Title: saxton bows-what do you think
Post by: j yenney on June 25, 2008, 11:35:00 AM
I was wanting to know ALL opionions of saxton
recurves. Is there a better bow out there for the money, in the same 50's style recurve. Are these bows a custom bow or a mass produced bow ?

An early thanks

Well, I have a Saxon ( I guess that's what you are meaning) and it is quite the bow. Are there others just as good ? I'm sure there are.Are they better quality ? I don't see how. Thing with bows is, folks tend to go with a known quantity. Randy's workmanship is 1st rate and the price is fair and competitive. I have the Kadiak, beautiful bow and a shooter.
BTW I have one of his American Longbows too. As I saidf, I go with a known quantity.

Do you know how much he charges for a recurve? I looked on his site and there were no prices.

Check out Saxon archery's website (not sure what it is or if I could link it- just google Saxon Archery Manufacturing and see what you get).

Far as I know, Randy's still making bows. Scratch that. Still making INCREDIBLE bows. I have a custom Hawk recurve he made me in 1994 that I'd put up against any bow, anywhere, from any time. Impeccable glue lines and craftsmanship, extremely smooth, stable, and suprisingly fast. I'll never sell it. I may ask him if he can reduce the draw weight on it a little when it's time to refinish, though.

I've heard that the level of craftsmanship he puts into the non-custom series is just as high as on custom bows. I don't think you can go wrong with any Saxon, but if you get a chance to shoot one of his customs, do it. Service-wise Randy's never been anything but great to deal with for me. I heard a while back he was having some health problems, but I had not heard anything about him retiring.

I have a 60" Kadiak that is a beauty. It is the best performer all around that I own, and like Charlie, I found Randy a pleasure to deal with. Whwn I talked to him last-early this year- he had moved back to Washington state to be near his aging parents. I personally think my Saxon is a great value and the workmanship is outstanding.                       Grant

I must have ordered my bow at a bad time..... That however does not excuse the foul language he used towards me when I questioned why he would send me a subpar bow. Long story short I won't buy from him again and would hate to see anyone go through what I did. If it was not for buying through VISA, I would have never gotten my money back. Glad you guys had good luck but I did not! I have pictures I took of the bow he sent me..... Enough said.

If you want a 50's style bow, try Northern Mist.... Short recurve, try Black Widow's PSR.

Let the buyer beware!

I had a similar issue during email and phone conversations with him.  I was asking questions about his Kadiak when he went off on me.  "Who was I to ask him questions" was the main point of his tirade.  His wife sent me an email a few days later apologizing, but I have been "cured" of dealing with him.

I know he makes nices bows, but I will not be treated like that by anyone that wants my money.
