Deer are about 18, I'm guessing elk at 24 to 26?

shovel, add ten inches to that.  35 inches is about average for 4+ YO bull.

Bulls range from 78-95 centimeters in chest height, with an average of 88 (30.7-37.4 inches, with an average of 34.65). Cows range from 77-94 centimeters, with an average of 83 (30.3-37 inches, with an average of 32.7). Shoulder height for bulls was about 150 centimeters (59 inches) with a known maximum of 162 centimeters (64 inches); for cows, shoulder height was about 135 centimeters (53 inches).

joebuck,

I resized a picture of a bull I got from the RMEF, printed it out on my 36 inch plotter I have in my office and them glued the whole picture to plywood.  Then I cut out the vitals and replaced them with ethofoam.  Made for a very realistic target I thought.  Top of the withers is 60 inches.

I'd do like Steertalker and not add the vitals. You won't see them on a real elk. Try to keep it as real as possible.     Pat

I also took the same approach as Steertalker (For the record - he did a more elegant job than I did). When I put in the organs - I marked them lightly - so I couldn't see them when shooting - but could see them when I pulled arrows from the target. By the way - I did the same with the shoulder/leg bones - now when I pull an arrow I can see heart/lung hits as well those where I hit the bones.

Brett, Nice job on a full size target. I need to build one to practice on right away, I'm sure it would help on range estimating cause their not the same size as whitetails!  Ben
