Title: Good payment types for buying bows???
Post by: toyrecurves on August 14, 2008, 11:43:00 PM
Is there anyway to sort of protect yourself from getting your money stolen when buying off from a forum? I just had a buddy get ripped off for $450 on a bow (not on this forum though). Tips and insights would be great.

Using Pay Pal could work. But ultimately it's a crap shoot.
I am a custom knife maker and I have had good luck sending knives to people and accepting a cashiers check or money order...But then again I'm the one providing the product not ripping off a potential customer for his or her money.

Thats a bummer. I've been to scared to buy off the forums because of all the bad stories of people coming on the site, rippin off a few guys and disappearing. On the other hand there are some very reputable people here on Trad Gang that are eager to give us a GOOD name. Hang around and get to know before you buy, maybe even try the sponsors list first. I have'nt heard a negative thing about any of em! Several have used bows if thats what you are hunting for!
Ive bought from: 3 rivers, the nocking pt,Mikes archery leather,Ron laclairs archery shoppe,Byron fergusons productions,The wensel bros,Traditional bowyer jack harrison, sorry if I left someone out, theres a couple a more. All of them are top notch people to do business.-Greg

I only buy from tragangers and I use paypal (check  or MO if I know the person). foolproof.
PS: if you are not familiar with the person's handle, check his/her recent posts, to make sure he/she didn't register on Tgang just to sell an item

Yup, do some research like Alex.B says.

Shoot, I've bought and sold close to 30 bows this year!!  :)   I've yet to be burned when buying a bow.  Was close once, but got that worked out (not on this board).  Doing a little research (post search) on the seller if you don't recognize is a smart idea.

Good people have nothing to hide.  Ask plenty questions and the seller should give you the answers.
I almost got burned on the auction site *bay.  I finally recieved the bow after 25 days.  It's really a crap shoot at times.  Sorry to hear about your friend getting taken.

just buy from the ones that have established reputations that post a lot all over the particular forum.  If you can get full names and addresses you can cross reference them on white pages to make sure their information is legit and decrease your margin of error.  People with shady info are not to be dealt with.  Ask around too to verify someones credibility, just do it tactfully.  Get a phone number and call them too.  None of this is a sure thing but the cheaters out their will usually have shady information, not a lot of forum history, be hesitant to give out phone numbers, and in general you will just get a bad feeling about them.

I dont want to totally jump to conclusions here but look at their member number too.  The ones in it for a quick rip will usually have a high one.

It is all about basic homework. Check the address, his/her handle, posts. And ask for more info. Check them out on the auction site, and ask about other Boards, check them out there too. Sure it is about trust; but only after verification!  :saywhat:
