I have made some selfbows and some BBO bows but got away from all that for a while when I got a fiberglass longbow. One of the last bows I made was a BBO bow according to Dean Torges video. I backed it with a piece of bamboo that he gave me at Cloverdale a few years ago when I introduced him to my children and he said to make a bow for my son. I have had it out and shooting it lately and not too badly I might add! I'm thinking I might try to take a deer this season with it and a cane arrow tipped with a stone point.
I think I'm going to name the bow Princess Mononoke (Mow-no-no-kay). He used to like alot of that Japanese animation and this is a movie he liked.
This bow will have a lot of mojo for me. I will keep you all posted on updates if you are interested.
Absolutely, keep us up to date. If you have any questions regarding boo arras, just ask away. Tim
I would like it if you keep me posted on updates, please. Do you have any pictures of the bow? I would really like to see them if you do. Thanks.
Very touching...keep us posted on how your hunts are going. Sounds like you will have lots of mojo on your side as well.
CS
Keep us updated... I like that movie... i think miyazaki did that one. all of his movies are outstanding!
May the comfort of a sunrise as seen from a treestand warm your heart, may the sound of running water in the forest stir the energy in you to continue to live, and may your love for your son give you peace.
Paulie
That gave me chills Paulie. Thank you.
I am making some changes to the bows grip. I will post pics soon.
Sounds like there is a lot of Mojo there.
Good Luck this fall!
The bow that I made for my Grandson before his untimely departure hangs in a special place on my wall. Each time I hold the bow in my hand I can almost feel his presence. The pain of loosing him never seems to lessen even though it's been a tad over four years now. Each of us seek healing, and find a measure of release in the best manner that we can. I can sympathize with you in a way that some folks can't. I wish you the best in the making of this bow, for I know what it must mean to you. May God guide your hands Brother.
 "may your bow bring much mojo"
God bless you and yours
Looking foward to hearing more.
That bow will definitely be something special. I look forward to hearing about the adventures you'll have with it.
Ray ;)
A very special way to be close to your son. Few parents these days have a way to maintain those bonds like this. Thank you and please continue to share.
Sarah
I don't know the whole story, but as a parent, I imagine it would bring both a tear to my eye and a smile to my face. I believe any memory of your son you take to the woods would make each sunrise that much more special. God's Peace. Steve
DEFINITLY keep us posted! Lots of luck and MOJO for you!

Steve and others said it well. Keep us posted.
Way to go B, :clapper: cant wait to hear of it.
P.
I'm here at work and have a minute. Have you ever noticed how work seems to get in the way? I had a minute to shoot a few arrows before getting ready and the first three arrows made quite a nice group! Shooting left a little for some reason. The handle of the bow felt a little square where my thumb joint rested so I had filed a dip for that area to rest in. But I think I need to take a little more off because I think I was torquing the bow, causing the arrows to fly left.
I have some pics and will post them when I get home. I was shooting some poc arrows footed with purple heart made by Wildcat Canyon Archery.
I also have a pic of the possible handle wrap. It is braintan moose. It may be too thick to feel right. I might go with some braintan deer. It would be alot thinner and I could feel the thumb placement easier.
Oh, BTW, if anyone knows a an easy and inexpensive way to spine arrows, please let me know. I would like to see what spine my rivercane shafts are. I remember seeing an article in either TBM or Primitive Archer magazine but it could take me awhile to find it. I'm sure it's been a few years ago that I saw it.
You might have to weight the ends of those cane arrows to get them to bend a little more around that handle. Am looking forward to hearing more about your adventures....God bless you. One day we will get to spend that time with those who have left us behind.
do a search here on cheap spine tester...I remember seeing how to make one for around $10. Come to think, it may be in the build along forum.
And keep us posted
Here's a link on building one style of spine tester...

trapperDave, I checked the build-a-long first, if one is there, I missed it. But I'm good at missing things!
:D
TomK, thanks for the links. I will check them out.
Hectic day! Worked last night but didn't sleep until afternoon, I was too excited! Got pics down loaded, will post later tonite.
Checked the poundage on the bow. Lower than I remembered, I had not marked it on the bow. Just over legal minimum at 36 lbs. at my draw of 26". I knew it was light (I normally shoot 47#), but I thought it was closer to 40.

Here are some pics of the bow. I had put elk antler on the tips and tried to get a shot of that. Hope it is clear enough.
Ok... Not what I had intended. Try again.

First three shots at 15 yds. Nice group but shooting left. Like I said earlier, I think I was torquing the bow.

These are of the handle where I made the indention for my thumb. I went with the deer buckskin, it's thin and easier to find the "locator".

Here is an arrow that I had put a stone point on some time ago. It is on a POC tapered shaft from Wildcat Canyon Archery. Milt makes beautiful arrows. It was center punching this bag target at 15 yds. It is 27", 425 gr., and has a FOC of 14%. I think the point is around 100-125 gr. prob. purchased from 3RA.
The white fletched arrows are also POC from WCA. Tapered and footed with purpleheart. With a 125 gr. point it is 530 gr. with an FOC of 17.5% and is 28". They were center punching the target also.
I plan to inscribe the name etc. tonight and christen it so to speak with cedar smoke tomorrow.
Then I will work on the cane shafts and see what I can come up with. My best friends son is now hooked since going to Cloverdale on Sat. and needs a bow to call his own. I have a pc. of bamboo 3/4 prepped for backing, a hickory board stave I had started to make into a selfbow and some chunks of walnut that should make good handle sections. I feel like making another boo backed bow!
Busy, busy, busy!! (Plus pick up hay, sell the pigs, got to sqeeze in some shooting, mail a package, I would like to get to Compton for a while...)
:jumper:
Well, I got the bow's name put on it and I christened it in cedar smoke, saying a little prayer. I have worked on a cane arrow also and I'm running into some snags. The footing that I took off some broken shafts are too big for the cane and I'm having trouble getting the cane straight enough. I think I might just use some POC arrows instead with a stone point like the one in the photo. Will try to post more pics tomorrow.

God bless you and your family! I donated a bow in Dad honor as well... May his spirt that is in the bow guide your hand.
All thebest mate with the on comming season. Some mojo there all right.
My heart will go out to you after the pass through and you walk upon your son's deer.
AK.
Thanks you guys. Hey Al, I see you have a story in the TBM that I got today! Haven't had a chance to read it yet.
Here is an arrow that I got to the point of shooting today. Bare shaft, and as I predicted to myself, it is way too stiff spined. It is looking pretty cool thought. With a stone point and some feathers, it will look good. Trying to thing of what kind of decoration to put on it. If anyone has a suggestion, let me know.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v210/BonaGlass/Cloverdaleselfbow068.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v210/BonaGlass/Cloverdaleselfbow067.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v210/BonaGlass/Cloverdaleselfbow066.jpg)
I must say I was touched by your story, b.glass. That is a beautiful bow built in loving tribute to your son. My his memory be eternal. George
Thank you George.
I've started work on arrow no. two. A smaller dia. cane, hoping it will be weaker spined. Problem here is that the smaller dia. makes it more difficult to "splice" a hardwood foreshaft and have enough material to make a groove to accept the stone point.
Plan: To make the foreshaft tapered with enough on one end to support the point but small enough on the other end to "splice" into the cane.
(http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v210/BonaGlass/Cloverdaleselfbow079.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v210/BonaGlass/Cloverdaleselfbow081.jpg) (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v210/BonaGlass/Cloverdaleselfbow082.jpg)
Second arrow completed.
This one is too weak spined. But just by a little. I may cut the sinew at the splice and cut a little off the foreshaft. It is a little crooked but spins nicely. It is 630gr. with a 125gr point and an osage foreshaft, horn nock. I want to put some artwork on these arrows. If anyone has a suggestion let me know.
god bless ya b.glass and may the spirit of the wolf keep you safe and watch over you.
jeff
Thank you Jeff.
I have decided to go with Wildcat Canyon arrow shafts spined at around 40lbs., tapered and footed with purple heart. With a 160gr. point it flies nicely and has a little over 19% FOC. It is weighing in at about 550gr. I don't think that's too bad for a 37-38lb BBO bow. What do some of you think about this combo?
I plan to keep trying for a cane arrow that would be appropriate but will have these I I can't get the primitive arrow I want.
I still plan to put stone points on them but will have some grizzlies ready too.
B.
What is wrong with your other cane arrows that is preventing you from using them? They look great, and unless they fly wild, I'd think they'd make for nice addition in your quiver. Tim
Tim,
I'm still going to work on the cane arrows. But the other shafts are flying so well that I thought I would have Milt work some of these up for me as back up if I can't get what I want from my cane shafts. They are so labor intensive it is going very slowly. So far one too stiff and one too weak. I was thinking it would be nice to have a lathe to work down my foreshafts.
But I'm glad to hear that you like them!
Can you chuck the foreshafts in a drill and sand them to where you need em?
I did use a belt sander and got them along a good bit quicker that way. I just held them by hand. If not for thaat it would have taken forever.
I'm just back from the U.P. of Michigan for the family vacation. We have been up there several times over the years and really enjoy it. I was able to pick up some articles of wool clothing at a thrift store. 100% wool suit jackets for .50 cents a piece! Also got a plaid shirt and a sweater marked down at a gift shop also 100% wool. Looked over the moose range too.
I was at the Heartland Bow Jam on Sat. Trying to finish up my friends sons bow. Then back to working on primitive arrows
I finished the bow for my friends son. I am pleased with it even though it cracked at the handle. I don't know if my repair will hold but I will explain to him to stop pulling immediately if he hears cracking and I will try a better repair.
I worked on the arrow that was spined too weak, taking about an inch off of the foreshaft and it shoots beautifully! I will go through my cane shafts and see if I can find at least two more that might work.
I mentioned this in another thread, but I have acquired several articles of wool clothing that I plan to hunt in with this bow and primitive arrows. One shirt is a brown plaid, 80% wool shirt that was my dads. I plan to find some wool to make legg'ns to wear with an indian style skirt.
way to go Bona!! :clapper: yall have to post pics
Thanks for the support Jeff! I will post some pix. I put a snakeskin cresting, like Ferret shows on another thread, on the one I have ready. Not as craftful as his but functional and kinda perty.
I'm thinking about using my wool blanket to make leggings. It is a blue trade blanket.
I was wondering, do deer see blue better than other colors? On the bottles of "camo" detergent that I have bought, I shows that deer see the hunter better that is wearing clothes washed with blueing added.

The bow I just finished for my best friends son.
That is awesome! You have some talent there young lady.
Sweet!!
Whats the 2 lil blue thingies on that scrap of leather?
THAT IS (http://i259.photobucket.com/albums/hh305/jeffburg/awesomesmiley.gif) BONA!!!
wolfman jeff
Kenny, those are turquoise beads. I put one on the handle of the bow with the leftover cordage from the lacing.
Thanks guys! I'm glad you like it!
 fantastic, you are a talented young lady
Beautiful work. Your attention to detail is great and it really shows in your work. I'm sure your friends son is one happy boy. Keep it up, and keep posting. Tim
Looks real nice Bona. When you get a chance PM me your address and I will send that piece of leather for your bow handle.
Yes Tim he is thrilled with it. I have given him a few arrows that are working out great for him and his bow. Also gave him some Woodsman BH and a file to sharpen them and a BH quiver.
Sorry, I just realized I called you Tim. That's my youngest ones name! Thank you JIM. I'll get my address to you.
I just recieved a package from Bill Skinner with a gift of cane for arrows and EIGHT of his stone points!!! He told be he was going to send me some but I had no idea! They are beautiful! And to go out on a hot Alabama day and cut rivercane to give away! You people are amazing, and right there is one more example!
Was trying to put pix up but I have to go. The process is taking too much time.

Looks like some mighty fine arrow makings there.
Mighty fine gesture there Mr. Bill Skinner
October 1st is fast approaching. I've picked up several wool sweaters at thrift stores and a couple pair of wool pants but they are pretty thin. I plan to order some heavier wool pants from L.L.Bean this week, then I should be all set. Finishing up some more arrows too.
Firt hunt of the season:
I have some problems at work. And after working three 12 hr. shifts (nights) I go to a friends and talk for several hrs. When I get home in the afernoon, I notice my dog has not come out to see me at the car. She is standing at the bottom of the steps to the porch and her back, right leg is dangling oddly. She has evidently been hit by a car and her leg is broken! She is at the vet and her leg should be pinned by now.
I have some sleep to catch up on, but it will have to wait. I was able to get up and out before light. But in all the commotion I forgot my camera. I went back about 9 o'clock and got it so I will add picks as if I had it from the start.
I get to the blind that I built last spring and settle in.
God bless you.
Very nice thread Mr. Glass.
Roy, I'm a Mrs. Don't worry about it, happens all the time!
Thanks guys.
First off let me tell you, my husband has cut the soybeans off the field and I don't have to go around it anymore! It's only about 500 yds as the crow flies.
He hates morning glory but they are pretty!
God Bless You & Your Family.
I don't think I put enough burnt cork on my face.
Here is my blind that I built last spring. Can you see my bow with nocked arrow to just left of center?
My view from inside the blind. There is a deep ditch to the right where there is a well used crossing. Our prevailling wind is out of the SW here so I can only hunt this spot with a N, NW or NE wind. We have a NW wind today.
This shows my primitive arrows in the deer hide quiver I made several years ago according to Jay Massey's instructions in one of the Bowyers Bibles. You can also see the black plastic stuff (I think it's used as a snow break), I used as a base for the blind. I weaved vegitation through the holes then piled stuff up in front of it, and secured it with a few stakes.
It was a much cooler morning. I had on the morino wool underwear I got from 3RA, 200 series. I think I will need the 400 series. I also wore a lite wool sweater and wool dress pants from GW, my 1812 period cotton shirt with a hand woven sash. I took my dad's wool blend brown plaid shirt along in case I needed it. I had my wool socks on from Jeff in New Zealand and the knife he gave me on the sash. The only camo I had on was the extra long armquard that I like so well and my knee boots. There was a pretty good breeze and I got a little chilly but not too bad! This is the first time I have not hunted in camo. And the first time in some time that I was hunting with a primitive bow and arrows.
As I'm sitting there a couple of raccoons walk behind me. The first one walks past my scent stream then comes back sticking his nose up in the air, sniff'n, then wanders off unconcerned. The next hits my scent and immediately sticks his nose in the air. He took several seconds think'n and sniff'n then slowly turns and goes back the way he came.
Not long after that I went to the house to get the camera. When I got back I tried to get a picture of the ditch crossing but I don't hold hutter button down long enough on these digital cameras sometimes and I didn't get it. BUT, in the process of doing this I spooked a deer. I saw a flash of white and it didn't sound like dainty feet pounding the dirt to get out of there!
Picture of our son that sits on the counter.
Keep it coming.
I leave for Illinois tomorrow after I make sure the dog gets back home alright.
Me and Jasmine.
Thanks for sharing your hunt and pics.
Have a great hunt in Illinois.
bhfp
Poor pooch! I hope she is OK. Mine is a surrogate daughter.
I am enjoying this whole journey, Bona, and am in awe of your accomplishments. Yes...more cork. Enough to scare any trespassers.
Killdeer :wavey:
Just got back from Illinois. My youngest ended up going with me. I had a blast! He had a pretty good time too
way to go Bona neat story.
We were by a soybean field the second morning. The first day was uneventful. I saw a buck come across the field some 40 yds away and go into the trees. After some time, I was looking back into the woods and saw a couple of raccoons going up the other side of the ravine. When out of nowhere a buck comes bounding up the ravine, RIGHT TOWARDS US!! If he had kept his course I would have been able to swat him on the rump as he went by our tree! He had a white rack as wide as his ears when alert but with 8 shortish tines. His brow tines were probably 2". But he looked magnificant! He stopped at 10-12 yds before going off into the beans again. I didn't have a buck tag!
Sounds like you had a great hunt shared with your son. Doesn't get any better than that.
bhfp
now thats way cool Bona!! now you should go get a buck tag. :clapper: :biglaugh: ya going to have to take some pics cant have a story with out pics. keep it comming
That evening we went out to the same soybean field but set up further to the west closer to where I saw the buck cross the field. The light was fading and I knew we were getting closer to seeing some action. When a doe crosses the field and turns to the left offering a quartering away shot at 15 yds. But the shot would have been a split second decistion and I don't have that kind of experience of confidence. I needed her to come to our right where I would have had atleast a few seconds to take a quartering shot.
A few min. later I heard leaves russel from behind my son from the direction the doe went. I had him bring his Game Boy and noticed the light when I looked that way. I whispered to turn it off! Out steps a huge raccoon! Just two feet from Tim! Tim looked down at Rocky... and Rocky looked up at Tim... then Rocky turned and scurried off!
A memorable hunt for all of us!!
:jumper: :jumper: now thats way funny
Trying to keep costs down. To shoot a buck and/or doe as a non-resident of Ill. cost like $450.00. I only had about $200 in this trip which included license, doe tag, and fuel.
I've been invited back for later in the season when the crops are off!
I'll try again to get some pics up.
cant waite.Bona :coffee: :coffee:

That's great stuff right there Gal!!!
Those of us who have lost a child and are living the "new normal" lives know the pain we deal with day in and day out. It is unlike any other form of mourning one must deal with and we are all unfortunate members of an exclusive club and if given a choice none of us would want to be members or wish it on others.
I hope using that bow brings some degree of light and peace back into your life!!!!!
hey Bona ya cant hide from me i see ya standing in front of the tree :biglaugh: :biglaugh: good pics is he a good camp cook?
Thanks all! He was a pretty good cook but was only good for about one meal! He loved keeping the campfire going though.
Whump Sez: Thanks for taking the time to post this ----very nice! Hunt safe.
Hope you get one soon! Can't wait for the details.
Thanks Wump and Katie. I'm feeling good about this year! (I always start out that way). But I have a tough situation here where I usually hunt on my neighbors property and it is only getting worse as the three boys that live there get older. I'm happy for them to have such a childhood that allows them the roam the woods to play instead of playing in the streets. But it sure plays havoc with trying to pattern deer!
I usually like to hunt evenings but I'm starting to go out more in mornings while they are at school. I haven't been able to get out but once since Ill. because of work constrants.
i hope ya get one soon Bona good luck. :wavey:
I`ve been following this all along...WOW!
ttt
I haven't been able to get out since getting back from Illinios but it looks like it's going to happen this weekend! Plans are for Sat. evening, Sun evening and Mon morning and evening. Maybe Tues. morning also. But just because I plan this doesn't mean it's gonna happen.
Good luck b.glass. Hope you get one for your boy!
I hope you are sitting a great stand. It is pretty and cool down here, I just got home from work. Druther be in a stand on my own farm! Hmm. Make a note...get own farm. :banghead:
Killdeer :archer:
Good luck Bona!!
Killy,ya kill me!!
Killdeer, we were about thiiiis close to getting our own woodlot about 14 acres and it could have worked out to where it would have ajoined our current property but the guys grandson talked him out of it. Darn! All the property we have is farm ground with very little that is huntable, especially when my husband keeps cleaning out the fence rows! EEERRR! I try to get him to compromise and just cut the limbs back but he has to take out the trees!
b.glass- make your husband leave you a bit of crops. My neighbor left a stand of corn because it was too muddy to get it out. Holy cow-best food plot ever!
Hey katie, we've tried that before, didn't seem to help me. It's hard to get him to remember things like that sometimes but he has remembered a time or two.
Well my weekend was a bust! Hunted while Hubby harvested corn on some rental prop. Saw a doe but not close enough. I had thrown on a camo jacket with pockets stuffed with gloves and mask. I had a bow in the back of the truck and grabbed it while waiting for wagons to fill.
Creeped along a mostly dried up creek bed. I have permission to hunt there but don't much due to the fact that the guys gives everyone who asks permisssion to hunt. We've never seen anyone there while harvesting but we do see tree stands, stools etc. It was cool just being out in the woods again.
That was Sat. night. Sunday night I was in the woods next door. I didn't get out until about 5:30. It had been a rough day dealing with technology so it was really nice to be out in the woods. When it gets too dark to shoot I usually start to pack it in, but I wasn't ready to leave the tranquility. The stars were out and the night time forrest creatures were stirring, when I hear something crossing the creek 50yds to the east. Has to be deer I'm thinking, and it was, I saw the form of two deer walk along the edge of the woods some 25 yds to the south of me. I heard more deer cross the ditch but never saw them.
Monday morning I hunted a fence row where they walk to get to a bedding area. I didn't see anything but nearly froze to death.
Monday night. I sat closer to where the deer would cross the ditch in case they did the same thing as the night before. I didn't see anything until I stood up. The silouette of a deer bounded into the woods. I think these deer are nocturnal.
Well my husband called to tell me that there is a doe that was hit along the road last night. The traffic is slowed down since school as started for the day. I might go get her. The freezer is low and I hate to see her go to waste. :)
Jeff, I used your knife on that doe and I REALLY like it! Thanks again for such a nice gift!
you are most welcome Bona i am glad ya like it say hi to the family.
Hey, guess what I found out! According to the Campfire Philosopher in TBM, Dave Sigurslid, I'm "superior" to all of yous who are constantly killing animals while hunting! (You do know I'm kidding, right?) :p
I'm going hunting!
Nice looking Footed Arrows in that 3D target! Did you make the shafts?
Good luck!
Tom I believe the only footed arrows I've ever had were from Wildcat Canyon Archery. The man's name is on the tip of my tongue. He's making another dozen for me but his footing resource is limited so it's taking him a while. I will post pics when they get here. I ordered his top of the line arrows this time. The workmanship can't get any better and it's hard to believe they can be any more beautiful. I can hardly wait to see them. They will be fletched with the hunter style feathers that Herb Haines sells. The colors will be grey and crimison red.
Thanks katie! But as luck would have it, again I saw not hide, hair, nor shadowy form of a deer. I was entertained by a huge flock of starlings. There had to be atleast 2000 birds in this group. I believe they were playing scherades (sp). First they were a black cloud, then they were leaves on the otherwise bare trees. But my favorite game was the black wave. They landed in the small field a few at a time and as the last ones landed the ones at the back would fly forward of the pack in a wave like motion.
They would land in the trees around me and I could hear "things" dropping to the dry leaves. Wondered when I would catch one on top of the head. When they took off in unison it sounded like a wave crashing into the shore.
The wool is doing a good job of keeping me warm. I had three layers on last night. My husband was tilling the fields up wind but nothing came my way. The very best time to hunt that spot is when he is harvesting the crops in those fields. I had a dozen deer around me the first year. And last year he drove that bruiser to me that savagely attacked a tree not 10 yds from my hide!
I was hunting 40 yds down wind of a fresh scrape and rub. And I was out plenty early. I'm thinking about trying public land, and I'm always trying for landowner permission.

Sounds nice. I use Chartreuse feathers with a chartreuse wrap to make them easier for me to see.
Tom
Put a chartreuse tracer on that also and you will have a combo that looks like a lazer light!
I saw an eight point buck 200 yds from our yard tonight on the property I hunt at about 5pm. I had to work but called in sick. Worked with a sick co-worker on Sat. and Sun. and guess what! It's the first deer all year that I've seen on this property in the day light.
He wasn't a monster but was still exciting to see.
BEST OF LUCK!! GIT 'ER DONE!!
Thanks Harv!
I hunted a few times this weekend with no luck. Took a couple of shots at squirels and missed low. Turns out my tied on nock had slipped up. Put on a sturdier serving type nock so that shouldn't happen again. I would hate to shoot at a deer with it like that.
Milt Been of Wildcat Canyon Archery sent me the arrows I ordered when I wasn't sure I was going to get my primitives going. He sent me nine arrows free of charge because he couldn't get them footed like I wanted. And he used some crimson barred feathers he was saving for something "special". What a guy!
I posted pictures on another thread but here is one shot.

WOW!!!!! Bona those are real nice
When I got home from work yesterday morning I got online for a few then showered and went to the woods. I slept for about three hours and then hunted. All I saw was a ground hog. It nearly walked over the toe of my boot, going back to his den that I found the other day. I should have reached down and touched his fur as he walked under the log I was sitting on. Have I mentioned how much I like this Shaggie coat?
I was expected to go to a birthday dinner so I had to leave just before magic time. My husband came back on the four wheeler to get me. I decided to play a little so I didn't move. He couldn't find me til I waved at him.
I have next week off. I plan to devote a lot of time to the hunt. I have invited a fellow trad bow hunter to hunt with me on this property. He had told me the owners had offered to let him hunt it but he had turned down the offer because he knew that I hunted it. He was pleased with the offer. Turns out he doesn't have much land to hunt on. We will probably do some tag team calling. He invited me to use his bow forms and such to make a fiberglass bow quite some time ago and I just kinda got a hanker'n to make a glass bow so I will be doing that but probably after deer season.
The weather here is going to turn cool and rainy next week so with all things considered, I'm expecting some good hunting!
You go Gal!!! The time and weather are right!!
Blueline
Good luck! Hope this is your week.
Your gonna connect Katie, you got a little boy pray'n for ya! That's so sweet.
I hope you get lucky with it and in doing so remember only the good things about the time you had with him. Good Luck
That is just awesome. Thanks for sharing a little bit of your hunt. Jawge
I haven't been on for an update because there hasn't been much to tell. Bunnys, sguirrels, and birds up close and personal with me in my shaggie suit. No deer. Until last night. No shot offered but good to see my quarry. Young buck at twilight came my way but turned off the route that would have brought him past me. He went through a small patch of trees in front of me but too far and stopped for only a second looking my way when I used my grunt tube. Tried doe bleats too but didn't take the bait. (So to speak). He toyed with my emotions for several minutes, going so far then turning and coming back again. Ended up exiting stage left. I have a plan to be there tonight but further down the line at a spot before he likes to turn off. He's made a trail there so I should be able to find the spot I want. Where I set up last night had tracks, droppings, trails and rubs. First time hunting this area. My usual place is getting worse. The neighbor further north just put up some fence bisecting the area I hunt.
Just some side notes:
I will not be taking my son's bow out tonight. It's raining pretty good and the finish turned white in a few spots from getting wet some how while I was in Illinois.
I was joking with my husband about getting a sign about the number 4. I told him to use the number 4 if he played the lottery at all yesterday. He played the daily 4, chose the numbers 1313 because of a receipt after buying gas, which if you notice adds up to 4 and 4. He didn't win. But the winning number was 4313! The buck I saw may have been a 4 pt.
I had a bad dream this morning about hunting the buck I saw last night. To make a long, weird story short. He turned out to be a moose. I woke up wondering how much trouble I was in. We don't have moose in Indiana, let alone a season for them!
If you don't have a season for them, then chances are there is no law protecting them. I say, shoot the moose!
Maybe it means a "moose like" buck will be heading your way this eve.
"I say, shoot the moose!" Katie
I like the way you think Katie!
Unfortunately, I didn't see anything. But I plan to keep trying!
That is how it's done, Bona. You will connect, because you have the drive!
Killdeer
I have an old man that lives down my road. He swears up and down that he has seen a moose in his yard many times. I am thinking it might be my monster buck. But have to take him on his word and hope it is a moose in Iowa! He,he.
"I say, shoot the moose!" :archer: :biglaugh:
I think I may have gotten his picture today. The moose that is.
Katie,
Is that the "moose" in that other thread you have out there? I can see how he could be mistaken for one!
On the last day of firearms season my husband and I were walking down the road when I saw a deer across the field near the woods. Then we realized it was a buck. He proceeded to walk into the woods where trees had been removed a few years ago. It had grown up with 5-6 ft. of small trees.
The buck stood in there for so long that hubby and I decided to try for it. We hot footed it to the house, I got my shaggie suit on and arm quard. I already had my bow and arrows.
I took off across the field near the house and hubby went back down the road. The plan was to get into position quickly and he would attempt to push the buck to me.
The buck evidently saw him coming across and took off through the woods and onto the neighboring property.
There is now a week of no hunting allowed. I believe Sat. the 6th starts our late archery season.
It ain't over yet!
You are going to get one! You have grit for going out in this cold stuff. I have been camped in next to the woodstove with a book! Our early bow split ends on Fri. A few weeks of shotgun then we can go back out w/ the bows till mid Jan. sometime. Just hard to pull a string when you have that many layers on. I may take up the gun to get a doe on the table. Cheating, I know. But we got to eat!!!
Good luck Girl!
Katie
Thanks Katie! It was fun to have my husband involved a little bit. He went out a few times with a gun this year. I think he was trying to show me how easy it should be! He never saw anything either.
Don't you just love those woodstoves!
:campfire: :coffee:
I was looking for another thread and found this one. I couldn't find it when I was looking for it.
No deer killed by me. But a successful year none the less.
Thank you to all who followed along.
Bona
May the bow be strong and steady, like your faith. May the arrows departing it fly straight and true, like your love. May the days you carry it be joyous and numerous, and may it remind all who lay eye on it of the magic, wonder, and brevity of life. Make every moment matter, forgive yourself and others for the moments you missed, and holdfast to the promise that is given; you'll meet your son on God's golden shore and no doubt he will be grateful for the bow you've made in his honor!
