Title: Squirrel call...distress type..
Post by: TradPaul on August 19, 2008, 05:43:00 PM
I lost my distress squirrel whistle, which comprised of a 4-1 call but i took the whistle piece out and used it by itself. So i was watching "bowhunters of tradgang" and noticed that the hunters on there that were hunting squirrels, used an aluminum call on a necklace. Does anyone know where i can get one like it, or the same thing?? i had seen something called Mr.Squirrel whistle, but am unsure about it. Thanks again for any advice.

Oh yeah they work, before i lost mine in a creek, i had called in( actually called one to me) grey squirrel and there were several about 40yards down that were going crazy in their tree's, i could have stalked the others but didnt feel like chasing the arrows that i missed with  :D  .

Anyone have any more info?

Calling squirrels is like calling anything else. Some days they work great, some days just so-so, and some days they ignore you altogether. The two times I use them is 1) during the early seasons when there are still young squirrels in the woods and 2) during mid day when things are usually slow and I want to stir things up. The squealer calls, such as the Haydel, is the only type of call that I've been able to actually draw squirrels to me with any consistency at all. Feeding and barking calls at best sometimes get squirrels to sound off so you can locate them.

That's how my grandpa used to call in all the grandkids.

Blow the sqirrel whistle and scuffle the leaves or pull on a branch.  It will make the sqirrels crazy.  Works like a charm for me.  I have several although I like the silent approach and only use them for fun.

Thanks guys for the advice, it seems that the only one on a necklace is the Mr. Squirrel whistle. So i'll be getting that one. Thanks again.

The squirrel whistle call works. I've called many of them down the tree for a shot. I've also had hawks come to it which is pretty neat.

I called in a gray fox with mine once - that was cooler than a squirrel any day.     :D

Never heard a squirrel whistle call but for fox squirrels here in Michigan I make a fox squirrel bark by filling one cheek with air and tapping on it with a knuckle. By cheek I am refering to my the one on my face!  ;)

I used one while leaning against a tree and had a squirrel run up me to get on the tree. Guess my mossy oak was working that day.
