Title: Draw weight for kids
Post by: Dogboy900 on August 28, 2008, 09:18:00 PM
Hi just wondering what sort of draw weight you think might be suitable for a 6 year old girl?

We don't have access to a large shop with a range so we cant try out a few to see what suits, but would love to get my G/f's little sister a bow

I guess less is better but would like some idea if you guys have any experience with kids bows.

Thanks

Talk to Mike at Maddog, a sponsor here. He can fix you up with a little info.

This was helpful when I asked about it a little bit ago.

Bought my 6 year old a Mahaska longbow 48" his size. weight ranges from 15# to 21# depending on draw. He is eight now and getting all 21#s and loving it. It wasn't too much at first and he loves it.

I asked this question once because I couldn't remember what my kids shot but now I have grandchildren.  Someone recommended 1# per inch draw. ie 15# at 15" etc.

1 pound per inch is too much for some kids. I'd recommend about 10# for most 6 year olds, unless they have shot since they were 3. Most will draw between 12 and 16 inches at that age. Go light if in doubt. There's always another kid waiting for a bow when she outgrows it.
