Title: Where the rivercane grows....
Post by: b.glass on July 27, 2008, 10:32:00 AM
Where is that anyway? I would like to harvest my own this year but we don't seem to have any. As I type this, I'm thinking, "Have I really tried looking around here very much?" I need to do that. It's hard to believe we don't have some, somewhere around here.
But since I've started this, if you know of any around central Indiana please let me know.

I'm not sure if it grows in your area or not. I live  near the Gulf Coast; and river cane grows all over the SE in wet areas, especially near creeks and rivers. According to the USDA, it does occur in Indiana. Here's a link to the plant profile.

Good rivercane grows in southern Illinois. There should be some in southern Indiana.

If ya make it down here to the lowcountry, there's plenty to harvest.

Thanks everyone! Just went for a drive and didn't see any. I guess I wasn't sure what to look for before the article in the latest Primitive Archer so I thought I should make sure and take a look around a little. I thought I was seeing some in Michigan and Ohio as we were driving in that area the first couple of weeks of July. But if you say there is none in Michigan, One Eye, maybe I still don't know what I'm looking for! I have a small patch of some kind of grass in my yard that I planted. It sends off a shoot with nodes but the leaves don't come off the shoot. Thought that would make good arrows but haven't tried it yet and my son and I just about killed it two springs ago by letting it burn to much. My husband always burns it down after the winter. There are leaves this year but no shoots.
