I just got an invite to hunt waterfowl with trad gear. Any tips on wing shooting or targets to use for warming up? This is going to be a fun hunt!
Hey Rick, I rigged up an old trap machine to throw softballs. I added spring preload to the arm and a trip wire to the trigger. It can be set from straightaway to crossing shots and I just walk into the wire to set it off. It is good practice for leading(guessing) and getting the shot off in time.
If this seems like something you (or other Tradgangers) would like to know more about, I will answer any questions or post pics.(pics could take a couple of days).
Good luck and have fun. Expect a lot of near misses.
3 rivers has a throwing disk, you can hand throw.
Good luck,
F-Manny
I've heard those 4" cut Gobbler Guillotines on flu-flu's are great for waterfowl hunting with a bow. The only thing that turned me off about them was the blade thickness, they're a little flimsy. This last spring Magnus released some turkey heads called the Bullheads, and they're AWESOME! All the cut area of the GG's, but with a far stronger blade system (3 blades).
I'd go with the 125's. Have fun! Definately sounds like a great time.
And bring a few extra arrows. They sink. At least mine do, they are weighted carbon. Wood with light heads may float, I don't know.
I use 6 fletch and snuffers. drops them cold.
aluminum float. Sneak up on ducks and geese in creeks, jump shoot them. Its a hoot.
sorry about the triple post here...
If you are hunting geese from ground blinds, there ain't much leading to it. they lock their wings at 15 yards and you got em.
Jump shootin them....I recommend the throwing disk.
Yeah jump shooting is a hoot! It seems a lot of times puddle ducks will rise almost straight up to about treetop level then just kind of hang there before leveling out to leave. That's when I take the shot!
15 yards at a Goose is definitely doable, I zap marmots at 15-20 on a fairly regular basis, a goose is bigger. Jump shooting puddle ducks sounds like a great idea too.I don't have the experience or equipment too hunt them using calls/decoys.(The guy I'm hunting with dose)
Thanks for the advice I'm really excited about this.
