Title: Arrow Weight Question
Post by: tmitche1 on June 23, 2008, 07:18:00 PM
Currently, I'm shooting Gold Tip 3555 with a weight of 8.6 gpi.  I shoot 28.5" arrows with 145 grain Magnus 2-blade.  My arrow weight is right around 400 lbs.  My recurve is 54lbs @27".  For larger game such as elk, should I go up in arrow weight.  If so, do you have any arrow recommendations?  I have heard good things about the Beman MFX Classics.

If I interpret your post correctly 400 gr arrow with a 54# bow yields 7.4 grains per pound, light for what most bowyers suggest for there bows.

I would think 400 gr would be on the light side for a large critter like elk. The Easton axis arrow in 400 spine with 200 gr up front (+ aluminum insert) will get you around 500 gr total at 30" and should be pretty close to tuned. The beaman mfx will add a little more. The axis 340 with 300 gr up front (200 point + 100 gr brass insert) 30" would also be close and get your weight to around 610 gr. I love the small diameter shaft for hunting and am looking forward to punishing one of the new axis nano's to see how tough it is.

I forget about the grains per inch and prefer to shoot for around 9-10 grains per pound of draw weight. This seems to give me the best performance out of my bows.

I am with woodslinger,10grs per # is a good balance.Elk,11/12grs per # would be my choice.

For elk?   A lot heavier than 400 grains.  Try to get 600 grains minimum with two blade head.

I agree at least 600gr 650 to 700 would be better 400 way light even for Whitetails   :knothead:

I killed a large cow elk with a 410gr arrow - 600 gr would not have made her any deader.
