Title: Keeping it Alive, The Old and The New
Post by: Huntrdfk on January 01, 2007, 02:26:00 PM
The last couple of days have been pretty productive around my house, all without ever leaving the yard.  First, a good friend who is partly responsible for me getting into traditional archery came by to shoot.  What you ask, is so special about that?  Simple, he hasn't hunted or shot for about ten years.  We are still in contact about once a month, and we always talk about hunting and bows, but he has drifted away from it.  Then he called last week and asked if I wanted to shoot with him....duh.
Well, Pete came over on Friday, and he, Hunter and I spent three hours shooting our little 3D course and then stump shooting.  It was simply a blast, and I think the hook has been reset.  Pete assured me he will be calling again in the near future.  (Unfortunately we neglected to take pic's while we shot....we were just too involved in shooting and having fun).

Then yesterday two of my nephews were at the house for the afternoon.  Both are pretty athletic, but neither parent hunts nor are they outdoor oriented.  Alec, age 10, and Matt, age 6, immediately started telling me they wanted to shoot bow and arrows, well, what is an uncle to do?

This is what I did...........here is Matt as he shot at the bear target

This is the first shot Matt had ever taken at a 3D target....

Here is Alec shooting at a deer.....

And here is the result of Alec's shot at a turkey

Here is Hunter shooting.....

And at the end of the course these are the results on the last target...

It was a pretty good couple of days, on the way home yesterday Matt said to me, "Uncle David, Bow and Arrows are my second favorite sport now" (behind baseball), that brought a smile to my face.  Matt went home with a red fiberglass bow and two arrows, along with a big smile.....

As a topping on the weekend, the one picture that was taken when Pete was here was of Hunter and I at full draw together.  It has quickly become one of my favorite images.....

All in all, a pretty good weekend.

It's funny Mike, it was an uncle that started me into hunting, now I am the only one in the family that does so, along with Hunter.

Shawn, I do like it, you, Curt and Joe are all partly responsible for my choice.

Joe,  funny thing is I'm a Dolphins fan, the rest of my family are fanatical Pats fans, with my wife leading the way!

In years to come those boys are going to be talking on some internet forum about how their uncle introduced them to this sport.
Every kid needs an uncle like this.
Well done!!!

Sounds like a great weekend. Love the pictures with the snow, I have almost forgot what it looks like this year. Getting people involved in archery is something that makes my love of the sport stronger.

Very cool Dave. The state is asking me to do a Bow Hunter Safety Course this winter, do the boys have their Hunter Safety cards? If they do you could get them in if you want.

Priceless, Dave. I know you had fun. A Little story:
I had the same kind of day last year with my then 6 year old niece. Shortly after in front of a parents crowd at her trendy Cambridge, Mass school, the kids were asked what they want to be when they grow up, she said..."I wanna be a Bowhunter"  :D
can you close your eyes and imagine the look on the crowd's face??!!

Alex that is priceless, I would have loved to have seen that.  I have had a number of Hunter's friends here, and eventually it always turns to shooting bows.  I have yet to see a kids face without a smile on it when he or she shot an arrow and hit any part of the target they were shooting at.  I also consider myself fortunate in that I have never had a negative reaction from a parent when they learned their children shot bows and arrows at my home.
