Hi All,
I just finished a refurbish job on an "old and beaten" Ben Pearson Mustang recurve.
This one was not treated well over the years and I thought I’ll give it a try to give it a “second life”. I have added new tips to the limbs. The original Mustang does not have them, but I like it better this way. The results speak for themselves.
Some pictures have a different format, can't change that (yet)

Very nice work , looks great :0)

Looks better than new. Beautiful job. One of a kind I'm sure. What did you use for your "snake skins"?
-
You have inspired me, I may do this with an old "Black Bear" I have!
-
It's a snake skin pattern printed on a linen or fabric strip and I got it from Rudderbows.
When applying (thin) epoxy glue it comes out very nice. I used it already on several bows that I refurbished.

I have a bow like that , cool!!!!!!!!!!

Congrats on a Great Job

What grit(s) sandpaper did you use for the sanding? I've allways been worried about sanding thru the glass.

Very,Very nice work
What did you use for the spray on finish??

That is very nice looking.
Cajun, it's not easy to sand through glass, it's tough stuff. At least that has been my experience.

Cajun,
Depends on how the condition of the original finish is. In this case I had to use 40 grit first to get it all off as the original finish was damaged and came off at various spots. This was not clear in the pictures. I took really good care sanding the limbs with 40 grit without "eating" the glass. (normally I start with 100 grit)
Then I used 100 grit to sand it evenly. Then I glued the snake skins, tips and overlays and sanded the tips and overlays with 100 grit after shaping them. Then I used a heavy duty scouring pad from Scotch 3M for polishing the surface of the bow grip and limbs. You can use steelwool as well for the job, but my experience is that the metal color rubbs off onto the light surfaces.
This gave already a nice "shine" on the entire bow.
Ensure to wear a goggle and a mouth/nose protective mask as the glass fibre dust is nasty stuff!
Guru,
I sprayed the bow 3 times with a clear lacquer from an automotive shop (can). This is a very durable and strong coating, at least that's my experience. I can spray 3 bows with one can.
Thanks guys for the positive replies.

Great job! The bow looks like a Super high priced custom bow now!!

What would you guys estimate for a fair selling price for this refurbished bow?
Would it be re-saleable in the US?
