Folks,
I was just offered a job in Shippingport, PA, and I am looking for contacts who might live in that area (Beaver county??) to tie into for trad archery. Any clubs? Any hunting groups that would take a newbie into the fold? I could also use some help finding resources for housing!
The plant where I'll be working is in Shippingport, and being a nuclear facility, I have to be within 30-45 min. travel time to the facilty.
I saw a highway sign that said it was adopted by UBP members to keep it clean, so I know archers are about. How about Trad Archers???
I need a place to live where I can shoot my bow, hang my deer etc. I'd like to find something rather rural, to RENT for a year. Then consider buying.
Due to allergies, I can't handle anyplace that has recently had critters or old carpet etc. I'd love to hear from guys from that area who might be able to plug me into their network of friends, church members, or club members that might know of a place to rent.
I start 9/15. I'll be in the area either the last week in August or the first in Sept. Anyone with contacts or ideas, send me a PM and I'll take it from there.
I really appreciate any/all suggestions for developing some hunting and shooting contacts...and any help finding housing..
I'd love to find some trad buds to shoot with!
Thanks,
Doc Nock
Nothing to offer you except prayers and I'll definitely do that.
Thanks, Allan. That'll work. Tis what got me the offer in the first place...God incidence! :)
We have a trad club in Beaver County, there is a good trad shop in Butler County (about a 1/2 hour away) we shoot league at in the winter and spring. There are a lot of deer and a lot 3-d shoots.
I live in Cranberry, just on the Butler Co. side of the County line.
Shoot me an email and I can send you some links and contact info for when you get in town.
brianmejia@zoominternet.net
I spend some time for work right next to shippingport in Midland. But I live way over east of there. I believe Bmjia shoots at the same place in butler co. Other than that place, I'm not real familiar with things out that way.
Thanks, Guys. BMejia, sent you a email.
Rybo, thanks too. Once I'm settled, it be fun to get hooked up with a couple of you fellas!
Guy named Ted is down that way...works in Pitt... not sure where he lives, but be fun to meet new folks. Just need a roof first! :)
Be careful of those beavers Doc 8^). I'll keep prayers active for you my friend. Hope to see you at one of the GPSH events.
I live in Beaver County, Fombell. Which is about as rural as it gets, and about 30 minutes from Shippingport. There is a small Trad. Club right off of Rt. 68 between Rochester and Zelienople. I can't remember the name of the Trad. Club portion but it is part of the Beaver Valley Archers. If you are looking to stay rural, it shouldn't be that hard. If you need any other information shoot me a PM.
glad to see ya doing well Doc, good things come to good people and you are very deserving!!
Nuclear, eh? I'm between Butler and Pittsburgh. There are many serious trad guys around here. Allegheny Archer's south of Butler on Route 8 is your store.
www.all-archers.com/ (http://www.all-archers.com/)
Shoot a league night and you will make many trad contacts, and even some fly-fishing (think Erie Steelhead).
Thanks, guys!
George, I'm not too old to drag some of my traps out to see if I can snatch me up one of them beavers in beaver county! :) Make some gas $$ to get over to Mann's Choice, eh? :)
Dereck, sent you a note.
Ken, thanks, bud. It sure feels good... never too old to start over! :)
Scott, thanks for the link. I'll be happy to meet as many of you folks in the area and sling some shafts soon as I find a place to settle in and set up housekeeping!
Doc there are plenty of clubs up around there. I would also recommend going to the Beaver Valley Archers. There are a couple trad guys up there that are part of the PBS including Rod Bear and Mike Ruperto who are great guys to shoot with.
Doc glad to see yer movin west! You'll be fine in all aspects of trad life in that area.
Congrats on the new gig too!!!
Lemme know if ya need any help with anything ok??
Thanks, Greg... I got introduced to Rod by email from one of his friends...hope to hear back from him...
Dale, shot you a note.
Trying to follow up on all the invites here by email...so thanks to one and all.
I'm psyched!
Good luck with the move! I am not real far, maybe an hour away. I know there are some nice summer 3-D shoots in that area:
Stickbenders (http://www.geocities.com/beavervalleyarchers/Stickbenders.html)
Marked the link in favorites, Coop!
This is going to be so exciting getting to renew a few old friendships from UBP and Trad Shoots, and make new ones and learn all that great country out there...
Gotta find me a place to live first...but that will come! :)
Thanks, Coop!
Doc,
It's good to see you are finally moving to the left side of the state. Problem is you are going to the wrong side of the mountain. Dale lives over there too. Somerset Co is where all the real manly archers live. Coop's riding the fence since he lives on top.
We should be bumping into each other a little more often at some of the shoots. This winter Strictly Sticks starts their monthly shoots. I hope to see you there.
Good luck, bud! And congrats on the new job, I know you've been looking awhile.
Dave
Doc,
I grew up in the Beaver Valley, New Brighton to be specific. I remember when they were building Shippingport. Wow, am I old! :scared: The Beaver Valley Archers is a top rate club. The hunting is very good and there seems to be an abundance of housing in about any price range. I truly regret having ever left there. Here are some links that you could possibly use:

Good luck! :archer:
David,
Sent you a PM. Looking forward to getting together once I've got a base out there! Kinda neat to be learning new places and meeting old friends and making new ones! :)
LLKNP, another "Jimmy Stewart"---already know one from here on "Gang!"
Those were some great links..especially the newspaper. I've been getting some "heads up" on specific areas, and only had a chance to bookmark the paper's rental items, but that will be a great help!
Thanks so much!
I've already gotten the BVA link in other posts here and have been emailing guys like crazy about hooking up. Once I have a place, and a contact # etc, that will be much easier!
So what's keepin ya in TX? :) Pretty cool country down there for hunting and fishing too, though!
I live about 15 minutes from the plant in WV and could try to help you with living arrangements either here in WV or just across the line in Hookstown or Georgetown, both areas very rural. pm me.
MI,
Sent you a PM...thanks! :)
Sure thing man. I am happy to help :) .
Doc check yer pm's
Got it, Dale. Thanks! Very kind words :)
A quick note to say thanks to the many responders to this post.
I've met and made contact with a bunch of good folks out there and am excited to get moved and settled and start building some relationships with fellow trad guys and gals!
I got to see the BVA club. Very nice. I met Mike, Joe and Paul's Dad, Dan while there. I've talked to Rod a few times, so to each of you, my deepest gratitude for the help, advice, suggestions and to those of you I met while there, thanks for your generous allowance of time to help me get my bearings.
I'll be living up in Beaver County out on Barkley Hill Road, so hopefully, as I get settled, I will find ways to meet up with more folks and get to shoot!
thanks again!
Welcome and don't beleive a word Rod tells you!
LOL, he is a great guy.
We've talked a few times, but he was working the days I was there... so we couldn't hook up.
Looking forward to meeting him for sure!
I live in Butler Co. Right off of 422 between route 8 and Kittanning. We have a great outdoor shooting club about a mile and a half from my house. Its called Oneida Bow Hunters. We got a good bit of Trad shooters at the club.
If you feel like making the trip every tuesday night, shoot me a PM and we'll get you here. Its a blast.
Allegheny Archers is going to be the store you are looking for. Chris and Claude are good people.
Hey doc nock, I'm about an hour from where you will be. Beaver Valley Archers will be real close to you. They have a great club and it is Archery only club. I'll pm you the e-mail of an officer for their club. Roy
Dave - Your buddy Ted here. Chris and Claude are good friends of mine. Give me a ring when your ready and I'll take you up to the shop . . . given our phone coversations, I think you are going to like Allegheny Archers a lot . . . our kind of people for sure.
Matt,
A goodfriend here grew up in Kittaning... I had friends in Ziely some years back... nice country.
Roy, I'm sure we'll hook up through Bob or whatever..thanks for the PM's.
Ted, You coming up to help me move in? :) :) Ah...yeah...you'll be on assignment for sure! :knothead:
Thanks guys. We'll get things squared away once I got myself settled and can find my clothes and stuff! :goldtooth:
No problem on the move - just give me a ring and I'll do what I can. I have A LOT of travel in September, but I'll help out however I can.
(gotta get the travel out of the way before the season starts).
Brian...small world. Where are you in Cranberry? I live of Powell/Klein Roads in Woodbine plan. Nice to know there are other trad guys nearby.
Doc, email me if I can help in any way.
Brent Barclay
bbarclay@nauticom.net
Ephram . . . there are a lot of us in the area. If you want to meet some more, you gotta check out Allegheny Archers if you haven't already. Just take the turnpike over to the Beaver Valley exit and take route 8 north for just over 10 miles. Probably a half hour trip from Cranberry and the shop is awesome.
Ted, I'll let you know when I'm moving and if you can run up...neat..if'n not, I understand.
BRent, sent you a note.
I can't wait to get settled so I can start to enjoy living out there and meeting good folks!
Course, there is that pesky part of starting a new JOB! :bigsmyl:
I was so excited about the job, but the house location and trips to find a place kinda overshadowed it...hopefully, that comes back into focus quickly!
Thanks, guys!
Man, you guys are making me homesick...
Left Latrobe nearly 25 years ago when I was 16 but man what an impact that area had on me and the people were great. 25 years of Los Angeles, San Bernardino and Orange County later; I got burned out of the big city people and moved my family to a small town near Lake Tahoe area (NV side) for the small town feel but boy do I miss the green mountains and deer population.
Doc, blessings on your move and settling-in.
Quinn
Well, thanks, Quinn. That is so nice. Home is where we make it I guess. I'll miss people, but not the area here. Maybe the rugged Susquehanna river cliff's and such, but not so much. New places to learn and live... :)
Ephram,
Sending you a PM. I live in Highland Village, less than a mile from you...
Brian
Man, I never realized there were so many TG'ers in the Pittsburgh area. Once Doc gets settled in, we ought arrange a shoot of some sort.
Should we have a Doc shoot??? :bigsmyl:
Wednesday Caste- tell me about yerself please?
David & Brian...replied to each of you.
Ted,
Yep, been to Allegheny Archers and have met Stew & Chris before...great guys and great shop/range. Still have never gotten over there to shoot though (work & a 2 yr. old daughter and all) but would like to soon. Of course that may have to wait 'til after bow season as I will be hunting every free moment I get. I really wanted to take the selfbow class they had last winter but was out of town with work. If you guys do arrange a meeting with everyone to shoot, please announce it here. I would certainly like to meet everyone!
Take care!
Brent
I think they are startin' up another self bow class shortly. They also do leagues . . . fun place to hang out.
I live real close so its easy for me, but I hear ya' on the work and daughter front. I've got 5 and 2 year olds - it makes it tough. The 5 year old sometimes comes with and launches some arrows down range.
Not to beat a dead horse, but a quick note of thanks to all who replied and offered ideas.
Things have a funny way about them in life. Turns out that 11 days before the movers showed up, I get a call. Yesterday AM, actually, from the corporate head of our downline.
She informed me that the corporate entities decided that they had to restructure, reorganize and were not going to fill the position afterall.
I won't go into any detail here. I did post a prayer thread and am finding ways to "cope" with all this even though I've paid out for a place to live and invested otherwise for this move, etc.
Suffice it here to say that I so appreciate all the replies, offers to join clubs and meet new trad archers! That would have been great! Beaver County is a really super place to live...for an outdoorsman.
At least a bunch of you came outa the woodwork so you can identify each other. :) Have a go at it and shoot one for me, willya? :)
Thanks for all the replies and kindnesses.
Oh my goodness, that is terrible news. I am very sorry to hear this DocNock.
I'll keep my ears open for anything else I hear of. You may find something interesting on the job board at siop.org.
I'll also look into some of the Exec Assmnt stuff we talked about to see if I can find any work for you there while you are looking.
I feel quite bad for you - they sure put you in a bad position. That simply stinks.
