Title: Hang your bow, or hold on to it.
Post by: frassettor on September 04, 2008, 05:07:00 PM
Just was wondering how many of you hang your bow up, or hold on to it while  tree stand hunting.

First year with my recurve but just laid the wheel bow across my lap and plan to do the same with the recurve.

Always hold on to the bow.. you never know when that deer is going to come in... I need to be ready.

Both....It depends on the cover I'm hunting. If I'm in tight cover, I hold it because a shot will come quick. When I'm hunting an area where I can see longer distances, I sometimes hang the bow.

I try to hang on to it - especially when still hunting.  It gets embarrassing otherwise.

I'll generally hold it, but hang it to eat or when my hands or arms start to grumble.  It always seems to work better to have the bow in your hand when the critter shows.

I hang it 90% of the time.  I use a very long 3 piece folding hanger.  I hang it right in front of my grip hand.  There is a lot less motion to just picking it off the hanger then to rotating it off my lap.  Even when I'm ground hunting, I tend to use a holder that keeps it up right for minimal movement...Doc

In tree stands, I rig mine so the tip of the bow rests on the front of the stand and the bow leans back vertically between my legs in a sitting position.  My hand may or may not be on the bow, but I can grab it and draw with very little movement.

The only time it leaves my hands is when I'm eating or on a mother nature call....

I always hang mine with an arrow knocked. I always felt like I was increasing the mass of motion anytime I moved my hands even slightly. I don't even reach for it until I've made the decision to shoot or not.
Plus, my hands get cold!

Kinda like Biggie, I hang it with arrow nocked, I have dropped more than one bow! with my hands in my pockets or have a little spell where I may doze off..  I keep it hung where the motion is minimal

Back in my compound days I used to hang my bow and one time a WCO came along and gave me a warning for screwing my bow hook into the tree (I hunt public land). Since then I hold onto my bow when on stand, LOL.

I tie the bottom of my pants up and use the open end of the knot loop to rest my bow on. Bow is pretty much in shooting position and it is easier than grabbing it off of the side of the tree.

Hang mine with arrow nocked- using a kwik lok.  One too many arrows have fallen to the ground prior to the kwik lok.  I grab the bow when sound, or sight tells me it might be time.....

mixed bag of both, but all of my stands have bow holders on them.  I usually set the holder on the foot platform so the bow ends up right next to my hand.

I agree with Biggie (kinda scary   :scared:  )  I always keep my hands in my pockets unless I'm picking my nose or something.  Sure I've missed out on a few shooting opportunities, but another one will come along eventually.  While squirrel hunting I hang onto it at all times, never know when you're going to have to fight them off.

Hey Jeff Doc Tippit, does that long folding hanger thing ever get in the way of your upper limb when you shoot?  I've seen them in stores and thought about getting a few of them.

Most of the time while on stand I hang my bow from an E Z Hanger. I some times doze off on stand and the thought of dropping my bow out of a tree stand makes me shiver.
