I passed by a bunch of Osage (boisarc) today maybe could get permission to cut some contact me if intrested.I also picked up some of the fruit to plant does anyone know if I have to break it up and dry and wait to plant in the winter and any other tips for it to survive/Thanks Kip
I'd be willing help figure out the best way to plant it here in oregon
I have started seedlings by breaking open the fruit and drying the seeds then planting them in a coffee can. They seem to be fairly easy to start.
I am waiting for the county agent to give me some tips on how and when to plant.Art I can send you some seeds when I have them ready will let you know.Kip
Kip, I've left the fruit in a bucket with a little water over the winter. Up north it freezes and the mixture is much in the spring. Planted that and thin out the shoots once they come up...may not work so well in in warm South :) Doc
Il take some apples
Dang I got bo'dark growin all over my place ,we call it horse apple trees .If you can cut it and not ruin your saw you doin good.Got 4 staves drying out now ,should be done in a couple more years.
Kip, T-bell and I would be interested in doing a little harvesting if you get permission on those trees. Email T-Bell, he has grown some from seed.
You can count me in on helping to harvest as well. I could use a couple staves.
O.K. guys I will look into it now .It looks like a new subdivision going up next to it so maybe they will be cutting them out along the hiway anyway.I will try to find the owners easy acess just off the interstate.I saw plenty trees along the road for about a quarter mile.Kip
Keep some kerosene or WD-40 on hand to hose down the bar every so often. It keeps the resins dissolved.
Do what Tippit says with the apples. Cows will eat the apples and "plant" them for you too. Plant them where they'll have to fight straight upward for sunlight. Keep the trunks pruned up as they grow. My buddy has a fencerow of young trees. I pruned up the first 200 feet or so, and those trees look great, compared to the tangled mess in the rest of the row. Wear heavy clothing and heavy leather gloves when you work on them and you'll cut down on the bleeding a bit.
THANKS KIP
somewhat in the area. I'm a young fella. If you need a hand hauling wood or something I can try to make it.
I plant my osage by putting some used horse stall shavings in a 55gal plastic drum (cut in 1/2), adding the whole "orange" and letting it sit where it can get rain, or be able to water it every so often. When spring comes you have a bunch of sprouts, to re plant. Have also used Doc Tippits way, both work.
Kip let me know if Gustav knocks down any of the osage and you need a hand splitting it.
I might be interested in a stave or two as well.
