Ok guys ROOKIE ALERT!!!!!With $350 buckaroosss!!! Will you guys help out so i dont make a stupid mistake and tell me what to buy thats good. :knothead:
$350 should get you a decent set-up and there are many members in here that can give ya a hand. Take a look in the classifides. I'll pm you if I see something that fits the bill.
I agree, keep an eye on the classifieds, many a deal can be had.
I would check out the sponsors page here :) Lots of great stuff there. As far as a back quiver I would check out Mikes archery leather.
Have fun shopping :campfire:
Ken
OH Yeah! plenty of money to get started. I set up my latest convert for $300 and still had a little extra that I spent at 3-Rivers on string wax and silencers.
Rob
SLOW down there Sir, What type of bow are you lookin' for? Longbow? Recurve? Have you ever shot a Trad Bow? It takes alot more than a bow and a quiver full of arrows to hunting.
Where are you in N Alabama? Sipsey River Archery is in Arley.John is a sponsor and usually has a lot of used bows.If you aren't too far you should go by and try some different bows to see what you like.
That's not a bad deal on the Red Wing if it is in good shape and the limbs are straight and it's long enough for your draw. There is lots of info we don't have and the arrows may or may not work for you.Bows and arrows are not a one size fitts all kind of thing.
There is a shoot at Tannehill this weekend Sat and Sun. Probably lots of bows you could try if you can make it.
Hey Clark i live in Decatur where are you located?
I got a GFA (G. Fred Asbel)quiver I'm not gonna use.
Steve
oyea thats waaaay more that i had when I first started, I think I spent about 140 dollars, on a bow, 1 dozen arrows and 6 arrow side quiver
ebaz auctions-not a bad budget!

There are some questions here that need to be answered first, especially have you ever shot Trad?
Have you ever shot a bow?
Its great to have the desire to shoot traditional, but do you have the dedication?
Its going to take alot of shooting to get good enough for this year.
I'm just trying to let you know whats ahead.
Just my 2 cents.

Hate to think that with a classic recurve like the Red Wing Hunter in your hands that you feel like you need something decent... History has proven your old Red Wing is one of the best.. Get to know her before you cut her down like that,,
SirRobin77, Sipsey River is in Arley, Al. not far from Decatur. They will be at the Tannehill traditional shoot this weekend in Birmingham.
He has many used bows that start at $100, some for less and he takes trad bows in on trade too. John has the experience to help you get the right setup for you. The right spined arrow is very important to good arrow flight.
Come on out Sat or Sun and you can try out any bow he has on the practice range til you find what's right for you.
Bunch-a-nay sayers....find yourself a decent bow (redwing is a decent one) buy you some arrows that are spined for your bow and have F-U-N. Contrary to some trad archery isn't rocket science, but rather a very fun hobby. If you get good enough to hit a basketball at 20 yards your good enough to hunt.
This is supposed to be about fun. I really think its the man behind the bow as opposed to how much you pay for a bow. Mike
OK OK OK MAN!! I opened up a can of worms!!
1. I have shot trad before but just a little with a long bow when i was 16 or so, have i hunted trad before no i have not.
2. I do not own the Red WIng Hunter yet I was saying i found one for $155 so i was not cutting it down in anyway. How can i talk bad about any bow I KNOW NOTHING thats why im here and asking questions.
3. I would love to go this weekend but the reatail monster prevents me from weekend functions 99% of the time.Ill call Sipsey River Archery and talk with him .THANKS!
wow there is a indoor range in decatur not sure where though prob on the beltline. Go there and see if you can shoot some of the bows there. Sipsey has alot of good bows i shot a 40# browning recurve go with one of theirs and it will be good. if you visit there they are great people and will help you tremendously.
i used to work at matthews industries in decatur. i am goin to college at UAH this fall maybe you can get in touch and we can shoot some.
SirRobin77
I live in Haleyville, not too far from you.I'll be at Tannehill this weekend but shoot me a PM sometime.
Here are some questions that might help.
How long is your draw? If you don't know than how tall are you? Some bows are too short for realy long draws. You need to balance bow length with your draw length and your style of hunting.
Were you shooting a compound before and what weight was it? I've known guys that shot 70# compounds that started with a 45# trad bow and it was a little too much to begin with but most folks can handle 45 lbs ok.Sometimes it is better to start with a takedown with two sets of limbs, one light to learn ,and one heavier to hunt.
The best thing would be to shoot a lot of different bows and pick something you realy like, even if you had to save another $100 to get it.You might find something even less that you like more. The important thing is to try something to see if it fits you.
Do you like recurves, longbows, does it matter if the bow has wood or metal riser?
Hey CD that sounds great!! Holler at me.
The indoor range is on 6th ave SE in the old Sears building which is now Wiley's.
I just talk to John at Sipsey River Archery he was leaving for some tounament this weekend. John used to be the Sears store manager right before i was hired.I had a couple people that new him tell me about his shop but i didnt know exactly where it was.Im gonna check him out Monday.

Matt,
Please forgive my fellow Tradgangers if they sounded like they were jumping on you. Many of us are very protective of this obsession of ours. The sad fact is that hunting in general is under attack. Bowhunting is even more demonized and trad bowhunting is the "worst" according to the uninformed. My friends were concerned that you were planning to buy a bow and some arrows and go wound a deer. All of us are different in how quickly we develop our form and accuracy with a barebow. It took me a full year of practice before I felt confident of placing an arrow where it needed to be each and every time and that was under perfect conditions. I refused to hunt until I had that degree of confidence. It took me two years after that to get a shot opportunity that I was comfortable with but that's another story. Once you get your bow and start practicing you will soon learn whether or not you will be ready to hunt by opening day this season. In the mean time, welcome to the "Gang"! There's a wealth of information available on here.

SirRobin77, Sorry, hit the wrong key...just want to say "good luck" on your new journey. this is very addicting, but saitisfying habit, also RH Clark, i am from Russellville,Al...maybe we could meet and shoot sometime. i don't know too many folks close to here that shoot trad. pm me if you get the chance...Campbel
Hey John
I understand the concerns that you all have because they are concerns that are mine as well.I have the up most respect for animals and nature.I would never in a 100 years take a shot at a deer if i thought for one second i might wound the animal and not make a humane kill. For me its not about taking a deer home every time i go hunting, its much bigger than that.
Will i be ready to take a deer at 40 yards with my recurve by Oct. 13th....no.Will i be sitting in my blind come Oct. 13th waiting for a buck to stroll within 15 yards so i can harvest him?You bet your
whitetail i will!!
Thanks for the help guys
Matt
