Title: Ground or Tree Stand
Post by: Dave Bowers on July 13, 2008, 03:25:00 PM
I was curious to what everyone here favors? Ground hunting or Treestand hunting?

I'm pretty flexible...I like both methods. Most of my hunting has been from trees, but find myself on the ground more and more when the situation allows.

Trees for deer.  Ground for hogs.

Both.i set stands in locations I plan on hunting alot. When scouting I often set up right away on the ground if I find some hot sign.Especially during the rut.

Don't like climbing trees, had a bad experience early in life.

On the ground for me. I can sit all day in a ground blind but in a tree I am only good for a few hours.

I use both, I have a lone wolf Alpha tree stand and 4 lone wolf climbing sticks, and also a double bull blind (dark horse)

But I find myself hunting more from the ground each year without the blind, just use a natural cover.  But I was able to get these things at a reasonable price so they are there if I want to use them.

I agree with woodslinger so it's a mix of the two. I prefer the ground but sometimes I'll sit in the tree stand. Hell I'm getting old and like naps in the woods, there I said it.

I hunted from trees for years, now only on the ground, I wish I had done this years ago. I really like being on the ground now.

I got out of the trees many years ago and see no reason to go back.  I don't like ground blinds either....too confined for me.  My feet need to be moving....at least a little.

I don't know if this will make sense to anyone but me...     :smileystooges:

I bowhunted earlier in life, but put so much pressure on myself to kill something that it wasn't much fun if I didn't.

This time, I made commitments to:

1. Hunt only from the ground,
2. with a traditional bow, and,
3. Have fun.

What that means to me is, if I take a deer with my bow, great!  If I don't, I still have a great time!  Had several close encounters last year and never connected.  I also had the most fun hunting since that first rush of buck fever, many years ago.

There's a lot to be said for slipping through the woods on a cool October evening, seeing the sights, hearing the sounds, and marveling at God's handiwork.  You can do the same sitting on a stand, I suppose, but it feels more "right" (to me at least) on the deer's level.

That's quite a lot of rubbish to some of my hunting acquaintances, but on the ground, with a simple bow, is what appeals to me.

I let the situation dictate what I'll do.  Mainly being a whitetail hunter, when I find that perfect spot I'll make it work however I can.  If building a small blind or tucking into a blowdown gives me the best opportunity to kill, I'll do that.   Looking for a good tree to climb is usually my first approach though.

Terra-Ferma, I have trouble sitting still for long periods of time, getting better seems to come with the older I get, at sitting still that is.

I hunt from the ground, it's just more fun for me, I use improvised blinds from natural cover. You need to be a little more careful of movement and wind direction when you are on the ground.

When by myself I favor treestands but the ground blind is a great place when I want to take the family out.  Sort of covers up all of the fidgeting that my five year old just cant seem to suppress.

I kind of let the topography, which to a great extent determines how thermals work during my stand time.

Now that I am older,  my love for being mobile, dictate that I hunt the ground about 60 percent of the time taking to the trees the remainder.

Falling to the ground because of bad foot placement, is much shorter journey than  a fall from twenty plus feet.  I have to admit the shot angles are much better on the ground, with a greater number of pass through  occurring when I shoot from the ground.

I would love to hunt from the ground but here in south Louisiana it is almost impossible to be successful as a bowhunter unless you climb. The woods are thick with leaves and palmettoes making a stalk quite noisy.  And because of the misquitoes, snakes, spiders, and other bugs it is not easy staying still in one spot on the ground for too long.

trooper, I hunt out of natural ground blinds in south louisiana all the time, and as far as being succesful, I passed on one shot and missed another shot(both within 15 yards), and that was all in the four total days I bowhunted last year

Ian,
What's your average number of kills per season?  It may be fun to some but I bet those that bowhunt from the ground in south Louisiana don't have much venison in the freezer.

i find that whenever i am up in a tree i see an animal that i want to stalk but cannot because of my position in the tree.  I also sometimes like to chase after game after I have shot it if it is wounded and needs to be finished.

Ground only for me anymore, I like to mix squirrel hunting in with my deer hunting, and stump shooting, and exploring, and bird watching, and just enjoying being in the woods. I would probably get more shots out of my tree stand, at least I used to, but still hunting, mixed with improvised ground blinds is so much more relaxing.

last year did more ground hunting, I do like to use both tactics. I feel you really don't have to go high to get a deer.

Like most alot of folks here, I done most of my hunting from trees. But the last couple of year I been gravitating toward ground hunting more and more.
Theres just something about ground hunting that appeals to me.

Ground for me is hunting, My thoughts on tree stands is just an ambush, you sit and wait...not much fun in that for me...(no offense to anyone that hunts from a tree stand) just my thoughts.
