This morning while cruising craigslist, I came across a guy who was selling 2 Bear Alaskans for garage sale prices. I called and made arrangements to go look at them over lunch. Here's what I found.

Not bad, right?
What wasn't listed in the add was the fact that he did this to "camouflage" the bow.

That's a Sharpy permanent marker folks.....
OOOOH permanent marker. Is it possible to remove it with 0000 steel wool? Thats almost as bad as seeing holes drilled into them to install sites. Man that make me cring.
A little WD-40 will take it off with some elbow grease!
I had a bow with the same treatment...a poor man's camo job you might say....I sanded the whole thing down with 150 grit and then 180 grit sand paper and then 220 grit. Re finished with minwax spar poly and it looks like a new bow.
I should just be just on the finish. Try de-natured alcohol applied/scrubbed with 0000 steel wool. And then re-finish.
Fingernail polish remover and 0000 steel wool should do the trick.
looks like we all have the same idea at once!!
ahhh, but there is a better answer! How's this for 5 minutes work and NO elbow grease? :saywhat:

Brent,
Did you buy it? Looks like with a little TLC and some elbow grease followed by your choice of finish you got yourself a new toy.
NEVER MIND... what did you do to get it lookin like that?
What are the specs? good job by the way
Now all you need is a good hunting hat!
AK.
im going to make me some poor mans ASAT with a sharpie this year
There is stuff I have called "Dirty Word Remover" that is a clear gel in a squeeze bottle that takes permanent marker RIGHT off. The only exception is if it is on for a long time or is on something that it can penetrate easily.
Dave, I've never heard of that stuff. My biggest concern was not hurting the fiberglass, which the stuff I used didn't. I was shooting this bow this morning and it's solid as a rock. Someone on here turned me on to it for removing spray paint from bows and it's worked wonderfully. I NEVER pass up a yard sale bow anymore. They all get cleaned up and most end up on the trade blankets at shoots to help pay for my addiction. LOL
Ok, Brent, spill the beans.... What is this magic "stuff" of which you speak? :saywhat: :D
"goo be gone extreme" works good on stuff like that too...
Sorry, I was going to finish this earlier and got tied up with work. This is the stuff.

The trick is to keep it wet and not let it evaporate for 5 minutes or so. Then lightly scrub with 0000 steel wool and whola! :D
Great job on cleaning it up!! :notworthy: :clapper:
I love takin an old ratty bow and makin it purty again :D Good Job!!
Beautiful...those old Alaskans are great shooting bows. At the time they were considered entry level and rather cheap.
