I've had on stage personal instruction from Alex Guthro and can do a pretty good cow call. I tested it in Alaska and it works. If you're going after moose, his cassette tape set is worth the money.
well im thinking of going back to quebec next september before i get to old to do it . Anybody want to go ?

I've hunted Alaska/Yukon moose in Alaska now for 30 years and have done plenty of calling (and actually some that worked!). While Mr. Gouthro clearly states that the Canadian moose reacts quite differently to calling than his larger cousin (the Alaska/Yukon) each can respond to calling if done correctly and used at the right time. His DVD series is a must-have for anyone doing a DIY hunt for moose. Again, most of the techniques that he teaches are not useful for hunting the larger A/Y moose. But the calls he teaches the novice to use are the best representation of what moose actually sound like that I have heard on a man-made tape.

Ya! The moose have been calling me since reading about Larry and T.J. at Teslin River in TBM a few years ago! I have a coffee can and string moose call!

The string is run through a hole in the bottom center of the can. With string wet, hold the string firmly between thumb and forefinger and pull slowly down the string. Sounds like a cow moose. The string should be a thickish cotton string. Maybe 1/4 in.?
I have looked at a lot of bulls in Ontario thanks to the skills of a good friend of mine who learned it from Alex Gouthro.

I have an old cassette tape or two on calling, if I can find them I'll mail them to you, just pm me your address. The cow & bull calls are easily made with your mouth. Some area's, the bulls respond more readily to bull calls, other area's they respond better to cow calls. A homemade or store-bought megaphone can help get your calls out there further, a guy up here makes one called a bull magnet, maybe you can find one online. An old scapula is good for banging and raking on trees to sound like a bull doing just that, but they do break easy if you do it right. I have a half of an empty plastic quart oil can, with a 2 1/2 foot long stick taped into the narrow/pour end for making antler scraping noises. Its a lot of fun !

That's exactly what we used in Ontario two years ago. You can also run your fingers about an inch quickly to immitate a grunt.
I jus tuse my hands cupped so I can send the sound further. I find I can do a much better job than a sting/can combo, but I've been calling for a number of years so I have a few miles.
I just use my voice with or without a funnel depending on if I have one with me or not. The funnel helps carry the sounds. It is not hard to learn either bull or cow sounds. The key is to use them right. Bulls don't just charge in all of the time. Many will sneak in to see. Last 2 years I called two bulls in each year that I knew of. You will call in some that you never see or hear but find sign later that they were there.
I also use two piece of 1/4 ply to mimick the clashing of antlers. Works very well.
A few years back and moose season had just closed I took my 5 year old grandson out. I had spend about 1/2 showing him how to call. Well within 10 minutes he had a bull coming in. So it isn't rocket science!
Alex Gouthro is the man! His DVD's have everything you'll need and then some. Great stuff!

I also purchased the Alex Gouthro DVD set.
Had a chance to put some of the skills to use last season. I didn't get any shots but I did see 3 bulls. I had problems closing the gap and could only bring them in to 100 - 70 yards. I think this just comes down to experience and learning which is part of the fun.
