Title: Chanse to hunt whitetail in Maryland!
Post by: HAWGDOG on August 29, 2008, 12:30:00 AM
I have to admit, don't know much about Maryland but Cal Ripkin, and those turtles @ the univesity   :)  I have a chance to deer hunt up (ya'lls) way this fall/early winter. I know hunting is hunting, but what should I expect.
What time of year does the temp drop, what type of hunting conditions am I getting myself into.
the only reason I ask is that i know that it will be a last minute decision. Thats why I would like to get a little heads up. Put it this way, I am going w/ a bunch of gun hunters, that said that they shold be able to acomendate to a bowhunter.  :scared:  not to be  :notworthy:

If you are hunting with gun hunters,I assume you mean rifle season.I believe that starts Nov.29.Weather can be very cold, especially in the Western mountains.Hunting pressure is very high and most deer know it is opening day before the sun comes up.There is such a commotion of cars on the road, pulling into woods roads, flashlights going through the woods before daylight. It's tough that time of year with a bow.

And if you hunt Dorchester County for Sika deer wear hip boots and take plenty of mosquito repellent.

For the first time, a deer hunt will be staged in the land surrounding Loch Raven Reservoir.  Baltimore owns the property and Public Works says too many deer are eating too much vegetation.

This hunt could claim hundreds of deer.

The dam that holds back Loch Raven Reservoir helps provide water for two million Marylanders.  The land also provides an excellent home for deer.

Baltimore City, which owns the land, says deer are munching through critical vegetation, which could lead to erosion and sediment buildup, reducing the reservoir's capacity.  So hunters will be brought in and, for the first time, hundreds of deer will be culled at Loch Raven.

Just this past winter, more than 60 deer were killed on the Goucher College campus (located inside the Baltimore Beltway) to bring the herd size down.  Even though new trees are protected at Loch Raven, managers say they can't plant enough to keep up with the deer.

Bow hunting will start next month and run through January.

HAWG, we could probably give you more specifics if you gave us a bit more.(for example-"a bunch of gun hunters"-black powder? firearms? early or late BP?) What part of the state, and when.

Also, if you don't like the weather in Maryland.....give it a minute.

Hello!!!!  The state is indeed diverse in topography.  I live twenty five miles north Of Allegeny County and just an hour from Garrett County....It's mountainous up here.
