Title: Any Tradgangers near North-Central Iowa?
Post by: Sarah on June 16, 2008, 01:28:00 PM
Beginner here, been shooting for a few weeks.

I hadn't even seen anyone else shoot traditional until the Coon Rapids shoot on Saturday.

Anyone in my area want to meet up to shoot and give me some pointers? I'll bake you some cookies for your troubles...  :)

Tempting to travel the 3 hours for cookies, but too much claim work with the flooding here. I know there are some folks down around Des Moines and Ames. Keep at it and have fun.

Sarah - Where bouts in PA are you from and are you returning.

There are a lot of tradionalists and traditional shoots in western PA and eastern Ohio.

The Coleta (IL) Traditional shoot is 25 minutes East of Clinton Iowa....July 12, 13th.  Smaller shoot, but growing....it's nice not to be crowded on a course.  This would be a great place to learn, they have a club house and a practice range.   I'm sure you'd get plenty of help there.   You're welcome to shoot with my group, but not sure which day we'll be there yet.

Sarah, what town are you in/near?
My wife and I live in far NW Iowa so we're not exactly in your area but we do occasionally get to Hampton to visit friends.  Hopefully one of the other trad folks in IA or MN sees the thread and chimes in.
There is also going to be another trad shoot in MN, according to the Events Forum...

That would be a bit of a drive for you, but looks like it will be a good time.

Sarah,
There is a trad shoot the 5th and 6th in Ottumwa.  I will be attending and you are more taht welcome to shoot with us.  By chance do you know Matt Shappell?  He is a young man from here in Mount Pleasant and shares a similar occupation as you.

Zbone: I hail from State College in central PA (football, anyone?    ;) ).

Morning Star: Clinton is a bit far for me. I would have loved to shoot with you though! Keep me posted.

mrkbsm: I'm up in Lake Mills. The shoot in August might be the weekend before I leave here...We'll see.

Lefty: Of July? Don't know Matt, does he work for the DNR? I'm pretty much a mule for these folks anyway...

Anyone within carpooling range for some of these shoots that are a bit far for me?

-Clinton, IA
-Ottumwa, IA
-Tracy, IA

I'm going to the Lakeville, MN shoot in a week and a half. Quite stoked!

Keep the responses coming, everybody. I still don't have a shooting buddy!

Hey Sarah,
How far from Rochester are you? I missed the Coon Rapids shoot this year, how was it.

You might check out Albert Lea, MN. They did have an archery club, might still have it, and probably would have traditional shooters there. I believe you're very close by.

If you get to Rochester, the Footed Shaft is a must visit for all trad archers.

Rochester is an hour a half away. (Yes, I've been to the Footed Shaft, Lamont is great!)

Coon Rapids was good, made one mistake in that I brought a friend of mine who shoots compound and he was pretty snotty about it.

Albert Lea is very close...Thanks, I'll check it out.

There is is a club in Albert lea, full draw archery club.We have an indoor range in the downtown area and hold several 3D shoots (one traditional only) every winter. Unfortunatly we do not have an outdoor range so no summer shoots. This weekend (21st and 22nd) the cedar river archery club in Austin MN is having a 3D shoot. I have shot there several times and they do put on a very good shoot. It is my understanding that they had some flooding at the range but they are still running there shoot this weekend. I was told to be prepaired for lots of mud and bugs. My wife and kids and I will be there sunday.

Mark:  PM sent.

Anyone else headed to the Austin shoot in MN this weekend? I don't see anything about it in the Trad Events forum...

I'm in Austin and never shot at the Cedar River club, as I thought it was mainly compound guys. It's 6 miles North of town. Until I took off time for grad school, I did all of my shooting 8 miles West of town on land my brother owns. There's nothing like a private range:-)

We've had such dry weather of late that the club grounds should have dried out well. A far cry from last week's 14" of river water in the basement of the apartment building I live in!

I was just in Iowa last week for work.  I'll probably be back next week. Hauling concrete to the Windmill farm between Algona and Forest City.
I thought about calling Jason Kendall Of J.K. Traditions. He lives in Forest City where we were staying. Just did'nt have time to do much other than work.

Sarah,
LMCHIEF is a stand up guy and one of the best shots I have ever seen. He would  have had an elk this year if a tree branch wasn't in the way. Oh, he makes great knifes too!

J.K. Traditions is  Jason Kendall.  He builds short hybrid longbows under the name Kanati. He used to build the Kabakoma River longbows, until he changed the design a little.
I met him at a shoot in Mn. a few years ago and shot a couple of his bows. They were very nice shooting bows. I think one was a 58" and the other was 56" very smooth even at a 29" draw.

I'll be back in Forest City on monday the 30th for the week. Don't know how much free tome I'll have in the evening. I also won't have room in the mixer truck to bring my bow.

Bummer. Well if a bow finds you, let me know.
I shot with Dave and had a great time. Shooting with other people sure beats shooting alone. We're going to the Lakeville shoot tomorrow.   :)

If you're thinking of going to see Jason, let me know as well, I'd like to meet the guy and have a look at his bows.

Going to try to make it to the Lakeville shoot in the AM tomorrow, denpending on how a sore ankle is holding up.
One think to keep an eye out for at the Lakeville Club is people hiding and moving targets, sometimes into un-safe shooting positions.
Unforunately the Archery club is on shared public property and some of the "hikers" feel the need to disrupt the targets. If they only knew the danger they were putting the next unsuspecing person to come down the trail in. Hopefully they will be monitoring this more closely this year. It was pretty bad last year, and I just stopped shooting as it was too frustrating.
Something to watch for though.
Look for the lefty shooting a Dwyer longbow, that will be me.
