For the past few years I have been shooting White Birch woodies and absolutely love them. Now the time has come that I need to get some more shafts, and I can't seem to find anybody that carries White Birch anymore. I know Cedar is THE standard for woodies, but they break way to easy for me and I like the slightly heavier weight of the Birch.
So, my question to everyone here is, what woods that are currently available from vendors would closely resemble the White Birch qualities of durability and weight?
From what little information I have been able to find about different woods for arrows, I think my best choices would be Douglas Fir or Popular and possibly Sitka Spruce. However, I think I have read that Sitka Spruce is usually lighter than cedar or the same weight, so that probably wouldn't be what I am looking for. Oh, and I really don't want anything that would be "super heavy" either, like laminated Birch, etc.
Thanks in advance for your knowledge.
Have you checked with Allegheny Mountain Arrow Woods? I know they used to make a non-laminated birch shaft. Might be yellow birch though. Regardless, a good shaft. Sitka Spruce is generally lighter than cedar, which would make it quite a bit lighter than birch. Doug fir makes a good, tough arrow. Just a little lighter than birch, but not much.
I have went to Doug fir this year for the first time. So far I like them a lot. They are just a little heavier than cedar, but they don't smell good when you break one.
Orion, you're right they do mention yellow Birch on their website. Can you or anyone tell me what the difference is between yellow birch and white birch?
Ted at Raptor has lots of different arrows
Actually Ted is where I purchased the white birch shafts I currently have from, but he only has Sitka, Douglas Fur, and Ash shafts listed on his website now. Are you saying he has a larger selection than what is listed on his website? If so I will definitely be droping him a line.
I would do that, JC, and ask him if he can match your target weight in Doug. fir or Sitka spruce.
