With all the pics of the piebald deer going around, I thought I'd introduce something I thought was legend. Alot of the neighbors have told me about a white squirrel living up the street. This rumor has been going around for 5 or 6 years I think. Well today on the way home from work, I stop at the stop sign and, lo and behold there he sits! I snapped a pic or two with my cell phone and cruise home to get my good camera, and I can't find it! Come to find out that it was in the center console of my truck the whole time! :banghead: By the time I got back, he'd vanished into thin air. I could say I have evidence, but with the crappy pics my cell takes, it may as well be a stuffed animal! Here's the best one, check it out.

Very rare indeed
I have 3 of them in my neiborhood.
There is always SOMEONE...!
Bret, are you sure that's not litter? :knothead: :biglaugh:
We had one at our archery club for a number of years, but she has evidently gone to that Big Nuthouse in the Sky. I miss her, as she was easy to follow as I watched it go about its squirrelly business.
I read somewhere that there is a town full of them, protected and all. Kinda like white deer, normally quite rare but in places they are encouraged and thrive. We have a lot of solid black ones, but not white.
Killdeer
There is a town here in West Tn called Rutherford that is loaded with white squirrels. No kidding, the police cars (both of them) have a white squirrel on them. Go figure.
Neat, We have alot of black ones as well, never seen a white one
I've seen at least one on nearly every college campus I've visited. The U of Rochester had about a 50:50 mix of grey and mostly white (just a patch of brown on the shoulders) Only a few true white ones though. Cool critters to watch!

Not sure if its the one you've heard about, but Marionville, MO used to have a bunch... I drove through there going to work. They even had a billboard with, "Home of the White squirrel."
Marionville, MO is the home of the white squirrel. The have a bunch. As far as I know they aren't protected but I don't think anyone hunts them either.
I remember reading Gene Wensels opinion about whether or not piebald deer should be protected. He told of some hunters that thought it was unlucky to kill one so they never shot one when they had the opportunity. Gene's thoughts were that they are not what they should be and should not be propigating. They should be shot when ever possible.
I wonder if he has an opinion about white squirrels?
:D
The University of Louisville has a population that has been around for 100 years or so. They are very intelligent by now :)
That is pretty cool!!! Seen quite a few while I lived in NC but never had any desire to hunt them. Enjoyed having them around the deer stand as they were very comical in their daily routines.
There is a place called the Prarie Homestead close to the entrance of the Badlands National Park here in SD. In addition to having a well restored sod home and other interesting artifacts they have a booming population of pure white prarie dogs. I know I took some pictures but I think that was before I had a digital camera. If I find any I will post them.
Thats pretty cool. I saw my first black one just the other day at work. I am hoping for a pic next time. Between the black squirrels, the racoons who want to fight, the fawns all over, and the bears...I need to have a camera on me at all times.
Google "Olney Illinois"... there, white squirrels are protected with a ferocity akin to a sow grizzly defending her cubs.
My buddy Norb Schultz (beachbowhunter) has a photo he took of a white fox squirrel and a black fox squirrel feeding together...pretty cool.
