 Sent. Much Knowledge Lost...
Ron spoke a great truth. A blessed few knew the warmth, humor and humanity of Bill Metcalfe, those traits that made him the individual that he was...is.
The other loss is one shared in common with the rest of us who were not priveleged to know the man. I refer to the great human treasure that we all gather in our lifetimes, and our precious gift to the future. Knowledge and experience are painfully won. Once lost, they are hidden until one of us, through luck and persistance, (and hopefully, remembering what the heck we did!) rediscovers the secret process whereby success is attained. Every time a mentor, a master, a senior, dies, it is left to the rest of us to retain and build upon the truths gleaned and garnered in this person's lifetime.
Learning as much as we can from them in life, retaining that lore, and adding to it honors our mentors and smooths the way for those who come behind us. It appears that Bill knew many who will remember his good words and deeds. Not a bad goal in life, for any of us.
My prayers go out to his friends and family.

Dang that is bad news indeed. Bill was a great guy and I always had fun talking with him when our paths crossed.

Killie, very well spoken. People like Bill will live on in the hearts of those that knew him.

The man with the giant arrow on top of his van!
He will be missed for sure. I never passed his camp that there wasn't a group of folks gathered.I will pray for those who will feel the loss, myself included but mostly for Bills' family. May Gods' peace be with them.
God bless,Mudd
damn!!! Bill was a good man and a great teacher
It's a shame each of us has to succumb to the reality of our mortality, ultimately, but a fair number "live on in the hearts of those that knew him." And Bill will certainly be counted in that number. God bless him and may he rest in peace. I count myself blessed to have known him only casually, but well enough to attest to the above. This says a lot about Bill as well.
   For Bills family.

I never met Bill but it sounds like he left behind a good example and knowledge that will be past on.Prayers for the family
Very sad to hear of the loss. I never met Bill in person, but we spent hours on the phone talking. He was a true ambassador of traditional and primitive archery in this country and beyond. I will miss talking and sharing stories with him. A true loss to our community. Gunna miss ya Bill. dino
 Sorry to hear, prayers to his family.
Dang-- I was just wondering if he would make it MoJam this year. He always stopped at our camp and chatted. He definitely had the gift of gab. I was looking forward to his banter for the auction. Last year his stories were of his trip overseas for a traditional archery shoot, and how much better he was w/ knees fixed. He was a very personable man and great fun to talk to. We'll miss ya, Bill. God bless Bill, prayers for family and freinds..Marco#78
Very sorry for the loss of a traditional brother. Prayers sent to his family and friends.
A natural born teacher and full of knowledge, enthusiasm and fun about flint knapping and traditional ways. There was always a crowd around him at MOJam and he was a generous man with his time. I will miss him there and am sure his name will be mentioned a lot around the campfires in less than two weeks as we gather for that event. Hope they have lots of bandaides in the Happy Hunting Ground - chips will be flying.
Sorry to hear this...he is the only man I know who could whittle a bow with a machette. He had a lot of knowledge and was always will to share it.
Posted by Countrygirl on Tom's sign in.
Hi ya Dina and Tom!!
"he is the only man I know who could whittle a bow with a machette" And he could do it in 90 minutes :saywhat:
My first encounter with Bill was my first MOJAM, even though he was in the middle of a tutuorial with about a half a dozen, or so, people around him, when I walked up and started to watch he stopped what he was doing right then and there to reach out his hand and introduce himself to me. He was a fine man indeed, I pray that God blesses him richly even now.
Prayers for his friends and family. My hope is the knowledge that he passed on to others will continue to "make it's way down the line." To those who learned from him, make it your memorial to him to teach others what he showed you. Quite the legacy to leave behind, as much as a man could hope for.
God's blessings...rest in peace good man. :notworthy:
He was a good man and will be missed ...
Those of us who have had the honor of knowing him must remember to pass on what he shared with us about our sport...
Bill was the real deal. Anyone that could take a stave and a machette and turn out a shootable bow in 30 minutes, has to have one's admiration. Prayers for Bill's Family from Kansas!
Like Hill Boy, I never met the chap, but reading this shows the depth of his character and his wealth of knowledge.
Sounds like he was the type person to want those he tutored in his arts, to "pass it forward."
Prayers for the family...
