Well, I'll find out Friday the 18th if I drew a tag for Iowa. Been doing the preference point thing for the last 2 years and this was our third year when we applied in May. Harvested 20 plus deer with a bow here in Michigan and all but one were taken within 15 miles of home. This will be my one and only out of State hunt and I can't wait! Talking to the outfitter a couple of weeks ago and it sounds like they didn't get hit too hard with the flooding in Zone 5. Went through the "flood of the century" here in central Michigan in September of 1986, 17" of rain in 24 hours, so I hope and pray all is well with the folks in Iowa.
Absolutly huge bucks in Iowa. If I ever go on another "trophy" deer hunt it will be in Iowa.
Let us know if the draw works out for you.
Good Luck.

Plan is to hunt the Albia area if we draw.
I've been checking 3 different ways since June 18 when "somebody" told me they were posting the draw. I know I am going to draw because I had 3 points going into it, but I really want to see it in black and white!
I have lived in Iowa for 9 years and haven't seen a big buck yet.

I have 2 points going and in for Area 6. Does that mean I am almost certain to draw? I almost hope I just pull a point this year again since my fall just got busier when I drew a muskox tag in AK.
doug77....in another five years no one will be able to hunt in Iowa, it will be cost probibitive for anyone but the very well to do.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed also. If no luck just have to spend my time in north MO Cheaper tags and as many deer, just not the huge ones that I normally see around Creston, IA.
George ol buddy...that's the only reason I keep working..........
Good luck on the tag. I live about half an hour from Albia. If that is where you are going to hunt there shouldn't be any issue with the flooding. Due to heavy rains earlier in the year alot of the crops didn't get put in until late. I've seen some big boys running around my area already. The trick is finding them during the season.
Steve H.
Not a sure thing with two points in Z6; three is a lock there though best as I can tell.
Who is the Outfitter in the Albia area?
My brother and I have two points and still waiting to hear on zone 5. We plan to hunt near Garden Grove.
Man, I guess I didn't realize it was this tough! Does it ever happen that you get a tag on your first attempt?
I put in for Area 7 or 8 can't remember.
Here's the link for the outfitter we're booked with.
Opp's try it again. Here's the link for the outfitter we're booked with.

Good luck on the draw. I am about an hour and a half east of Albia. You should have any problems from the flood. If you tag out early, with a big buck, don't forget about the small game. Lots of rabbits and such around that area and just a little south.
QuoteI have lived in Iowa for 9 years and haven't seen a big buck yet.
Can't feel sorry, I've been here for 35 and haven't seen one yet.
Yellow Dog,
If you draw a tag let me know.I'm south of Iowa City 25 miles.
About an hour North east of Albia.
Stop in.
There's always a cold pop or beer
Ron
Geez, you never offered me a beer!---- :)
Hey Mike, if I draw a tag this year, I'll show you one :D
These guys that live in Iowa must not drive very far...
I just tried 3 different way to scoot the sytem and confirm my draw; no dice. Hopefully there will be no snafus Friday :knothead:
Hoping for similarly good news though my application is for a zone on the west side (3 I think) so it's closer to home. I can be parking my rig about 60-70 min. after leaving my eastern NE home.
Ia Hawkeye,
You can come over and drink all the beer you want! :bigsmyl:
Party at Kelly house?

Nope....watched a heavy buck who's gonna easily end up above 150".... just off the expressway this morning. Damn city limits deer though.... :)
QuoteHey Mike, if I draw a tag this year, I'll show you one
I'll be wait'n!
Good luck with the draw guys.
Drawing results are posted on the Iowa DNR website. Going to Iowa zone 5 October 29th!!!!
Looks like Biggie, Steve O and Steve H are going too!!!!
Congrats fellers!!
Yes, it looks like I did! Almost was hoping I wouldn't LOL. I have muskox logistics on my brain, very complicated so good thing my buddy Charlie knows his farm so all's I have to do is by a plane ticket and show up!
Woohoo! My brother and I got drawn too. Our outfitter said we were the only bowhunters with 2 points that had booked with him this year.
Steve, know what you're talking about. I called the outfitter as soon as we found out we drew and he said we were darn lucky to draw zone 5 with 2 points.
Aw Steve...poop on a muskox...this is real live big whitetail country. You can walk up to a muskox and kill him anytime...IOWA is a special draw!
This is going to be GREAT!!! Good luck fellas
Big-1, Iowa tags, once every 3 years guaranteed ~what-ever~, AK ox tag, probably once in a lifetime, very low odds to draw.
The only big deal about the Iowa WT tag to me is my buddy Charlie has a farm there. WT are a dime a dozen, LOL.
No big Bucks in S.E. Iowa so you won't want to hunt down this way.
Ow! Steve....that one was right in the heart!!
Like ol Andy Griffith says "that cuts me deeeeep"
:-)
Me and two of my buddies drew for zone 8,my sister lives in LeClaire and this will be my 4th time there, havent connected with a monster but ive seen a few that had me shakin,I also agree that the tag prices are ridiculous,if I didnt have a place to stay I probably wouldnt go,but good luck
I'm now settin on 2 preference points, hope to draw next year!!! Will prolly raise the price by then...lol!!!
I think your outfitters are just getting you pumped up...I think nearly everyone with 2 points drew. I always count on the 3rd year and have been drawing Iowa tags for years.
12 years ago when we 1st started going there, I drew 3 years in a row. Those days are gone :-(
