I made my first cord wrapped grip with some braided nylon, and think it's very functional after getting caught out in a down pour. Can someone give me some pointers on how to start and terminate the cord in one of these? Mine looks like crap. Thanks.

Marty,
I would think about like you serve a string. Lay the tag end along the grip and wrap over it for several wraps then pull tight and continue wrapping, when ya get close to the end lay a loop with some more material and wrap over for several loops then put the tag end through the loop and pull the tag ends of the loop until it snugs up to the wrap with the wrap tag end then pull with pliers or somesuch until you pull the tag end under and out of the wrap. Cut the remains off and you are done. Clear as mud?

I've tried that Danny, and can't get it to work as smoothly as it's supposed to. I too use that method for wrapping fishing rod guides and serving strings. Maybe I should shop for some better line. I'd like to try leather lace as well. Thanks buddy.

try hemp string or art-sinew.

Apex I appley a little string wax to the tag end just before pulling it under the wrappings to lock the wrap in place..The string wax will lube the tag a little and helps prevent fricition....bowdoc

On the handle wraps I'm using now I used hemp cord from Wally World like Sal said. I usually set the wrap with Massey finish when done. On my yew bow I made to hunt with this year I used only bear fat to seal the bow and left the wrap unsealed. The smaller diameter of the hemp allows it to lay flatter where you tuck the tag end. Pat

I use a rubber wrap from a bicycle tire innertube. Weather impervious, comfortable, non-slip, ! Just wrap it on and tie it off.

Forgot to say, I cut the tube into stripes. 1/2 inch.

Strips not stripes. sorry.

I put contact cement on the handle where I want the cord to go and let it get tacky. I then serve the cord like the serving on a string. The sticky handle holds the cord enough so that you can get it good and tight. Where you start the cord you can feather it a bit where you will wrap over it and you will not know it is even there. I have never had one come undone and they look neat. Coach

If you need to get an even better grip or change shape of handle, you could try some of the different wrap ties like on para cord knife handles. You can use any diameter cord. I think the para cord wraps give the best grip on a knife...Doc

Here's one I did with leather lace, on my Pronghorn. Just wrap tight, and use a little Barge cement to keep the wraps in place. On the lasst two or three, leave them loose and run the tag end underneath, then just tighten them up. (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v103/scattershot/IMGP1942.jpg)
I have done a few with hemp or jute twine that turned out well, using the same method. Good luck!

Bottle opener in the spine? Now THAT'S a functional knife!
