Title: Tuning Confusion - Does this sound right?
Post by: oxnam on August 20, 2008, 01:56:00 PM
Recently purchased a new Centaur Achery Chimera (reflex deflex).  Close to center cut.  60" 65lbs @ 28" and I draw to right at 28".  I bought Gold Tip Traditionals 7595 cut to 30" with the thought of using heavy tips.  Shot it through paper last night with 200gr tips and I was tearing nearly 3" left (feather tearing left of the point).  100gr tip put me just about correct.  Does this seem really odd?

I haven't done any bareshafting because I was hoping I wouldn't have to strip any arrows to get it tuned.

I also kept tearing an inch nock high.  I adjusted the nock down and never did get rid of it.  Any other idea of what may cause this?
thanks,
oxnam

"Does this seem really odd" Not really. If you take about 1/2 to 3/4 inch off the arrow you might be in the ballpark for the heaver point. You might want to go a 1/4 inch at a time, carbons react quick to cutting as apposed to point weight

Arrow nock high in the target can indicate a string nock that is too low (and the arrow bounces off of it) or too high (and the arrow doesn't have time to straighten at close range).  If lowering the nock point didn't work, try raising it.

I put a square on the string and the nock point is currently 3/4" high (to the bottom edge of the nock point.)  I thought that seemed really high but maybe it needs to go higher.  Definately not too low.

The nock high tear could be the noc slipping on the string when you draw the bow.The main thing is what do the arrows look like in flight? If they look good you can build your sideplate out a 1/16th or less and get the 200gn points tuned if that is your wish.jmo

Derrick, your arrows are spined too weak right now. You need to either drop point weight or cut your arrows shorter. Just do one and test it. Go atleast a 1/2" to and inch to start with.
Now if you hold your bow at an angle or cant it when you are shooting through the paper, then a weak arrow spine would also read as a nock point problem because of having the bow canted. Make sure that when you paper tune, you have the bow vertical so that you get a proper read from the paper. Once you get the spine right, you will find that by adjusting the nock point, you will not have the paper tearing up.

thanks, Jim
