Hey I was sitting around after a round of shooting the other day and got this idea. How about we have a little summer get together, do some shooting, BBQ some food and trade stories and make plans for the season. I was thinking of having this get together at Black River WMA archery range thinking this WMA is pretty central for all of us. There is ample parking, has 3 shooting lanes and offers some shade. All we'll need is a grill, a table or two and food and drinks. So what do you guys think? Send me some feed back.
that sound like a good idea....
Hey Larry,
I'm in, just let me know the particulars.
Larry..where is Black River WMA? If the dates don't interfere with work, sounds great. We missed our annual Tri State Terror dinner at the Flatbrook this year...Calzone Nite...too many things going on with each family...Be talking to ya.....
Hey Larry, Sounds great. I'm in
I would be up for that.
This looks good. Maybe you guys can help contact some of our hunting party.
Sounds good to me too folks.Joe I'll check and see the easiest way for you to get there. If you google the Town of Chester/Randolph though that might help. If you wanted to spend the night I'm sure someone would put you up , or there are hotels in the area too.I'll check with to see if we need a permit for cooking etc, etc.
I just e-mailed NJFGW to see if we need permits for cooking, eating ,drinking, chewing ,scratching and spitting.I'll let you good folks know when they get in touch with me.
Count me in!
Tom, I hope you have better luck getting a response than I have about the Pequest 3D range. It's been more than 2 weeks and I'm still waiting for a call back.
Welcome to NJ!!! It's all because of cut backs I guess. If I don't get a response in a bit I'll call them.
Joe Skipp I sent ya a PM
I'd love to get in on this aswell. I'll keep my eye on this thread for particulars. Skippy

:wavey:
sounds good boys...let me know when my summer is filling VERY fast! i have a 9 day cruise denton hill and a load of yard work to still get done before fall comes!
but if i can sneak away for a few hours to sling a few arras and shoot the breeze ill try my hardest!
Deadbolt,
Please make sure to let Pete know about this.
Thanks
next time i talk to him illmention it bud
Sounds like a good time - if I can make it, I sure will!
I just called NJ Dept. of Fish and Game to see if there is anything we need to do . Such as get permits, etc etc. I'm waiting for an answer from them. After that we can set a date. Is everyone OK with Black River WMA?
Black River sounds good to me.
Also, if anybody wants to shoot on July 27th, the free 3D range at Pequest will be open. It's only a couple miles from Pequest Valley Archery.
Here's the response I got from Keith when I asked about the range.
QuoteEric,
I apologize that the range was not open the last Sunday in May. With the combination of the lack of use, the hatchery now being closed on weekends and that date being in the middle of the holiday weekend, the range was not set up. The range was set up this past Sunday. I had a brand new howling coyote set up at the eighth station. When I picked up the range, there were still no holes in it. The range will definitely be set up on July 27. Depending upon the usage of the range will determine if the range will remain open each month or only around our bigger events like the Pequest Open House in the beginning of April and the Wildlife Heritage Festival in September. While the hatchery remains closed on weekends, the entrance for the 3-d range will be through the current archery range on Pequest Rd. The gate next to the back stops will be unlocked so you can drive to the beginning of the 3-d trail.
Eric, let me check the calender . I would like to check out the range at Pequest "still no holes in it" Howling coyote WOOOOFAAAAA. We best put some holes in that bad boy!! Hey we can hit Hot Dog Johnnies or The Crossroads Diner AND PVA nice!
This might be a better place to go and have our BBQ with our Friends than Black River. 3-D course at Pequest or 3 hay bales at Black River. What do you guys think?
I'd rather do a 3-D range. :knothead:
Pequest,Pequest,Pequest,Pequest....Mark calendars JULY 27th. How's that sound Folks???
27Th NG for me just realized. Oldest daughters B-Day is the July 26, Wifies Aunt and cousin flying in on the 27th from Arizona. Wifies making a party for them on that day. NUTZ!
Yeah me too I'll be on vacation coming home that day. Skippy
I can make the 27th. I'll be on vacation that week. My son might not be able to make it. Having problems with the ex wife. Keep us in your thoughts and prayers.
Thank you.
July 27 is a bad weekend for me i will be at Denton Hill. I know Pete and the gang will be there also.
Larry, hope everything works out for you. If you need anything, let me know. Been there, done that.
For anybody that can make it on the 27th, I'll be there. I believe Lee will be with me, and Sal said he'd ride up with me. The range opens at 10:00.
Sounds like a cheaper alternative to Denton. I gotta save for my new bow. :goldtooth:
ttt
Came home from work had a message on my machine from Bob Olsen NJ Dept of Fish Game and Wildlife. They do not reserve the archery ranges. He said if you plan a group thing your probably better off at Flatbrook/Roy not too many people use that range. He also said he has to check into a Special Use Permit with his Supervisor because I had said we would like to maybe BBQ etc, etc. Usually there is no picnicing allowed at the Archery Ranges. He is supposed to get back to me again. We are dealing with NJFGW so I guess we have to be patient.
let me know when? Eric, tell lee to bring his bow and we can also work on it.

I love ya guys to death but i dont think a day in jersey can replace a weekend of shooting and vendors at denton LOL.
like steve said myself and the gang will be at denton! have a burger for me ill let some arras loose for you guys!
ttt
Tom (deadbolt) I would rather be at Denton, but like I mentioned There is a big bow payment coming up. Unless I get enough baskets quivers made and hopefully sold to cover the trip to Denton.
Do you have a set date yet? 26th or 27th? Set location? I have to work until about noon on that saturday, so I won't be making the trip to denton hill. Would probably be up for some shooting on Sunday if everything works out. Personally I'm more interested in getting together and shooting or stumping than a barbecue, but that's just me. We could always grab some grub somewhere and B.S. before or after. When you guys decide on a location and time, let me know.
Pat, I'll definitely be at the Pequest 3D range on the 27th, and it sounds like at least a few others will be there.
From talking to Keith with Hunter Ed., it sounds like they're considering not opening the range much longer if they don't start seeing some use.
I emailed Keith offering to help with setup...he said that he might take me up on the offer in August. So it sounds like we will also be able to shoot there again in August (the 24th, I believe).
Eric, you best take over. I won't be available that Sunday. Family matters. I leave that Monday for vacation.... New Mexico. For a week . Maybe we can also do the last Sunday in August as well. That would be a good gear up for the Early Bow Season in Jersey. HEC GUYS lets make sure we start using this range before the State pulls it! We could make it a monthly thing for whoever wants to meet up and launch a few.
true, hunting season just around the corner
true, hunting season just around the corner

Yea I hear ya LOL...well I was suppose to go but my boss froze all my vacation days so I had to cancle my denton hill trip, cruise to the caribbean, and a trip to vegas today :(
It stinks taking over new contracts and being short staffed!!!
Where is the entrance to the range? Is it on the same road as the hatchery?
No, it's on Pequest Road, off of Rt. 31. It's back about 3 miles - right behind the hatchery.

Hey Eric,
what time do you plan on getting there? If I can make it I'd like to join you guys. Then probably stop by PVA on my way home.
Bring the camera guys and take some Pics!
I'm gonna try to be there around 9:30 or so. The range opens at 10:00, but I want to try to catch Keith, the guy who is responsible for the range. I think I might also be stopping at PVA while I'm up there.
I just spoke to Bill from PVA [my Tapered Cedars are done!!]. I mentioned you good folks would be getting together for a little fun at the range and that you would all be stopping by later to pay the PVA boys a visit.Well they won't be there on that Sunday. They'll be at Denton Hill or leaving . So the Shop will be closed that Sunday.
Good thing you said something, Tom! Since I can't make it to Denton Hill, I completely forgot about it.
No problemo Eric. Thought it wise to relay the message for all you good folks.
ttt
Bump...it's coming up this Sunday.
I'm gonna try to be there by 9:30 - the range officially opens at 10.
let me know Eric... I still have a few arrows left... Might need to barrow so points for the day... 4 Arrows with not field points.
Let me know what you need Sal. I also still have those arras I made up that are too stiff for my TC if you need them.
Might have to try them, how long are they?
Sal, I'll let you know tomorrow for sure, but I think they're about 31" BOP. I never did much to tune them since they were too stiff from the get-go. I believe they're spined 65-70.
kool, I know I can get them to work form my shrew bow & at that length they should be close to the ROP (Red Oak Pyramid) bow.
Sal, if they'll work for you, stop by one afternoon - I'm home by about 3:30.
I'll try & stop by Wednesday
Eric, will you have your Jeep? I've never been there and I'm not too sure where the entrance is so I'll be looking for your Jeep if that's what you'll be driving.
Yep, I'll have my Jeep. I'll park out near the road for a landmark for everybody.
Here's a link to find Pequest Road on Google Maps. The range is on the left about 3 miles in from Rt. 31. I'm not sure how far it is if you come in from Rt. 46, but it's not too far past the back parking lots for the hatchery.

You good folks enjoy! I'll be thinking about the fun I'll be missing!
Hopefully we'll be able to do it again in August, Tom!
I certainly hope so Eric!I really want Vaughn and Jerry to shoot my Mohawk.
Well, I'm getting screwed out of gong to Denton Hill. :banghead: Looks like I'll be coming over to the Pequest on Sunday. I'll probably have more fun any way since all my buddies will be there. :goldtooth: Hey Larry, Bring the basket quiver. I can either put fur on it for you there or trade it out for another that all ready has fur on it. I'll also have a couple extras in case any one else is interested. See you all there.
Jerry is Gwyn coming too?
If she wants to go I will bring her. Probably will like to come since we are not doing Denton.
OK, everyone heres the bet.... $1,000,000.00 that Gwyn out shoots everyone....
So do we know who all is coming? My neighbor might come with me if his wife doesn't leave him a "honey do" list.
Can't wait to show off my new bow!! :D
The more the merrier!
I know Sal and I are coming. I think Larry and his son Andrew will be there. (Hopefully I'll see them today at a fishing event at Pequest so I can remind Larry.) Jerry, Vaughn...who else?
UH OH!!! Think I'll have to get some shots from that new bow Vaughn.
What did you get Vaughn!!?? Huh,Huh what did you get???
i think pat is going and i should be able to swing it as well.
im hoping someone will bring their longbow in a lighter poundage so i can steal it for a few shots...wink wink to you long bow fellas LOL!!
We just shooting or we going to grab something to eat or whats the game plan guys?
I plan on going and I'm pretty sure that Tom(deadbolt) is coming.
Tom (deadbolt) my mahantango is 47#@28" you are welcome to try it.
Tom that's a sweet shooting bow jerry has...
I swear I'm not handicapped. I didn't see Tom's post before posting mine.
that's ok Pat

Awsome thanks bud!
OK, for you guys coming from the south, take Rt. 31 north through Oxford. Make a right onto Pequest Rd. The range is about 3 miles back on the left.
For you guys coming from the north, take rt. 46. If you're going east on 46 (Jerry, Vaughn...), make a right onto Pequest Furnace Rd. When you get to the end, make a left on to Pequest Rd. Go about 1.5 miles - the range will be on the left.
The archery range is just past the back entrance to the trout hatchery. If you come to a stop sign at Jane's Chapel Rd, you went too far.
Tom, if you want to try a REALLY light longbow, Lee will have his Black Rhino there...35# @ 28.
Guys bring the cameras and post pictures for those unfortunate folks who will be there in spirit!
I'll be bringing the camera.
I just filled a cooler up with a case of water for everybody.
ttt
what time eric
ENJOY!!!!!!
Gwyn and I had a nice time shooting with the few that showed. Vaughn, Pat,Tom Eric, Sal, Lee. The 3-D course was a bit thick and brushy, but made it more like a real hunting experience. I don't know how many arrows were lost, but I don't think it was many. There was an Iron Deer target that was a proving ground for how tough our arrows were, or were not :banghead: . It was darn humid, but luckily the sun was not out cooking us. The rain held off until we were done. The many Raspberries that lined the trails were a nice refreshment especially for Gwyn. We took some strange looks from the compound shooters that filtered through now and then. They probably never saw so many stick bows at once  . Though the course was short and we only shot a couple of hours, it was great to be amongst friends with the stick and string. I'm sure the others have some picks to post. My camera was dead this morning.
WOOOFAAA!!!!
Yup it was a good time although way too short. No real challenging shots on the course even though a few of us made it look that way :readit: Hopefully Eric will post some of the pics he took.
Tom, you forgot to remind me about the tree seat thing, I had it in the back of my wagon :banghead:
ttt
I do have a few pics, but no time to post them tonight (4 am comes way too early!). I'll get them up tomorrow after work.
We sure did make some of those shots seem pretty tough, even though none of them really were.
Even Keith (the guy who set up the course this morning) couldn't believe that we were going to have so many stickbows there today.
YEH STICKBOWS!!!!
Had a great time. Jerry gave me a great looking basket quiver, that can be used like a back quiver or a plains quiver. I was shooting my self made self bow & flinging 60-65# ash arrows that eric don't need since he is now using carbons.
I did way to many misses, but I was up since Saturday morning at 5:00 am. I took a nap around 3:00 p.m. then up at 5:00 p.m.. I agree the course was way short, but this is a free 3-D course and the NJ F&G set it up... May hats off to them.
We talked about a fall group hunt, I said we could do it behind the Owl's nest. It is also a check in Station. This spot you could walk in around Sun up and be able to tag a deer coming up from the corn fields.
Vaughn, That was a nice looking bow You had.
Pat, Lost an arrow shooting it from the area we parked at out past 200 yards easy in to the woods, You may ask Why would he do that for. Well, it was all me... I shoot a 60-65 a good 100 yards from my red oak pyramid bow 51#@24" darted them arrows nicely.
Gwyn had the koolest looking basket quiver. It has 2 areas that looked like rope and nice color strains in the middle.
We had a great time even though it was short. Hey Guys sorry about not meeting up at the diner...I was dead & Eric & Lee add other engagements,
*!@$ vortex and long draw length. I was even aiming pretty steeply into the sky.
Heya guys had a blast yesterday!
Vaughn bro thanks for lunch again! And I totally forgot about the friggin seat...once we start BS'ing my brain goes elsewhere...I think saturday night was still hittin me pretty hard LOL. Once I get a free chance we will do some yote hunting in the special "willow hill seaon" LOL.
Jerry thanks for letting me shoot your bow...it feels pretty kewl to shoot a long bow and on the ride home with Pat I managed to trade one of my recurves for a new longbow LOL so soon enough I wont be the only recurve shooter in the group LOL. Oh and your lil one is to cute man I had a blast just watching her out there fling arrows and raise hell LOL. Its great to see kids enjoying the sport!
Eric and Lee thanks for setting all this up it was a ton of fun and we need to all get together and shoot again! Maybe we can all get together and hit up a 3D or something where we will have more targets. And Lee is doing pretty good...can't wait to see his new cedars!
Sal always a pleasure to bust your chops and fling some arras! Your getting to be one with the bow man LOL! Some awsome bows your producing.
All in all a great day...I shot decent with my new carbons...gonna take some gettin use to with em but I think I'll be A O K come september!
Tom, gotta count me in on that yote huntin'. I'll be glad to be at least a caller for ya. The kid is a handfull. She likes to be her own person ya know. I just let her go for it just like my folks did for me. Hope to see you shootin' a stick soon. One last thing.... gotta get some of those ADs.
Yea man we all gotta get out there!! And them AD are tuff!!!

Great Pic's Eric....
If anyone is interested there's a shoot not too far away this Saturday. It's between Bath and Palmerton, Pa.
http://tradgang.com/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=94;t=000946
Eric, thanks for all the pics of Gwyn. Since my camera was dead that morning, nice to be able to remember the moments.
Awsome pix eric! Wish I could make it this weekent but I'll be helping my brother move into his new apartment :(
Hey Vaughn what size shafts did you say you used to foot them AD's?
Also your PM box is full bro FYI.
Hey Guys,
Sorry Andrew and I didn't make it there. We were away and just got back this afternoon. Looks like you all had a great time. Any future plans to do it again?
Jerry I will have to catch up with you for the quiver fur.
Dang wish I coulda made it...looks like a great time
Larry, I think we'll probably be back there in August. It's the 4th Sunday, whenever that happens to be.
Like everybody else said, the course was a little short. Only 15 targets spread out over 12 stations, I think. But the price sure is right, and it really wasn't crowded at all. We were able to take our time and have a good time.
Great pics Eric. I'll have to hi-jack a few for my personal library.
Tom, that would be the 2413's to foot the AD's
"Willow Hill" ooh yeah!!!
Thanks bro!!
Awwwwww yeeeeaaaaa!!!!
Just to let you guys know, I received an email from Keith yesterday. He really appreciated such a strong showing of folks shooting the course.
He also said that as long as it's being used, it will be kept open (on the scheduled days).
:archer:
I just realized that this Sunday is the 3D range for August at Pequest.
Anybody interested???
I thought about it aswell but I'm going to take my son to the lincoln park shoot instead. Anyone want to join us for a few hours in the a.m. I'll be there hopefully early. Skippy
I'll be out of State... House/pets/horse sitting...
This Sunday could work for me. Plus PVA will be open kill two birds with one stone.Let me double check and I'll let you good folks know.
HMMMM Lincoln Park Shoot is about 5 minutes from my house gotta think now.
What time Sunday at Pequest?
Let me know what time. I think I can make it.
I think I can do this Sunday!
The range at Pequest "officially" opens at 10:00, but I know it was set up alot earlier, and Keith told us that there was no need to wait till 10:00. So I would think if we met around 9:00?
Or, Lincoln Park could be fun - I haven't been to that shoot in probably 20 years. I think it used to be somewhere in Boonton.
Nope Lincoln Park is about a 10 minute ride from my house. Wish I could go but I have a family reunion up in Conn this weekend. Hope you guys have a great time where ever you decide to go.
Up to you and the Good Folks Eric. Lincoln Park would probably take you around an hour to an hour 15 minutes to get there. See what everyone wants to do. There will be wheely folks there.
How's the course at Lincoln Park. It's not much different in distance for me either way. Pequest didn't have a ton of targets, but it was fun. PVA is an option there too. Let me know if you guys finalize plans. Hate to loose the pequest course for non-use.
Personally I think our time is better invested in going to pequest so that they see there is interest in the place. That way it may still be available to us in the future. JMO
Agreed
Well that looks like 2 definite votes for Pequest. I'm off to work, I'll check back in the morning to see what everyone else thinks.
Vaughn, I feel the same way about Pequest. I'd hate to see us lose it because no one uses it.
I'm torn now. I think pequest may be better for my sons first shoot. Less pressure from the impatient wheelie guys and all that. I'll have to think about it. What's the easiest way there from say rt.80? In case I decide to go there too. Besides I sure would love a visit to PVA. Skippy
well I'm at the house that the wife and I are watching...I have internet.
Jason,
I don't know which Franklin, N.J. you are coming from but if its the one by me your best bet would be xt12 off rt80 then go south on 521 toward 519south(Hope Bridgeville Road) follow to rt46 go east on 46 to turn right onto Pequest Furnace Road then turn left onto Pequest road the entrance to the range is about 1.5 miles down on your left. Hope this helps.
I'll have to look into it. I'm just off Rt. 23 near Sparta. I'll be taking Rt. 15 to Rt. 80 west. I know I can get right on 46 west from 80. I'll have to check mapquest for pequest rd. Thanks
I'm willing to do Sunday at Pequest. Would like to hit PVA as well. It will be the first chance I've had to get out and do any thing in a while with the gang.
It will be Pequest then. It'll be good to see you folks. I'll bring my Horne's and the Mohawk. Do you want to meet in the Diner?
Skippy, here's a link to Pequest Rd. on Google maps. You can put in your starting address and get directions to it. The range is a little farther on Pequest Rd. than where the marker is - closer to Jane's Chapel Rd. The range will be on your right...you really can't miss it.
Somewhere back around page 5 of this thread, I think I also typed out directions from Rt. 46.

Tom, which diner? Maybe Lee and I will meet you there.
I'll call PVA and make sure they'll be there Sunday.
Crossroads Diner on the corner of 46 and 517 is it??
Gotcha. I think it's at the corner of 46 and 519. At least that's the place I'm thinking of. Let me know what time.
To get to the range from the diner, make a left onto 46 (east). A little ways past rt. 31, make a right onto Pequest Furnace Rd. Follow that to the stop sign at Pequest Rd. Make a left onto Pequest Rd. The range will be on the left - I think it's about 1.5 miles after you turn onto Pequest Rd.
BTW Skippy, this is a great course to start young-uns out on. Most shots are 20 yards or less, and last month it wasn't really busy at all. We didn't have anybody waiting on us to find arrows, even with the big group we had. I don't know how old your son is, but my 12-year-old will be there.
Yes on the corner at the light 46 519 Crossroads Diner. Reiner might come too. So Reiner, my Bud Steve, and me Diner 8:00/8:30. Eric did you call Bill or Scott at PVA?
Lee and I will meet you at the diner around 8:00/8:30.
I called PVA earlier. Got the recording. Said they're open 10 - 4 Saturdays and Sundays, but closed this Saturday.
I forgot to call back later, but I think we can assume they'll be there Sunday, since the recording specifically said they won't be there tomorrow.
That's great Tom, I'm glad to hear you got Reiner to come.
Vaughn, that's what Reiner said Friday morning. He said he'd really like to see all you folks again. I'll call Alex too but I know he's real busy.I'll be bringing up my Bud Steve. I had him shooting in the back yard yesterday. Of course they sold him the wrong arrows at the wheely bow shop for his recurve. He'll have both bows he wants to take a deer with his compound first and then make the switch.Maybe we can sway him. Eric I'll PM you my cell #.If the PVA recording said closed Saturday and no mention of Sunday they should open. I'll call them Sunday morning for sure. Steve needs arrows.
Tom, unless your cell # changed since winter bow, I have it.
I need to pick up a dozen GTs as well tomorrow. Need to make me some huntin' arras!
Just checked my email - got it!
Sorry dudes, looks like I'll be going to Shohola for the day tomorrow. Probably get in a bunch of stumpin'. Enjoy the day. Hope to catch up another time before the season gets underway. WOW, like 3 weeks?
Bummer Jerry! Well I spoke to Alex he's real busy but he'll try to come anyway. Hec of a ride for him too.Tried getting in touch with Reiner called his cell and his house. Left two messages we'll see. George is in Maryland setting up the daughter in a new apartment for college. Larry is in Conn. So far two positives me and my Bud Steve.
I plan on making it as well. If I can get my butt out of bed I'll try to meet you guys at the diner.
My son and I are going to try and make it. Not sure if well make the diner. If not I'll see you guys at the range. My son Matthew is 5 and has not had much practice at all with the bow so it'll be a learning experience for him.
I had a great time today even though the State forgot to set up the 3-D range!!! LOL!!! In side joke. Was good seeing all my Trad Gang Brothers once again! Eric, his son Lee,Vaughn, Patrick, and Skippy and his little guy! PLUS the quality time at Pequest Valley Archery!Did alot of work found the right arrows for Steve and we are splitting a dozen so he's all set. He WILL hunt with the Kohannah Kurve opening day!YES! Vaughn that Marriah Chinook shoots nice Bud! Thanks!I'll be back with Steve, Bucky, Larry, Andrew, and anyone else, next Sunday when they put out the 3-D targets for sure! CrossRoads Diner and Blueberry Pancakes![sausage on the side]
It was a pleasure meeting you all. I hope to meet up with you guys for a hunt or two this season.
Lee,thanks for bringing out the balloons for you and Matthew to shoot at. He's very excited to have popped his first balloon. I think he may be hooked.
Bentpole, Those sure are some sweet shooters you have there. I think I shot better with your bows than I did my own.
Thanks to PVA for tapering my shafts so I can finally get my woodies setup. I hope to take my first deer with trad this year. Good luck to all this coming season I hope to meet up with you all again soon. Thanks again. Skippy and Matthew
Jason, gotta' love those Longbows!!! Horne's Traditionalist and The Mohawk!!
Glad Y'all had a great time. Sorry I wasn't there.BTW next Sunday is the 4th Sunday of the month.
BTW, The starter is coming up quickly. Anyone want to come hunt some nice land up by me? Behind the owl's nest (pohat North wma)? Let me know...
Eric has to take his wife somewhere (can't say for what...I do know tho)anyway. If no one else wants to join me I'll be hunting behind the house.
Again soory I missed the shoot guys.
Sal, me and my Bud Steve would like to keep you company!!! Eric said Sweet Hollow picked up another 99 acres too!
Actually, Sal, next Sunday is the 5th Sunday of the month. But the sign at Pequest said the course is set up for the LAST Sunday of the month. A little confusion somewhere. I'm going to email Keith this week to make sure it will be up for next Sunday.
BTW, I might be able to make it to either Pohat or Sweet Hollow on the 13th. Jen is going to see if she can get a later appointment. I told her it just wasn't right to keep me home on opening morning.
Hey Sal, would love to come join you by your place or where ever. I'll just need to know where. Maybe I can do next sunday at Pequest too.
kool, let me know. where? both spots are nice. Behind the Owl's nest we would just have to stay and wait for the deer to walk up the hill. Then just a drag down hill to check them in.

I know, have to see the maps now. I want to be neart the one spot at was at on the last day, doing the evening hunt...This time I'll be ready for the deer to walk by (in front of me).
SOOOO who'se up for his coming Sunday!!??
So far I'm in. I emailed Keith today to make sure the course would be set up.
I just checked my email - I had an automated response from Keith saying that he is on vacation out of state through Labor Day.
I have a feeling that means the course won't be set up. I'll try calling tomorrow to see if he might have gotten someone else to set it up.
If not, maybe we can come up with a place to do some stumpin'.
Eric, any new news on the Range for Sunday Bud?
walden--has a trad-shoot mon--its a great time
If we don't get the 3-D at pequest how about a scout trip... We can do Pohat North & Sweet Hollow

I knew there was something I forgot to do! Been a little hectic around here - my father in law passed away Tuesday night.
I'll try calling tomorrow.

Sal, that's what I was thinking. We can always do a little stumpin' out there too.

I'd like to go and shoot someplace this weekend. Pequest or Eric's on Sunday and Walden on Monday is do-able for me.
Mike glad to see you are up and about.
Walden is a good shoot..........Monday is traditional only too.
WOOOOFAAAAA..... "Magic Mike" is in the house!!! How you feeling Bud!!?? Mondays out for me Folks. I want to go to the Green Corn Festival up in Sleepy Hollow {Philipsburg Manor} Hudson Rivers Native American Festival and Momma said SHE Would like to go too!!?? Eric sorry to hear of your Father in Laws Passing.May he RIP.
Well, I don't think Pequest will be set up Sunday. I called the hatchery today - they said they weren't aware of any arrangements Keith made to have the course set up while he is on vacation.
Hudson Rivers Native American Festival , where is that at?
Sal, sent you a PM
Got it....LOL
Well went to PVA with Eric & Lee, had a good time and got some stuff. I picked up 6 birch shafts to try out. Eric & Lee had Scott help them with arrows. Tomorrow We are going to scout Pohat & sweet hollow, if anyone wants to join, let us know.
FOLKS GOOD NEWS AND BAD NEWS!!!! Well Steve and myself took the journey today. Went up to Pequest WMA after a hardy breakfast of Blueberry pancakes at the Crossroads Diner. The targets were up. Steve and I shot the course . Very Tuff not because of the distance of the targets or the set up but because of how overgrown the course was. Do Not miss! Poor Steve first 2 targets lost 2 arrows.Even had a steel deer; aced it [bigger vitals than Whittingham]. About half way threw Larry and Andrew called to say they were close by. He arrived around the time Steve and I were finishing up. Larry and Andrew shot 3 or 4 targets and we met up in the parking lot. Went over to Pequest Valley Archery Steve is all set with arrows[35/55 GT's], broadheads , new string, new dingleberries [Scotts cat whiskers]. Larry and I have him shooting very well three under. Larry shot Steve's 58" Kohannah Kurve like he was Reiner !!!![very well] LOL!.Ok now the bad news. Pequest Valley Archery is closing forever at the end of the year! More good news though, Everything on the shelves is 30 % off! No custom stuff or bows. But, broadheads, field tips, inserts, nock, feathers, strings that are made up etc, etc. What a shame, been going there for years.
Wow, Eric was told that there was not going to be a course set-up.
Eric, Lee & I did some scouting behind the Owl's nest. We saw 2 nice scrapes that weren't that old. We found 3 good trees just off the trail to set up on. We then went to sweet hollow and Eric picked out 2 trees and the spot I was at on the last day of winter bow, You could see that the power co. cut down a lot of brush along the power lines. Lots of sign at both places. Eric also kicked up a yote & we came across a dead deer. The only thing left was the bones. Everything is looking good for this coming season.

Ya know, I was wondering about that when we were there last week. The shelves were pretty bare, some equipment was for sale, and the 30% off signs were up.
I guess Scott didn't want to say anything with all the people that were there.
It really is a shame. They're handy if you need something in a pinch, and I've really enjoyed just going there and shooting the bull. Not to mention Scott was realy a big help yesterday. Gave Lee some pointers that I might never have picked up on, and really increased my confidence in my setup.
Eric, Bill and Scott should be entered in the New Jersey Traditional Archery Hall of Fame!! They have converted/helped SOOOOO many of us it is truely a shame to see them go.Their prices were always right. Had plenty of info when needed and are just good folks as most of us have found out! Nothing to do on a Sunday? Call up see if their open.Want to try a bow out no problem always targets setup, tune, bareshaft, you name it . Not to mention all their time and effort they put in at the Whittingham Shoots over the years as APPALACHIAN BOWMAN Members . Well at least now they can get some hunting time in. Two Truely great folks that are welcome at my hunting camp or camp fire any time!!! By the way I still think to this day Scott makes the best bow strings and Bill makes the prettiest tapered cedars around!
Bummer about PVA, Guess I'll be left with online shopping only now. :(
Jerry, yeh you and me both Bud! Sal and Eric, with the addition of those acres at Sweet Hollow that could be a hot spot this year! As long as the hunting pressure isn't there.Did they clear cut the Power Lines? If they did that new growth could help us too!
Not all was cut, but it does look different. We don't know where the new land is yet...
Alot of the brush along the power lines was cut, but there are still some pockets of it. I have 3 stand sites picked out - 1 right along the power lines, and 2 others within 100 yards of them. Hell, all 3 stands are probably within 150 yards of each other!
We went for a ride when we were done - the new land isn't posted at all yet, and it's not on the maps either.
Sounds good Eric and Sal! Great report! You folks think there's room for this old guy? That new land >>>---> SHHHHHH. Hey we have to wack a doe first there correct?
Yes, before Oct 4th You need a DOE first.. Yes Tom, there is lots of room at both places...
Plenty of room Tom! I'll only really be able to hunt the afternoon on the opener, but I might head to Sweet Hollow depending on who comes down this way. Otherwise, I'll be in the ladder at my parents' house.
Less than 2 weeks to go!
Hey could I come with you guys?
with these temps ill be on the boat...its crazy hunting in this heat LOL!
Tom, Supposed to me in the 90's this week but supposed to be a high of 76 on september 10th. Look at the trend. Until those big stripers are running back down, I'm gonna try to pull you off that boat given half a chance.
Sure You can Larry.
Tom, it was kool in the woods the other day, but walk out in the light and it got warm fast... In Hot weather, the deer will look for water. They still move, just got to go look for them.
Ok I got my permit for Sweet Hollow in my pocket.
Larry, you just want to hunt sweet hollow? How about behind the Owl's nest then sweet hollow? I'm hoping I can find a ride, since no car.. If not then I'll be hunting the back woods all day. Hopefully Eric might be able to pick me up for a afternoon hunt at sweet hollow.
Sal, I'll definitely be out for the afternoon hunt - I should be home from that appt. around 10:00 or so. If it stays this dry between now and then, I think I'll hunt that hickory along the stream at Sweet Hollow.
You guys should hunt that ridge behind the Owl's Nest in the morning. I really think that's gonna be a good spot. Sit tight until about 10:30 - 11:00 and I'll meet you there for lunch.
I'm game, I have to find a ride.. Really don't want to ride my mountain bike, But If I do... Can you give my bike a ride home Eric?
Time is getting close Jersey Boys....make sure those Thermacells are in working order. Those Jersey Skeeters may not be the biggest but those Bast....s sure chew you up in bunches!
I know Scott's thinking about wrapping himself up in Duct tape....Mikey sez he's going to start chewing large cloves of raw garlic....and I have an extra large fly swatter.....
all you need is one of those little battery fans, keep air moving and no bugs
Sal, I might be interested in hunting the morning with you guys. I never been down there, so I might need to be pointed in some direction. I could pick you up and may be you could ride home with Eric
Jerry, you could take 46 to 519. Follow 519 for about 15-20 miles, and it will take you right by Sal's house. Or you could take 33 south to 78 - Sal can give you directions from there. That way would probably be easier in the dark.
Sal, as long as the hitch haul isn't full of venison I'll be able to give your bike a ride home.
I've been to Sal's place. Guess he won't need the bike if I pick him up.
Joe Skipp, I was practicing wrapping myself up in Saran Wrap to keep the sketters off. Only problem was I couldn't breathe worth a POOP! I'll let you Folks know what i'll be doing for sure.Zone 2 and 5 are open as well. Don't forget to download and print Sweet Hollow Land Trust Letters! Must be on you!Where's this Owl's Nest Place? What Highway? Need Directions.
If I hunt ill either still hunt assumpink wma ir take the ride up north to zone 2 and sit on stand.
Haven't decided but if the temps are up I won't bother...shoot gut drag skin quarted butcher vaccum seal its a lot of work for one guy to do in one night. If its cool out ill go bc I can take my time but if its warm it takes the fun out of it.
Tom (deadbolt), how you solve that problem is you shoot a little one, clean it and put it on the BBQ whole. A few brewskies and your set.
Good idea jerry LOL
Tom, here ya go. The marked address is the Owl's Nest. To hunt the WMA, park along Mellick's Wood Rd. - the end at the SE corner of the map. The WMA is right across rt. 519.
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=97+county+road+519,+phillipsburg,+nj&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=31.839416,78.75&ie=UTF8&ll=40.641589,-75.146549&spn=0.007441,0.019 226&z=16&iwloc=addr (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=97+county+road+519,+phillipsburg,+nj&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=31.839416,78.75&ie=UTF8&ll=40.641589,-75.146549&spn=0.007441,0.019226&z=16&iwloc=addr)
And here's a topo map of the WMA so you can get a better idea where the property is in relation to the roads.
http://www.state.nj.us/dep/fgw/pdf/wmamaps/pohatcong_north.pdf
Tom's hunted my back woods last year... Didn't see a deer, but it was a good hunt.
Kool, Thanx Jerry... that will work. I'm going to bring my video camera. Hopefully get one on tape.
P.S. Jerry You'll have room for a climber?
always a good hunt sal! we'll have to do it again this year!
come on up, Always room for you Tom.
Ok who is all coming to the Morning hunt at Pohat North ( Owl's Nest ). The reason is for time to met then go park down the road. NO parking at the owl's nest, cars will be Towed.

I like to be all set-up about 1 hr before Sunrise 5:00 AM. So we would have to meet at 4:00 AM so we can walk in slow and quite as to not make noise & build up sweat..
I should be able to fit your climber Sal. How big is it? I don't use any of that so I'll have my bow and quiver in the car. What time at your place?
Decisions, decisions.....I also have permission to hunt a small property in zone 9 that is full of deer.
Jerry if you want to go in early then 4:00 Am my place. I can show you the first scrape, it's on a major trail.
Ok, I should be able to do that. 4AM your place on the 13th. If any thing comes up, I'll try to give you plenty of notice.
Kool, there is a semi-opening up the trail more Or You can go to the high trail. Should be hunters up there, too. Where we well be is in between the corn fields and the top of the ridge. Where was some blow downs, but hard to find in the dark.
I'm good at finding blow downs in the dark. Ask Vaughn how many I have fallen into. :biglaugh:
kool... Then we can use one more on the that trail.
Jerry, is Vaughn hunting the opener?
No one else for the Morning hunt?
How many so far Sal? Still haven't decided yet. I want to walk a new piece on Sunday morning. I'll let you folks know.
Jerry & I so far
Sal,
I won't know what's up with my schedule til the middle of next week. I may have to stay more local. If not, I may be able to swing up there. I'll let you know.
Kool, Pat. there is room
Tom, don't know what Vaughn will be doing. I see he has not chimed in yet. I know he has been pretty busy with kids football etc.
Eric, how about we meet around Noon. give the deer some time to walk up the hill. Everyone doing the afternoon hunt we can meet at the owl's Nest.
Noon should be good. Sweet Hollow for the afternoon?
I'm game, If I don't get one in the morning that is.
If I do I have to work on cutting it up, then I hunt in the back yards it I still have time.
I still have no idea where I want to hunt next Sat. I'll be getting off work Friday night at 11. Any advice guys?
Looks like I have other plans for opening day. Good luck guys.
Larry come hunt with Us...
well they are calling for a 30% chance of rain, if it does rain, I'll stay home. I don't like hunting in the rain... But we will see come Thursday if the weather changes
Just came home. Vaughn and I had a great day checking out a new piece today. He let me shoot the Marriah while he had breakfast sweet bow! Alex called while I was there good to hear from him! Boy oh boy I think we found a sweet spot!
Kool, good luck
Andrew and I took a walk on the small piece I have over in zone 9. We located some very good spots for ground hunting or tree stands. We even set up and brushed in a pop up blind. I'm thinking of going to this area the afternoon of opening day.
well looks like myself and the gand will be in zone 2 on private land for the opener...
ill be in the woods but i have lost vision for the most part in my right shooting eye so dont think ill be doing much hunting unless they are within 5 yards.
either way ill use my left eye for some inseasons couting while sitting in the woods.
what happened tom? How did you lose vision in your right eye?

hey tom, good to hear you too. i got to make it to pequest archery 1 day this week before i leave on friday. by the way, it looks like I'll be away every weekend until the last one in October.Show Biz! our weekends are Tuesdays and Wednesdays :) . any of you guys hunt during the week?
I hunt during the week. Sal if you don't hunt the rain then I'm going over by Vaughn's place. Tom (bentpole), were you and Vaughn out in back? Guess I'll have to try out my old spot back there I don't mind rain.
I really don't like to hunt in the rain. To many things can go wrong.. I know more come Thursday....
Alex B. We have to get together again! I know your real busy Bud. Jerry, no Vaughn and I checked out another new piece that I came up with [No sense scouting land you know already keep your scent out of there, to close to the opener!]Let's see what happens weather wise for Saturday! If you hit them good you don't have to track them far. Hit 'em in the crease!
Sal while on vaction in mexico my eye got infected from bacteria in the water and from the infection there are scars on my eye which have caused perminant vission loss...doc said once its healed ill have to get new prescriptions for my contacts and glasses b/c the vision loss will be so drastic.
We'll see how bad it turns out in the weeks to come.
Tom, Chin Up young man! Hope to hunt with you this season! Alex, PVA is open today, Wednesday, and Friday , Plus the weekend.Bill and Scott don't have to much left Bud!
Deadbolt....should have to California...no difference and there you can drink the water.
QuoteOriginally posted by bentpole:

Nope. I cleaned them out of their Gold Tip 3555s last week.
Tom, hopefully everything works out with your eye. I know how scary that can be - had a detached retina about 17-18 years ago. My vision in my right eye will never be right, even with glasses.
oh dont worry fellas ill be out there with one or two eyes! you aint stoppin this gnome from dropping the string on some critters!
can't wait for the winter drives this year!
Sorry to hear about your eye Tom. Hope your recovery turns out better then hoped for.
Jerry, they dropped the chance of rain down to 30%. You still want to come down here to hunt? I'm putting more Tru-oil on my bow to seal it even better it is now 10 coats on it...
Hey Sal. Sorry, I think I'm going to hit a little spot behind Vaughn's. Turns out I'll only have a few hours to hunt because I have to head down to Bergen County for the afternoon. Vaughn's is much closer for me. Vaughn and a few others going some other place. I didn't scout with them, so I don't want to be crawling around a place I don't know and mess it all up. I do want to try another time with you. May be we can get a better group together.
Vaughn, Is your brother -in -law going Saturday? How many folks are going to be on that piece? Too small for more than Three Folks. I have another spot I can hit in the AM . Please let me know. Bucky downloaded the permit but he can go elsewhere also.Vaughn you have to hit that spot we found for you! You will wack something!
Kool with me....
Eric I'll be hunting behind my house if You want to swing by around noon I'll be ready to go to sweet hollow with You.
Let me know if that's good with you?
Good luck, guys!
I'm hoping to stick one this afternoon in zone 19... 48# 50's grizzly and an an arrow that my late father used in the 70's & ww on the front end...
Cheers,
RHiNo
no luck... but the stump... er... groundhog hunting was great! I also almost sat on this little guy!
He got away...
So, how did everybody do?
I sat at my parents' house this morning with Lee. Mmmmmmissssssssssssed an easy 20 yard shot at a doe. I had to shoot over the rump of a fawn that was a couple of feet in front of her. I think I was a little worried about the shot, and put it right where I was looking - the gap between the fawn's rump and the vitals of the doe. About 3 inches too low.
Went to Sweet Hollow this afternoon - had deer in sight almost the entire afternoon, but none came any closer than about 60 yards.
Andrew and I went to sit one of my spots on the ground in zone 9. We got there on stand by 3 and spent an enjoyable afternoon together. We saw our one and only deer, a nice buck but he was at least 50-60 yards away moving away from us. No way to tell how many points but he was as wide as is ears. We made our way out around 7 and didn't kick anything up. We had a great time!
