I am setting up a 40 year old Hoyt PMH for season this year. The shelf is flat so I put on a "pro-rest". I was thinking how many use an elevated arrow rest.
I prefer off the shelf, makes the "pointing" a little more natural to me.
I use both, depending on the bow I'm using.
When in the field I primarily shoot off of the shelf, when I pull out a target bow I primarily use a rest.
elevated rest on my hunting bows, more forgiving of release then off the shelf, after you shoot off one for a while your brain adjusts for the extra elevation over your hand, plus if I want to shoot vanes in the rain no problems.I use my own homemade leather rests.
Dont see anything wrong with either, have shot both, but I just like of the shelf much better. Personal preference, all it is.

What about building up the shelf?
Shelf.
Shelf for me , keeps my "pointing " hand close to the arrow .
Shelf, I agree with brittman...definately keeps the hand closer to the arrow.
I stick to the KISS system Keep it simple stupid. Had one to many rest fail in the woods to use them on the bows that feed the family. I shoot off a bare shelf had to many rug type rests come off or snag a fletching.
Shelf. I have on my recurve but a leather shoe lace under the bottom and back to raise it a tad.
mine are built up 1/4" or so with moleskin....
I use a simple Bear Weatherest on my Quinn Stallion.
Thank you for all the votes. Please keep them coming. I get surprised at Tradgang everyday. Really suprised that so many use a rest.

Feather rest for my Bears, off the shelf with the Tip.
Off the shelf on mine.

Now that I am a full time engineering student my time to hunt will be very limited. I normally stay home when it rains due to poor flight with my feathers when wet, bu tin the past I have had more time to hunt. But this year I am setting up my bow with a Bear stick on rest and my arrows with vanes for an "all weather" type of hunting set up.
I've been involved with this discussion for the last 55 yrs. The overall cancensus that I know of is the shelf is the fastest way to get on target, best for hunters for sure. Although target archers of the past used the elevated rest quite a bit, today I think The majority of Trad archers use the shelf. Biff
Switched to an elevated rest this year and prolly wont change for a long time love it and shoot better then ever plus I can shoot vanes
I'm surprised by the numbers.. Thanks to all who posted and voted in the poll. You can still vote until 9/11.
good luck to all this season.

I'm shooting off the shelf after shooting off a weatherrest for years.
I cant my bow when I shoot. I've had an arrow end up resting on the top of the weatherrest against the riser. Ended up wounding a nice buck when the arrow flew off wildly because I didn't look down to make sure the arrow was on the "finger." Made me sick to see that deer running off with that arrow in it's rump. Won't happen again shooting off the shelf.
