Title: Planning a Colorado Elk hunt
Post by: JDice on June 12, 2008, 08:20:00 AM
I want to go on a guided backcountry Colorado Elk hunt - probably in 2010. In all honesty, given the time/funds required I suspect this one trip will be the only one I ever take. Accordingly, I want the best experience possible. To that end, I am looking for first-hand information on 1) the GMU to hunt and 2) the outfitter/guide that will most likely result in a superior experience. In my mind, getting shot opportunities on legal bulls is a factor in the experience I am seeking - but - not the only one. The challenge of hunt, the beauty of the mountains, seclusion from crowds of other hunters, the experience and forthrightness(especially with traditional hunters) of the guides are also big factors.

I have whitetail and Eastern outdoor experience, but, no Western or Elk experience.  The info I have gathered so far, from books and the Internet, is a good start - but - I could use info from traditional archers who have first-hand, current Colorado Elk hunting experience.

Any info is appreciated. Thanks,

That far ahead maybe Fred Eichler (Full-Draw outfitters?) Rudy Steele "licensed guides & outfitters" owned by Tony Pressler (970-285-1070).  i think he has a 2 to 3 year waiting list.  i have deer hunted with him in Alabama but know some guys who have hunted Elk with him in Colorado with good success.  His prices are reasonable.

Mike Murphy with TBarM Outfitters in Durango, CO.  Traditional bowhunters themselves and they guide that way. I killed a 6X5 with them last year and going back this year.  Heard a lot a bugling night and day and saw a lot of elk.  Great experience.  Very little if any advertising due to so many repeat clients.  Mike's number is (970) 259-5469

Another vote for Murphy. I guided for him for years and still would, but feel I can no longer give full value to clients (old fart, in needs of lots of sleep, good booze and nocturnal cigars). dave
