Title: Hunt Pack
Post by: Billy on August 05, 2008, 11:09:00 PM
Okay, I now there have been bunches of similar threads, but...

3 day hunt; in IL/IN/OH south of
Columbus/Indy/Champaign...mid 50's day and upper 30's at night.
You get one day pack and one other pack.
You'll be tent camping in a state park with facilities but no shower.
What and how do you pack to be comfy and prepared?

I imagine I could get it done with a badlands 2200, and be comfortable. Course I am known for packing light, not needing much. I guess it depends on how you are gonna define comfortable.

If it is a State park, I am probably car camping so I just take my day pack that pretty much goes on every hunt with me.  In it are first aid and field dressing items.  Extra clothes, survival (really just comfort) gear, and food and water in quantities suitable for the length of the day hunt.

In my suitcase/duffle back at the car, I have a change of clothes for every day, sleeping and camp clothes, wet wipes and meds/first aid stuff.

You already packing?  :)

Not packing, yet...  :goldtooth:
I have seen some very small "survival" kits. And, got to wondering how hunters minimize their pack loads.
Since the October hunt is coming,I used it...

Yeah, if your car camping, doesn't really matter except for your day pack.  And the Badlands 2200 looked really nice...but if you are just packing in some warm clothes, snacks and water to your deer stand a 1/2 mile from the truck, the Cabela's Whitetail pack I just bought is a better buy.  If you are elk hunting in the mountains and wearing the pack all day, the Badlands looks like an awesome pack.

I do appreciate the pack recommendations, keep them coming too!
I am wondering WHAT would you pack...and do you have a packing system to find things?

swedish steel, survival blanket, 4 MREs meals ready to eat ARMY Surplus break them down out of there boxes to save room and get rid of the stuff you wouldnt eat or use, 1 role crushed down toilet paper in plastic bag, eatting utensils on an ring like a key chain i p39 army style can opener, canned vegtables that dont have a plastic liner in the can so they can be cooke in a fire. use the lid as a handle. you can use a can with a plastic liner it just takes longer and you should probably boil it in water to heat it up. dried meat or jerky, nuts high protein and fat for cold wheather you use more calories when its colder,2 knives 1 hip 1pocket,  -0 and up sleeping bag, good tent, maybe a multi tool,"small" compass, flash light and extra batteries preferably a led light to save energy and smaller batteries, camelback if you have one or a cantine kit the one that also turns into a small bowl thats metal like in the old war movies, sleeping mat,  wool layers for clothing you can get wet all day long and still be warm.  are you camping at tar hallow or at wayne national. give me a hallor if you want someone to hunt with in ohio. Thats all i can think of im not sure how much itll weigh but im also not sure how afr from your vehicle your camping and if you plan on staying in the woods. give me a holla if you want to with more details about your hunts i may be able to help further.  Have a SAFE trip and happy hunting.

that's the idea celticknot...
that's a way of doing it,I picked up a Ripcord hydration pack w/bladder...it is amazing how much it will hold.
I've got my extra string, gut glove and string kit, knife, sharpener, extra blunts,mini-mag/extra lite and batteries, folding bow square, spare feathers, fletch tape, extra nocks, hard candy/jerky,extra damascus,....still have the main compartment and the area behind the two pockets to put things in.
I've been looking at the alcohol stoves from
-mini-bull designs-it can be ordered with a cozy,a cup, a wind shield...looks to be about the size of a supersize cup...

If you get good sunlight a solar shower works very well and if it is still too cool hot water can be added from the camp stove. Unscented baby wipes are works well for TP and for daily clean up. They also work well around the cooking area too. A small bottle of alcohol based waterless hand sanitizer is nice to have also. You can make up a simple survival pack with a few inexpensive items from discount and drug stores. Waterproof matches, magnesium fire stick, compass, water purifying tabs, a small plastic drop cloth and parachute cord, bandages and antibacterial ointment, needle and thread all of which will fit in a very small waterproof container.
For snacks I have found Kashi granola bars are almost all real food as compared with others that have too much salt and sugar.  Pat

like i said Meals ready to eat (MRE) they come with there own heating pack and they can be torn apart to keep only what you need. Plus they are fairly reasonable and have a looooooonng shelf life incase you dont use them this season, or have left overs. You can pick them up at most army -navy surplus stores.

Use non-coated nylon stuff sacks inside your pack for organizing gear.
