Post by: pintail_drake2004 on June 30, 2008, 12:27:00 AM
Howdy yall. Tuesday when i have a free minute, i plan on doing a lil chipping and making a few arrow heads for this upcoming hunting season. The plan is to make a few arrows start to finish. I shoot a BBO 55@26. with plans on 20yd and closer shots. What size dowl do yall suggest i get for this project?

thanks for the help.

I like my shafts 11/32" I think the closest dowls would be 3/8"... You will have to sand them down to size.

...or you could leave them long to compensate. The 3/8" are probably the way to go, since the 5/16" run pretty light in spine. Mid 40's from what I've seen, and they may not be big enough to accommodate a flint head, unless it's a small one.

make your own from lumber cut 3/8" square and plane them round takes about 10 minutes each and then you can use different kinds of lumber.

The simplest way probably is to just get the 3/8" dowels and taper them.  The taper will make it easier to get them shooting, because the spine will be pretty high on those.  Just taper them so that one end is about 5/16.  Lots of diff. techniques on tapering.
