I didn't realize that bocote was that oily. I let my new riser dry for 2 days and it was still tacky.
Best to spray with Deft first , or even cover with cyanoacrylate , then use the poly over that
Is that because it has oil in the wood....
It'll dry in few months :)
The superglue trick was a godsend for me. Just spread it over the bocota first. Let it dry and then poly will do fine.
Superglue on the bocote bow I made....
superglue works good for me.it seals the wood in about min.
Yeah, it will take months to dry without properly sealing first. Like others, I have had good luck with cyanoacrylate(superglue) then spar or poly over that. Good luck, Matt
I let a bacote bow sit for six months and it still was not dry. After I stripped it down then I just sealed it with super glue, same goes for cocobola and gaboon ebony.I just spread the super glue with my finger,I use a latex glove.
Superglue, superglue/acetone or shellac. It's gotta be sealed before the finish is applied.
Getting that sicky finish off to seal it is fun too. I just learned the hard way on my first bowbuild (Dryad bowblank). Superglue did the trick.
I used a scraper to remove the first gummy coat, then used the cyon.....(can't spell it)
A cotton buffing wheel takes it off pretty good. How much superglue does it take to seal a riser?
I had that problem once, bought some kind of "all natural" stripper from sherwin williams. It was in a white plastic container and the stripper was a greenish color. Wipe it on let it sit and it took the poly off. The stripper was almost a paste consistancy. It worked pretty well and wasnt that expensive. Maybe 10 or 12 dollars. Saved me a ton of scraping and then I sprayed a Sherwin williams 2 part conversion varnish on it. No problems since. With that SW 2 part I can spray any wood without sealing and it dries in 5 to 10 minutes. Steve
Shellac is what I would recommend. Much easier to deal with than superglue, but takes a little longer to dry.
It doesn't take too much super glue. Just spread it around evenly and don't miss any spots. Dries in no time.
Ric Anderson,
The shellac (Zinsser Bullseye aerosol)I have says not to use under polyurethane finishes. Have you had any problem with poly over shellac, or do you use a different top coat?
Thanks
Gotta spread it thin and fast I discovered or it will look like clear finger paint! UGH.
gaboon ebony is the same way, makes gluing iffy too if not prepared properly
Don't use spray on shellac use the paint on kind. Polyurethane should stick to it, I know it sticks to shellac you make yourself. I always use shellac as a sealer because all finishes will stick to it. It can even be used between lacquer and polyurethans.
