Title: Am I underspined?
Post by: Arwin on June 07, 2008, 10:41:00 AM
Before I fling a bizzillion arrows with my new limbs I wanted to ask. I'm using 62 inch Bob Lee Signature recurve limbs that are 56#@28. I pull to 27, brace height at 7 1/2. I currently have some 50/55 cedars, 28 inches BOP with 125 grain tips. Think they'll work ok? I have shot a few and they fly like darts right to the spot.
Only reason I'm asking is to make sure the arrows are forgiving enough on the limbs. Most charts point to me being ok, but I'm not sure since they are recurve limbs.

Sound weak to me, but shooting them tells you more.

They sound weak being your bow is a recurve with the riser cut past center.Usally recurves will require a slightly stiffer spine.Thats been my experience.

I would try 60-65# shafts....The ones you have are underspined

As a good rule of thumb when shooting POC Arrows you should go up in spine weight, in your case you would be better off with 55-60 # spine. JMO....ONE SHOT...  :)    :)    :)    :D    :D

I would say at 53# they have to be close.  55-60 would be OK also with the ability to add point weight.  Cut past center does not mean you need a stiffer arrow, only that you can shoot one.

Cool, thanks guys for the info. I'm going to switch back to the 46# longbow limbs and wait till I can buy some stiffer ones.

I shoot 60-65# Woodies from my 50# Treadway, and they fly like darts. I think your on the weak side.

It won't hurt your bow, just give slightly wobbly arrow flight and maybe hit a little right of where you point. The only thing that can damage bow limbs is if the total weight of the arrow is way too low. A normal cedar shaft will weigh about 350-375 grains and with feathers & nock (~20 grns) plus 125 pont you sould be 490-515 grains total weight. That would put you at about 9 grains per pound of draw weight - well within the safe limit for the limbs.

I would guess that you will get better flight from some 60-65 cedars or maybe even go up to 65-70 with a heavier point like 160. This will get you up in generally agreed hunting weight and should fly better for you.

Arwin add 10#s or so to spine due to a high performance bow and than add 5 more #s for every inch the arrow is cut over 28"s my guess is ya need 60-65# spine or a tad more like 65-60# spine, go to  www.Arrowsbykelly.com (http://www.arrowsbykelly.com)  and read his info, it will get ya balls on! Thanks I checked it out.  I gotta get some 60-65 shafts if I'm going to use a 160 grain head.   :D

Arwin:
Your minimum spine at 28"BOP should be 70/74#. Your Bob Lee is cut past center and needs at least +15#.
