recurve 55#@28" they fly good and really pack a punch. At 20yds they drop 1"-2" more than my 600gr arrows.

Very nice David. If you grow tired of those old slow heavy arrows, you know where you can send them, TO ME! LOL.

What exactly are forgewood arrows (compressed yellow/Alaskan cedar?), and who do you obtain your shafts from? Can you get them in the heavier spines, i.e., greater than 100#?

Thanks!

Jeff,

Forgewood was originally compressed POC when Mr. Bill Sweetland was making the best arrow shafts ever made. His process compressed the ceder making it very dense and it had a tapered density, ie was more dense on the point end. Sweetland Forgewoods are very hard to find and when you do you will pay a pretty penny for them, yes they are that good, plus some people collect them. I know of a man in Oregon that probably has a room full of Sweetlands but he is not getting rid of them at any price.

After Sweetland closed, Jack Harrison,if I remember correctly, and some partners bought all of the original Sweetland equipment and moved it to Alaska and for a short time they made and sold Alaskan Forgewood arrows and shafts. They could not find POC that was good enough for the compression process so they used Alaskan Hemlock. These were also great arrows but not as good as original Sweetlands. They are also very hard to find and demand a high price as well.

Thanks! I guy at our trad club in TN had some of the second-generation ones from Alaska - took him a long time to get, but they were impressive in weight and straightness.

Danny's got it right. The last of the Forgewood was Hemlock because that was available. Hey Danny, where in Oregon is there a room full of Forgewoods?! So close I can smell them!!! lol Yeah, I don't blame the man. I wouldn't sell them either. I am going to baby these. I would love to put one through an elk this year though! I think they could do some serious damage.
