I bought a used KOM shirt from a guy over the internet. well i got it today and man does it SMELL BAD! i really don't want to wash it but i don't see that i have a choice. anyone got any tips on what to use when washing and how? thank you in advance, Yote
Cold water with a quality non scent detergent, say the Hunter Specialty stuff. I've owned KOM, washed it a number of times. Actually, with washing the fabric gets tighter which inturn keeps the wind out better and keeps you warmer IMO.
Just use the delicate cycle and hand stretch it when its done. Be sure to air dry. If you've got a place to hang it outside to dry, leave it there for a few days. Nothing better for removing odors. I used to hang it up in one of my trees, far enough up I didn't worry about someone grabbing it when leaving it out for a few days.
thanks, sounds like great advice.
SMELL BAD??? You may have a great cover scent or a fantastic odor to attract that monster buck.
However, I'm a Filson fan and they recommend dry cleaning which removes foul odors and modern techniques do not leave those dry cleaning smells of days past.
Yep, dry cleaning will certainly work. I've also used woolite and cold water. In addition to the hand stretching, might also be a good idea to block it while it dries.
The folks at KOM will tell you cold water and baking soda, delicate cycle, then block. Works.
thanks everybody! just talked to KOM and they said dead downwind laundry detergent on gentle or delicate cycle cold water ONLY and stretch after removing from washing machine and let hang dry. they were very helpful and very nice.
Huntryx is correct: cold water & baking soda. Works quite well. According to the firm that I purchased my KOM gear from, washing in detergent will remove the lanolin. Dry cleaning??? Man, those harsh chemicals just cannot be good for wool.
If the smell is that bad, suggest soaking the garment in cold water-baking soda over night, then resume the wash cycle.
