if you had to choose 4 plains game species to hunt over a watering hole, what would they be, also, show some pics of your plains game kills
Hopefully you'll get some good responses and pics. It is my life-long dream to go myself. My list would include:
Greater Kudu
Gemsbok
Sable
Nyala
Roan
Oryx
Wildebeest

The one I would truly love but could not afford is the Sable. Gemsbuck are a beautiful trophy also. Joseph

Caracal
Nyala, Kudu, Impala, and zebra or warthog. In that order. Sable would also be high on the list but unfortunately is also on the too high priced list for me.

Danny
Andy,
Sitatunga??? Where are they found? Have not seen them on a species list. Looks like they have spiral horns like most of the ones I wish to take. Maybe I can add one of those also.
Danny
Danny, for one of those you have to go the central africa in the rain forests, I dont think they live in southern africa
The Gemsbok is a beautiful animal and very worthy of being one of your trophy animals.

Another would have to be the South African "Whitetail"...the Impala.

If money were no object, I believe the premier plains game would be the Sable. For others like me, the Greater Kudu would have to do, but unfortunately, I could not get one with my recurve, but took a great 52" one with a rifle.
Danny,
The sitatunga is a very rare antelope that is found primarily in the Okovango Delta, Botswana and in some places in the Caprivi, Namibia. As you can see by where they reside, they are very dependent on water in that they eat the reads and grass that grow on the edges of bodies of water. They are one of the only antelope that spend most of their time immersed in water, and when they are disturbed by predators, they completely submerge themselves in water leaving only their nose out of the water so they can breath.
They have similar spiral horns to that of a Nyala. They are an amazingly beautiful antelope, and are very rare and shy. I don't know of anyone that has taken one with trad bow, but they are definitely one of my dream animals to hunt! ;)

hi Danny
see Nigel helped me out there, there distribution is Swamp forests and marshes in Central and Western Africa.
as well as being able to completely submerge them selves in water to avoid predators they also have a very interesting hoove which is elongated with a wide splay allowing them to walk easly boggy and marshy ground, check this out.

Well Rob, Bongo are endangered so cannot hunt them. Pretty animal though.
Danny
tradtusker, I was invited to go with some guys who live there, they all rifle hunt but they said they have a few hides over watering holes that I could bowhunt out of, I told my parents that this is what I want for my senior trip since I will be graduating highschool next year, so I am saving my money for the trip, I just had know idea what I wanted to hunt, I am also getting a new bow for the trip, a voodoo kustom elk riser td longbow, keep the pics coming guys, it just makes me more excited for the trip
Thats cool Ian and a good opportunity to get out there go for it.
most people start with warthog and impala as there first as i did because they are plentiful and pretty cheap but you gotta be careful because they are real string jumpers.
if there is any advise or help you need before the trip don't hesitate to give me a shout.
tradtusker pm sent
A BIG warthog
Any Nyala
A chance at the same Kudu that never gave me the shot in '03
A chance at the same Blue Wildebeast that never gave me a shot in '03
As Andy pointed out, the warthog and impala are unbelievably quick. A good tip that was never relayed to me until after 6 were gone before my arrow was 3 feet of the string: wait until a warthog goes to it's knees to drink before dropping the string. They make even a Texas whitetail look slow in comparison.
Danny, you can still hunt Bongo in Cameroon and Central African Republic...but as the saying goes, "if you have ask how much it is..." ;)
Good luck on your hunt, it is an experience that you will never forget.
Nyala
Eland
Gemsbok
Kudu

JC...I bet you'd be pretty quick too if you lived in the African bush for a couple of months.
