Title: how to tune a TD recurve?
Post by: str8sh2ter on June 15, 2008, 11:53:00 AM
I've got a nice 45#TD..I'm working on tweeking the setup to get the best performance out of it.i've got 3 sets of arrows.50-55#,55-60#.And 65#-68#.[all are wood].i installed some wool string silencers. It came with the knock point installed.i knock under it.
Is brace height measured from string to back of riser, back of grip or top of arc on rest area?
I put an extra 10 twists in the string from when I got it and it quieted the bow alot. Now i measure 8 3/8" to back of riser, and about 9 to the back of the grip.Does this sound like too much or is it strickly an individual bow thing[use what works]The bow draws fine this way not stack or binding.
How heavy an arrow do you shoot out of a 45#r?
Give me some input or ideas if possible. Thanks in advace.

Brace height is measured from string to throat of grip.

If you are 9" to the back side of the riser you are probably very close to 7 1/4" to the deepest part of the grip, and that would be very typical for a recurve.

Like Outwest said, measure string to deepest part of the throat of the grip.

How's it shooting?

It's seems to shoot real good there and quiet.I guess i meant the nearest edge of the riser. That's not the back i guess.anyway it's the near edge .This would make my brace about 9".Seems alittle long but who knows?Maybe i'll antwist it a turn at atime and see when it gets noisier, then put a turn back in.
What #arrows do you guys use for a 45-47# bow?

I'd suggest a 1916 for an arrow.

If you are measuring from the near side of the riser to the string (called the belly side) and you are at 9" you are way too high IMO.

Measure from the deepest part of the grip to the string and start at 7" and tune from there would be my suggestion for a recurve.

i used 1915 arrows on a shelf cut past center with 145 gr heads cut to 29 inches with a 27 in draw length

Ok guys thanks.i shoot wood arrows.I've got 65#-68# w/140gr.field tips.I've got 50#-55# w/125gr.FT's,and 55#-60# w/125 FT's.
I losened the string 6 turns and still have 8.5" BH.Will see how it shoots at that spot.

i've got about 5/8'-3/4" difference in Tiller measurements from top limb to bottom limb.Is that close for a split finger shooter?

I believe that the difference in tiller measurement is usually 1/4" for split finger draw. So your is correct.

StickbowmanMi. You say 1/4" ,mine is closer to 3/4". yet it's OK?just trying to clarify.

Am i correct that the knock should be 1/4"-3/8" above square ,then knock arrow under the knock?

I tried to shorten the BH but anything shorter than 8.5" the string twang get's noticably louder.I'm going to go with it at 8.75" .I'vr got 1/2" difference in tiller measurements now.Knock point seems alittle high.Have to wait and check that tomorrow when i have a square. Thanks guys

I think your nocking point should be higher, and may be a contributor to noise for you. Try 5/8 and see how that goes. I am usually at 3/4. And I nock below. Also with the silencers, try them at 1/4's; that means with a 60" string silencers are 15 inches from the end of the string.

thanks for the insite.actually the knock is in the 3/4" area now.i was wondering if that was to much.i guess not.I'll mess with the silencers as you say. Thanks again
