Title: Anybody shoot at night?
Post by: Rusty in Fla. on July 19, 2008, 12:06:00 PM
When I got home from work last night about 10:30  my son was all enthused and wanted to shoot some. We took our bows outside and turned on the flood lights shooting for a bout 30 minutes. I noticed I seem to be shooting better than usual with much tighter groups. Several years ago I also won a poachers round they shot at night. I considered the win at the poachers shoot luck but after last night I was wondering if anyone else seems to shoot at night and if they've noticed a difference in the results?

I've been to several rendezvous where a "night shoot" on one of the courses has become very popular.

However, it's not popular with me since I tend to break or lose too many arrows.

I have been shooting every evening about dusk to when I can't even see anymore. It's great pratice for when that big buck comes slipping end first thing in the morning or dusk when hunting season gets here. Plus it's really hot outside right now so it's the best time of the day to pratice. I use to shoot inside my hay barn at night with lights turned on nice 25 yard lighted inside range.

Night shoots always seem to go better just as night shoots with a handgun, you are much more focused on the target and not noticing things with your peripheal vision around the target. If you really want to have some fun, Hang a glow stick on the target and try to shoot beside it to make it bounce to the side...That is what I do for kicks at night...

I shoot in the dark anytime my shooting starts to slip.  It really forces you to pick a spot and concentrate.

One shoot I used to go to had a night shoot they called a "coon shoot." It was shot in only natural light with no flashlights allowed except to recover arrows. The "targets" were mini light sticks pushed long ways into the foam backer. All there was to shoot was a pin point of light. Even at that you'd be surprised at how many times those light sticks had to be replaced. The biggest problem under those conditions is judging the distance. It does give new meaning to the term instinctive archery.

Yep, I shoot almost every night after the family goes to bed.  Turn the porch light on and let em fly.  Its fun and the neighbors always look at me funny and one time the cops showed up b/c someone thought I was a suspicious person creeping around in the dark.

I think its easier to focus at night b/c the only thing you see is the target. All the surrounding landscapes is well, in the dark, out of focus.

Yes. especially now that it's summer. Just too darn hot and buggy to shoot during the day around here. Unfortunately my shooting isn't any better in the dark like some have experienced.

When I started my journey with the bow and arrow many moons ago, I shot at paper plates til it was to dark to see. At dusk, when only the paper plate was visible, my groups tightened up. I've also shot at dime size pieces of paper no more than 3 feet away in the dark with only the light coming from street lights several houses away. Amazing how many shots were hitting or touching the paper.

I like to practice at birthday candles after dark. Forces you to concentrate. Can be tough on feathers if you get lucky or good.Like to shoot against my wheely buddies at night.  Kind of evens the playing field a little.

I've done some coon shoots at some of clubs.I have also set a candle in front of my target and try to shoot the flame out in complete darkness,it's alot of fun.But set the candle out there far enough not to catch the feathers on fire when your arrows are in the target.
