I am visiting the Kalkaska MI area later in the month of July, mostly to see my wife's family (whom I actually like a lot), fish for walleye with my brother-in-law, and hunt for a Fred Bear bow!
Outside of visiting Grayling and wishing I was a whole lot sooner, is there anything in the way of traditional no-to-be-missed stuff, as long as I'm in the area?
If anyone wants to get together for coffee and trad talk, let me know.

hey bud...ya just missed the mi trad bowhunters jamboree in grayling two weekend ago...aug 1-3 is the elm hall trad shoot...that is supposed to be a real fun one...it is at the pine river rec club....if i wasnt so darn tied up with work and family vacationing....id make the trip up to shoot with ya...have a great time, and bring some mosquito dope...this has been a banner year for them in lower michigan.
there is a Trad shop in Sand Lake called Traditional Outdoor Supply if you are by any chance heading towards Grand Rapids from Kalkaska. Its right on the way.
I'm not close but there are members here that live in or around Kalkaska. A quick look at Michigan Bowhunters News and the closest 3D shoot I could find for late July was in Lewiston. Roughly 50 miles from Kalkaska. I know at one time there was an archery club in the Kalkaska area and for all I know it could still be there.

Kalkaska is not much but about 7 or 8 miles west on M-72 to Elk Lake rd, then north a mile or so is a real nice 3-D coarse so bring your bow. If you can get your hands on a boat the Elk/Torch chain of lakes is 39,000 acres of the prettest water you might ever see as are the Grand Traverse Bays. Tourests seem to like Traverse City to for some reason in the summer time. I just don't see it myself but I suppose when compaired to down state, it's OK. That's about it.

I used to hunt around Kalkaska about 30 years ago. We almost got in a big fight at the Kalho bar!

kalkaska is a poor area overall for deer IMO, but a little travel and you will be into them! There is an Elm hall longbow shoot in two weeks, and in three weeks the great lakes longbow shoot in hastings, MI
