Title: target points
Post by: hunt,trap,fish on July 16, 2008, 10:38:00 AM
I made some arraws, and i bought german brass points for them, but they all pulled off. so how can i make target points that will work good in my 3d target? i have 11/32 shafts.

The German brass points are either screw on or glue on.  I'm assuming you have the latter and that you're using wood arrows.  Before mounting, scratch up the inside of the points with a sharp nail or piece of steel.  Then use hot melt glue as normal. Be sure your wood tapers aren't full of paint or other finish.  Raw wood is best, and if you use a sander to cut your tapers, use fairly heavy grit paper, like 50 or 60 or so.  That will leave the wood rough for better adhesion of the hot melt.

Having a point that is larger in diameter than the shaft is a real problem with foam targets. The arrow goes into the target just fine but the foam then expands around the larger tip and grabs it. You might try changing to the next smaller diameter point or at least filing a bevel on the rear edge where it meets the shaft.

Good advice above. If you have a 5/16" and 1/4" thread tap you can use these two taps to make threads inside the point itself. Remember, the brass/steel is the weak link in the bond here. Works great and you can forget about losing points in the future if you use the hot melt as was mentioned.-ART B
