I'm fairly new to trad forums and here and several others I have visited, I read threads and have no clue what the heck they're talking about.
I guess I been livin in the dark ages cuz I thought stick shooters shot sticks? Im curious how many shoot what? May be that I dont know everything after all!!!
I hope this is for real so here goes:
A stick bow is another name for a traditional bow (which may be pretty well any bow that doesn't have wheels).
I shoot a laminated longbow.
The number breakdown at the end will surprise you.

Mostly carbons, some alum's.Haven't made a wood arrow in years
That is all I shoot now -Woods- have fun making too. Want to learn how to Flint knap also.
Wood'n arrows for my Shrew 54" & for my self board bow.
I'd say mostly aluminum right now but I'm slowly making the switch over to carbons.
I shoot woods and carbons, 90% woods
I shoot carbons and have for the better part of the past 7 years. I've occasionally bought some wood arrows because of their beauty with a crown and cresting. But, I prefer carbons because they are tougher than wood.

Nothin but carbons. Shot the other junk but it just wasn't tough enough for me. I'm pretty hard on my arrows so I need them to be durable.
Every wood or aluminum arrow I've had has been donated to my buddies kids. They can have them all for all I'm concerned.
But, to each his own.
I've shot all 3 but the carbons were through compounds. I have been shooting aluminums through my traditional bows but that is going to change. I like wood but plan on trying some carbons through them as well to see how they shoot. The carbons I have shot do take alot of abuse. My main concern is getting the arrow weight up on them for traditional stuff but there are plenty of ways to get the weights I want. Personal thinking is nothing has the same feel as wood.
Curiosity may just get the best of me. I may try a half dozen carbons just to see whatthe fuss is about.
So, please tell me if I have this right. I like heavy... 600 minimum. I just checked out raptor and saw that they are 11 gr. per inch. I draw 28". I generally shoot about 10 lbs. over in spine weight. In order to meet my weight, I would have use a 125 gr. adaptor and a 175 gr. head. HOW MUCH heavier in spine would I need need to go to handle all that weight up front?
My next question is how long does it take to stop crying after you wreck one of these spendy buggers?

WOW!! Im already surprised. It's at 50%(74 votes) shooting carbons. Do they hold up as well as it sounds. I mean I am a dedicated stump shooter and I cannot see well enough to hit stumps with tears in my eyes. Geez... I even build my woodies ugly so I dont mind breakin or loosin 'em!! How ugly can I make 'em at $135 a doz?
I shoot all 3 but lately I been shooting carbons I to am surprised of the number shooting carbon. I have a shoot this weekend were most of the time a lot of the guys shoot wood I will look around and see......stabow
i shootin this order  carbons- woods -alum- river cane in fact any thing that will fly off my longbows
Stmp if your paying 135.00 a dozen my carbons are cheaper and that's after I use arrow wraps to make them look better......stabow

The only thing that surprises me is that more folks are shooting wood than aluminum.
Carbon rules!
stabow, Im not paying anything YET! I just had a look at a site thats selling them and that was the price. I do want to give them a try so if you have any suggestions on what to try Id appreciate it.
I've been shooting Aluminums for several years, but I've been slowly switching back to Wood. Nothing feels as good as Wood out of a Stick Bow.

What kind of bow you shooting and what's the draw weight......stabow
I like to shoot wood and carbon.
$135.00 for carbon :scared:
This is the best place I've found so far for carbon shafts. I've been shooting the Gold Tip Traditionals. (simulated wood)

I wait for the blemish sales from Sipsey River. I got 2 dozen GT Camo blems for just less than $135. Or maybe it was $135... Either way, that is two dozen fletched, cut, insert glued, and shipped arrows. That should last me at least 3 years, probably more.

The bow I want to try them with is a hybrid, semi-recurve. More of a longbow style limb r/d design.
Im shooting 62# at my 28" draw.
I like wood arrows, but pretty much shoot carbons for their durability. As far as price, I can usually find them for around $50/doz. for raw shafts. Add $12 for brass inserts and $20 for feathers and I end up with about $85/doz. for a tough 600 grain arrow. Mike
Stmp I would try CX 350 OR 250 I shoot the 90 out 45- 50 # bows......stabow
I love to shoot woodies when feeling romantic, but when I'm wanting to get my max hunting range I always take carbons. Nothing shoots as well, or penetrates as deep as my CE Heritage shafts. That's what works for me.
Gold Tip 35/55 Trads and Vapor Carbonwood 3000 now. I'm seriously looking into some Tapered Cedars or some Tapered Sitka Spruces though. I didn't think I would like them but they fly like the Dickens out of my Mohawk Longbow.
Thanks for the info everyone. Ill check it out.
I probably WOULD shoot wood BUT with all the different weight (spine) ranges The cost I think will go WAy beyond what Carbon gives you. Plus I dont want to worry about Straightening Anything Carbon is straight and it stays that way!!
Wood arrow shooter here, too, particularly ash. For years, I've have tons of XX75 autumn orange arrows and shafts that an old timer gave me stored in buckets, since I cringe at the thought of using aluminum. But with what seems like a disproportionate escalation in the price and tax on wooden shafts, I'm seriously considering using those aluminmums, purely for the sake of economy.
Gold Tip Traditional here....I love making wood ones but just dont have the patience to make them and break them so whne i get to be a better shot i might go back but these carbons are just to tough..
I shoot wood only.
