That's the dangerous part... avoid close spaces, pup tents, truck cabs, etc.

I'm sittin here thinking about tomorrow morning. The truck is packed, fueled and standing ready...I even washed and waxed her.

I'll be down the road about 8 a.m. central with a stop at the VA before heading west for Wyoming.

With luck I'll make Kansas City by 2 p.m., Lincoln, Neb. about 6 and parts west until around 10 p.m.
Tuesday morning I'll hit the road in the early a.m. and should make Vance's place by mid afternoon.

Vance and I will be talking Dick Easter's ear off as the sun sets over the western mountains.

Who know's, we may find a jackrabbit to harass that evening.

Will try in my usual way try to bring a little of the hunt to my brothers here at TradGang. There's gonna be segments with "Rabbitman", then another when Terry hooks up with us for deer and antelope and yet another with our own Rob DiStefano....Rob's first hunting trip to the mountains and he's got an antelope permit in his pocket.

I'll be on my own quest for a buck and doe antelope. I've got until the end of September.

See ya in a couple of days.

Hey guys!! This is Charlie on Vance's login.

The hunting is developing slowly so far, but we are ready to rock this morning.

Dick Easter and his lovely wife Penny got away yesterday morning.
Hormoan had rolled in the night before and in a word it's been "busy".

I barely got out of the truck two days ago and had loaded back up in Vance's truck for a run to Salt Lake City.
Made my total windshield time for the day about 20 hours.... severely kicking my butt!!

After Rabbitman left we took care of a few things around the ranch and loaded up for a trip to Jackson Hole to shuttle a ranch truck back home.

We are seeing good numbers of antelope on the ranch and surronding area.

In our spare minutes we've stayed glued to our binoculars and spotting scope.

Since water doesn't play a big role in the antelope hunting in this country, we've been watching for patterns of movement to develope.

Acting on the limited information we've accumulated at this time, Brent (Hormoan) and I set up a Double Bull last night at a fence crossing.

The antelope this morning are bedded high in the sage hills surronding the ranch and we're waiting for them to get on their feet before we head for the blind.

We'll prepare ourselves with copious quantities of hot black coffee and lots of bull shooting until it's go time.

Lots of plans in the works and we'll be moving around the country in our free time seeing what we can find.

Put out the positive vibes for us Gang. It's gonna be a whirlwind for a while.

Hunt Sharp,

Charlie

P.S.  I don't have my glasses at the desk this morning so please excuse typo's and such.

Here's how it breaks down for today....

Brent suited up this morning when a band of antelope meandered into a strip of willows we've come to know well.

The stalk was over almost as soon as it started when an unseen antelope buck blew the whistle...
they make a very nasal wheezing snort when alarmed.

All of Brent's intended targets retreated casually from the willows.

He finally made it up to the house around noon, sweaty, but happy for the adventure.

While Vance took care of ranch business, Brent and I headed up country to look around a little.
We did a little stump shooting at around the 9000 ft. elevation just for the heck of it. We killed a bunch of stumps and twigs.

Take it easy on me now. I got interupted in my report by a bow and arrow emergency.

Seems our bastion of security was being assaulted by the ever subversive beaver tribe.

Vance has been battling these musky rodents for as long as he's been on the ranch. The latest incursion involves a road, the creek and a very agressive dam building program on the part of bucky and family.

Brent and I were the primary shooters as we eased into position near the dam just at sunset.
Brent went left and I went right.

Within moments a dark form appeared, cutting a wide V through the glassy black water... we were losing light fast.

This was happening on Brent's side and soon the dull thump of his bow broke the stillness. In an instant the arrow sliced through the water just above his target.
A loud tail slap and a whoosh and the beaver disappeared. Miss!

A second beaver surfaced and Brent's bow thumped again. Once again a close miss on a moving target in near darkness.

As I eased around a willow bush on the far side of the water a large brown lump appeared on the bank ahead.

The big rodent was quartering to me and I sent a Simmons Interceptor into his shoulder. I must have gotten every vital organ in him. It was over very quickly.

Seconds later the water lay still all around and the darkness closed in on us. It was all over.

One of the most difficult tasks I ever assaulted in the field was the skinning of a beaver.
It's like skinning Jello.

Yeah Killy, they are fun to put a knife to.

Late afternoon found us once again manning the glass trying to read patterns into what we were witnessing.

Several antelope were within bow range of the blind we put up last night and we'll probably set it tomorrow.

We also found another habitual spot where we intend to put a blind in the morning.

At the moment we are wrapping ourselves around a toddy and looking forward to a sound nights sleep.

A new thread will be popping up momentarily. Vance has it in the works as I type.

The last couple of days have had lots of chores to do, a little chauffer work, and moments of excitement with both small and large game.

My camera is currently on vacation somewhere and I'm patiently waiting for it to come back.... I have no idea where it went.

We'll get the photo thing going shortly.
